Sort of the same here in the Baltimore metro area. Right now it's 61 and cloudy with a light wind. Schools & universities closed for tomorrow, transit is operating on an "hour-by-hour" basis, BG&E making robo-calls telling people to expect to be out of power for up to 7 days. (Unfortuantely that happens very regularly after standard summertime T-Storms) fist fights reported at Lowe's over generators and of course nothing left on the store shelves.

Sunday morning 9:30 am. Clinton CT Harbor area. High tide already having an impact.

Took a walk this afternoon and whole harbor area is buzzing. Town boat launch backed up 5 deep getting boats out; people hanging plywood over windows; everything that can move being stowed!

Barrier island and one low lying beach road under mandatory evacuation but I'm 1/4 mile up from water at 22ft above sea level so should be ok. Wind not supposed to be the issue, strom surge / high tide is.

We will be holding on for wet ride.

We're in suburban Philadelphia. All public transportantion will be shut down. All schools closed. Mandatory evacuations in designated areas. It's supposed to be a storm of monumental proportions around here...and to think I was worried about moving to "hurricane alley" ...in Florida.

water already at flood stage along the delaware [mercer cty area] and the back bay of cape may - and the storm won't be here until tomorrow! yikes!! state offices closed tomorrow, most schools closed for two days, transit system shutting down by 2am mon morning, local towns have crews out clearing streets of tree limbs/leaves, no bread/water in grocery stores, and looooong lines waiting at box stores and small suppliers for generators!

sorry i don't have a facebook page for new yawkers! ;) but i like the abc news storm coverage site Live Hurricane Sandy coverage from Eyewitness News New York on 7online (http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/livenow?id=8857235)

hoping me and all of your family and friends in the path up here stay safe!

Fire Island the barrier beach on Long Island is now evacuated.

My son has a home on the south shore, on the water, he's packing now, raising all valuables up high.

The bay is up about 3.5 feet now and it's not here yet, forecast can put his first floor under water.

Hello Baltimore Neighbor!
Hi back... But we're only a "temporary" neighbor..we make the move south come January. For several years we had homes in both PA & MD. Technically our "official-legal" address is still PA, so I guess you're our neighbor whereever we hang our hats!

Not to take this storm lightly but it is only a category 1 and it is (as of now) 500 miles from NYC and all the havoc its creating already.
I shutter to think what would happen had this been a stronger hurricane.

We were in CT for the storm last October. Lost several 100 year old maples on the driveway. The town was shut down for 9 days...no electricity. Took a couple weeks to get all the downed trees cleared. This storm is much worse. They are evacuating all of Fairfield County.
In Villanova PA, they are closing for Monday and Tuesday. Many kids have left campus. This is a monster. When you consider we had winds for 3 days, and it is nowhere near here, it isn't a surprise to think how bad it will be for those who actually in its path. I am really glad we are here.

My sister and her husband evacuated (they live in NJ) as they are right near a marina and their neighborhood is low lying.

Hopefully everyone will make it through the storm safely. Good luck to all who will be impacted.........

The problem here is not the catagory of the storm but the catagory of the flood potential.

The back end of the storm is pushing the sea water into Long Island Sound and once in it can't get out against the push of the storm. Add the fact that its a full moon high tide tomorrow night, the potential may be devestating.

Tides of 10-11 feet above normal here and nearly as high in NYC are more than problematic.

We are in Northern Va, right next to Dulles airport and 45 minutes outside of DC. No school for the next 2 days. No buses/metro/trains/flights for at least tomorrow. My mom was scheduled to come from NJ here on Tuesday and we were catching a plane to TV on Wed for some fun and R&R. Well, that is not happening. Maybe later in the week. Here the worry is power outages. Hoping for the best. Good luck to everyone.

anarick - if you are thinking of this event as just a cat 1 hurricane, i don't believe you really understand what is happening. one resource to understand is this website: 5 Reasons Sandy Will Be Epic - weather.com (http://www.weather.com/news/weather-hurricanes/hurricane-sandy-superstorm-20121027) glad you sorta understand that we are not taking this storm lightly in the least! weather people have said a stronger hurricane really would not make much of a difference - it's this storm's complications that are at the heart of the dilemma!

local weather folks have summed it to a short version: cat i hurricane meets strong nor'easter and both combine with awesome cold front - a triple header! not to mention the moon high tides! back bay waters will be meeting the ocean waters!

and this is not like a hurricane just sliding northward along side of a coastline - this storm is tracking north and then making a 90 degree left turn into the coastline and heading west and then north again inland only to exit off the coast of maine/canada!

while thousands have been evacuated from their homes, those of us who live in more inland areas are concerned for the loss of power which will prevent the operation of sump pumps, residential wells, water authorities going off-line, inability for personal medical equipment to operate for home dialysis, nebulizer treastments and the like and even a few 9-month pregnant women are concerned about a need to get to the hospital! coastal fire depts have been "issued" nat'l guard flatbed trucks so that they could mount at least one major pumper on same so that it will be able to navigate into flood waters and draft out of the waters in order to extinguish a fire.

those are not the normal, routine, run-of-the-mill precautions nj usually takes for a hurricane of any proportion or even the last 100 yr storm that went thru! home depots, lowes stores and hardware type stores in new england states [where this storm will head next] have been sold out of generators and have not been able to take delivery of any for the past week because of the deliveries that were directed to their nj stores! they are hoping to get some starting tomorrow!

so glad this will be over soon and so afraid of being out of power and water for the 7 - 14 days they predict is likely! ugh! but we're jersey folks and we will cope and rise above! ;)

Good luck njbchbum. I feel your pain. My neice and her family are in Manhattan's lower east side, one block from Zone A, hunkered down. I am so worried about her and her two adorable boys, ages six and nine. She said they have plenty of food and water, and they live on second floor, but still I worry. My sister is in central PA with a bulls-eye on her, also. Let's all pray that everyone is safe.

Stay high and stay dry!

Hello All, We wish all you folks in the MidAtlantic and New England safe passage through the storm. We have family and friends in NJ and VA and we are praying for their safety as well. Like other posters, I was hesitant to move from VA to FL because of the storms. Glad am here and not up north but our day will come here am sure. Just hope not too soon. Praying for you all! At this point ocean city has mandated evacuation for those in 17th street on down to the inlet for current flooding. Seems unreal as it has not been that bad so far but tomorrow morning will be bad as well as Tuesday, Here in Havre de grace the low lying areas are already evacuated and nobody is allowed near the water. Very weird storm as it really is a hurricane mixing with a big cold front just energizing both systems into one gigunda storm where even though it is over land it is still intensifying. We are already getting snow in the most western part of the state-really I am not kidding!! I have never seen anything like this. Looks like by tomorrow night the east coast from Washington DC up to NYC may be just plain dark!!!!

Steady 20-30 mph winds this morning driving the hard rain on already saturated land. At this point most people still have power but it won't be long before that starts to change. The one thing that we don't have to worry about are tornadoes. Maryland is not very big so it is amazing that we have a hurricane on the east side and a blizzard warning on the west side!!
No mass transit of any kind at least today and tomorrow-airports will close at 10am. Pictures of the ocean are unreal with waves from 10-18 ft high-looks fantastic but doing big damage to the beaches this morning-this will continue all day long as the storm is still hundreds of miles away. Lower New Jersey to NYC will see the worst of the storm.

JIM

that's me!!! smack dab in between both points!

but life is still good here this morning. state is pretty much flooded at the ocean front areas from the tip at cape may county all the way up thru ocean county. some monmouth county towns have minor flooding along their ocean avenues so far today [but high tide is passing] and the low lying areas along the back bays are somewhat flooded, too. that will all likely change tonite when the moon high tide rolls in! hopefully, all but the emergency responders who had to go to wrok today will be home by the time that happens!

ciao for now!

jimbo2012

Steady 30-40 gusts higher, 6,000 homes without power and it just started, tide is up to where Irene was already looks like flooding will be the real issue.

Some south shore streets R under water.

While our neighbors up north will be in our prayer these next couple of day, I hope all Villagers take a moment to thank God for this monster of a storm having not hit us. With it being 700+ miles wide, it certainly would have done tremendous damage to this entire state.
God Bless to all.

10-29-2012, 08:10 AM
What's different this time, and unique as far as hurricanes go is not it's strength, but the fact that Sandy is following the Gulf Stream north and then will take an almost hard left turn to the west, hitting the coast at a right angle. Something not seen before this far north. Why this is significant is that it will be pushing a record surge along with it, almost directly perpendicular to the shore. Then to make matters worse, it won't just blow through, but rather it will be held in place by a high pressure system off the coast blocking it's exit. It's already is expected to be the most severe storm to ever hit N.J.

Funny, here in NY we always thought of Florida bearing the brunt of these crazy storms. Last year at this time, we had a freak blizzard, this year, a "Frankenstorm", part hurricane, part nor'easter.
Ah, to be a FROG.....can't wait.

Our son is getting married Nov. 4 in Middletown, Connecticut. We were leaving yesterday and going to the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina where we used to live, see some friends and also see our cabins we built, then on to Connecticut. NC is expecting 11 inches of snow tonight so not going there. We are now leaving Wednesday or Thursday and going straight to Connecticut. oh! that sounds like a miscommunication! lol real good info is available here 511nj.org :: Home (http://www.511nj.org/) and here NJTA Mobile (http://www.state.nj.us/turnpike/m/mobile.html)

the gov's office screwed up on another announcement today! trying to correct same using lots of media outlets! "***GARDEN STATE PARKWAY: UPDATE*** A source at the New Jersey Turnpike Authority tells us: "We handle both the Turnpike and the Parkway. Please let people know that the Garden State Parkway is closed southbound ONLY at Exit 38. Northbound is open to traffic. For the time being anyway. The Governor's Office's tweet was WRONG and that issue is being addressed." lol

right now there is no state-wide travel ban - just some travel bans that have been implemented for local towns and counties. as i posted before, atlantic county is one that implemented a travel ban as of midnite last nite. maybe the gov will a change the situation in his noon press conference!

may we all fare well thru the duration!

The sea buoy's off long Island are reporting wave heights of 30-50 feet, those waves are going to hit the Fire Island barrier island, capable of breaching the island, they expect houses could wash away, may get a new inlet.

Wind now gusting into low 50's, they say it's really going to get interesting after 6PM.

The water at my sons bulkhead only has 30" to go until it washes over, they expect it to get 5-6 feet higher. Going to be close to his first floor level.

If it washes the bulk head out --- no insurance.

20,000 without power and it really hasn't started to get bad.

Wind has increased in the last few hours to 40+, almost no rain.

We have a biz located in Copiague next door to your son, also Selden and Carle Pl., all require electric we have big ass generators standing by.

Tonite is going to get much worse they say.

GOOD LUCK! Hope everything works out. And, of course, STAY SAFE!

The water at my sons bulkhead only has 30" to go until it washes over, they expect it to get 5-6 feet higher. Going to be close to his first floor level.

If it washes the bulk head out --- no insurance.

20,000 without power and it really hasn't started to get bad.

My bulkheading survived storms where the waves were crashing over it, throwing debris (picnic tables, bikes) onto it, and mine was old. It will probably be okay, this is what it was designed to do.

For anyone who doubts the impact of this storm... I live in the north suburbs of Chicago, along Lake Michigan. Tonight we are expecting winds of 50-60 mph, a direct result of Sandy. Navy Pier will be closed tomorrow, and all trails along the lakefront. There is a chance they will close Lake Shore Drive/Sheridan Road if the waves come over the breakwater and pound the pavement... I can only imagine with much trepidation what others are going through right now. Hope all are safe!

His floor is vibrating with the wave action, it's too late for him and his kids to leave, but the wind is abating, and the tide should go down, he has a geny going.
Also can if really needed go to his neighbor, but walking in the dark with power lines down is more risk than sitting tight. He refused to leave when he should have :cus:

My other two sons one lost power the other has power.

The biz are running on geny's all ok there.

Made it through the storm, but more winds and rain are predicted for the next 24 hours. Walking through our neighborhood this morning, some trees are down but actually not as much damage as the storms this past July. Not as much rain inland (Freehold). Power has been out since 8pm last night, but most people learned from the past and have generators. Quite a few shore towns were evacuated and they had massive flooding all along the coast. Seems like the winds caused every leaf from every tree to fall and all in our front yard. But that is nothing compared to what happened to many people.
Counting our blessings and counting the days until we can be in TV for good!

In the general terms it would be safe to say that somehow the storm missed us. How we're not sure. Other than dealing with a generally crummy day yesterday, our power & cable stayed on, and we had no ill effects. However many around us in Baltimore county have no power..Last update was about 47,000 customers out. Of course down on the Eastern Shore they got badly kicked in the teeth, and many spots heading up the bay had serious troubles. Not quite sure what spared us, but we are certainly thankful for it.

All of the various schools, government offices, and many businesses are closed today. Most Baltimore hospitals dropped their "alert" status at 8am this morning and miracle of miracles our mailman showed up at his usual time, even though it was reported yesterday that there would be no mail service until at least Wednesday.

Unfortunately so many, many people in NJ & NY are in dire straits. My brother lives in Boston, and they were having a much tougher go than we were.

What a day, been on the go since early this morning, just got home, totally burnt out!!!

Getting two buildings powered up with generators and hunting Diesel for one and gas for the other. We have perishable stuff that needs elec.

My house is ok except no power along with 85% of Long Island in the dark for 7-10 plus days.

Two of my other sons homes are ok, one has power.

Can't say the same for my other sons home on the bay, his bulkhead washed out behind he lost truck loads of sand, he had a pool in the backyard, gone washed away.

He sent us cell movies, it is unbelievable, they had a terrible night for them each wave vibrated the house so much they felt severe vibrations under their feet, the waves were washing across his lawn.

A lot of the damage is un-insurable, his foundation may be compromised from water. He was so burned out when the bridges opened up off LI he went to Foxwoods casino to unwind and sleep in a dry bed. Only to get a flat on the way there.

I'm going to sleep a bit and get back early in the morning.

The rest of LI is like a war zone as is NJ.

There's no way they could stay in their co-op with two boys, ages six and nine, and no power or heat for a week or more.

She said the power went off about 9:00pm last night, but it really didn't get that cold with no heat. Also, their car was fine. However the spot they usually park in had a big tree on it. She said they saw lots of damage driving up town.

yesterday was a good day, we had our home power back on yesterday at 3PM, moved out of our RV back into the house. (it was cold last night so it was nice to get back inside)

What you folks don't see is our local TV news station, there R areas on Long Island that are really bad,
our family real was lucky, my son on his bayfront home took a really costly uninsured hit, but he lined up trucks to backfill his washed out bulkhead starting today, lined up a bulkhead repair company to start in few days.

Two of my sons homes are running on generators so they will be fine.

Two of our three business are back up and running on the main grid last nite, we are so surprised the power was flipped on in those locations.
Last nite we shifted the big generator to the third business and now is off the little generators now on a big generator, big enough to run a whole village, maybe it can run Brownwood.

http://www.northerntool.com/images/product/images/25643_lg.jpg

It holds 80 gallons of fuel, enough for two days.
Our perishable inventory was all saved.

Cell phones are still spotty, AT&T in bad shape Verizon much better, towers may be down.

All the restaurants are backed up with long lines, many can't cook at home.
Gas stations are open, some have long lines others do not, strange.

Again thanks for your prayers and well wishes.

We can now start to think again about our new home and friends at TV.

Hubby made it to our house yesterday. Entire first floor was destroyed by storm surge in addition to garage. Power is still out and cell signal is still spotty. As Jimbo mentioned Verizon seems to be better than AT&T. Many areas around us are decimated. There are a couple of new inlets where the ocean now meets the bay where the water broke thru the barrier island. It is heartbreaking. We have suffered a great loss, but others have suffered so much more that it is incomprehensible to me. We are thankful to be safe and for all our other blessings.

At this point, we are still planning to fly down to TV on 11/15 for our design appt. At least we have something to look forward to.

I was in touch with njbeachbum right before the storm. She was located north of me and about a mile inland. Power outages, cable outages, etc. are more than likely the reason for her absence from ToTV.

We're in suburban Philadelphia. All public transportantion will be shut down. All schools closed. Mandatory evacuations in designated areas. It's supposed to be a storm of monumental proportions around here...and to think I was worried about moving to "hurricane alley" ...in Florida.

We're also from PA; we just got our power restored after four days. I'm grateful cause we were the lucky ones. We found a place for our food and didn't have to discard much. It was cold in our house, but we managed with lots of blankets. What I missed the most was my connection to TV, this bulletin board. Glad to be back.

That's horrible. One of the many downfalls of being without power is not being tuned in to how the rest of the world is faring. Prior to losing power, I heard that NY was going to bear the brunt. So sad!

We're live in Bucks County and plan to make our second trip to TV in December. We're trying to decide on a model to build, although we won't be able to move for another year and a half. I wish it was now!!!

We live in Montco and we plan to relocate to TV in the summer of 2013. I can relate to the agony of waiting for the move. We love talking about TV. In fact, we are meeting another couple for dinner tonight who we met on this BB. Our friends and family must be sick of hearing us talk about TV, but future Villagers can never tire of discussing it.

Just read on twitter that power is back on in parts of lower Manhattan, specifically lower east side, east village and soho. I hope this is true so all those poor people will have heat and water and electricity.

Glad you guys are ok. I was heartbroken to see pictures of the damage. Its been a few years since I've been back to visit my neighborhood in Toms River and Seaside but some of my friends are still there and have suffered great loses. Sending hugs and prayers to everyone out there.

Glad that everyone who recently posted is ALIVE and SAFE.
However, so much devastation and home damage occurred.
This is a general "glad you are o.k." to all of them........

The New Jersey shore was the place to go when we were teenagers.
To see everthing wiped out is so very sad. Destruction is mind boggling.

They were not kidding when they said that the full moon would cause high tides and that everyone should evacuate. My heart goes out to that poor mom on Staten Island who lost her two year old and four year old son after her S.U.V. got stuck in some water..............she apparently hung on to a tree.......then made it up to a man's home , which looked quite substantial and none the worse for wear.........he wouldn't answer her knocks on the door; she eventually threw a flower pot through his back glass door or window.............he still wouldn't let her in. Probably thought she was a looter...........JUST A NIGHTMARE STORY. Those poor toddlers. Their bodies were found in a marsh......several feet from each other. He actually cursed at the reporter and photog who was trying to find out the gist of the story. He said "she" was a "man" and that he never heard the knocks.

My elderly cousin lives on Staten Island with her daughter, son in law and three grandchildren..........plus her son and his kids, also reside on Staten Island etc. He's a retired New York City policeman with a long owned vacation home in Point Pleasant N.J. I wonder how that ended up?

Staten Islanders DESERVE to be furious.......where was the help???? Slow to arrive, that's for sure.

We have cousins in Bergen County New Jersey.....half of their town is o.k., the other half not so good..........they still have power but no cell phone or telephone........they are not on a river or near the ocean.

Other towns with relatives are "inland" and they will not have power for over a week.

People we know who have to go to business in New York City were told NOT TO COME IN as everything is still surrounded by water in the low lying areas.........our cousin's son's girlfriend lives in Hoboken and she was o.k. on the 6th floor but it's flooded at ground level.........so she came to be with her parents in Bergen Co. who just got their power back on......and so she could take a shower.

Stories all over New York and New Jersey coming in from relatives.

My half brother lives near Point Pleasant with his two autistic daughters.

My husband's cousins (elderly) live in Toms River, N.J.....also was surprised to see damage there.

WE have family in Absecon, Little Egg Harbor, and up and down the Jersey shore........no power, no phones.

We thought IRENE was bad in Vermont last August of 2011 but that basically destroyed our ROADS and BRIDGES up the center of the Green Mountains..........so small towns were isolated and couldn't go east and couldn't go west; and sometimes even north was blocked...........some barns and animals and homes floated down rivers...........BUT NOTHING LIKE THE DISASTER IN NEW JERSEY AND NEW YORK and other coastal states............

Last year during Irene, a neighbor of our nephew in New Jersey got sucked into a storm drainage pipe when he was trying to relieve the water pressure on his suburban street......for the neighbors. Didn't realize the power of the water..........WATER IS POWERFUL AND DAMAGING.
Unfortunately, his was not a happy ending, although they searched for him all night long........hoping he'd found some type of air pocket.
Gruesome thought. He was a landscaper by trade and just felt that he might help to prevent further flooding in his neighborhood by opening the storm drain cover...................

My thoughts and prayers have gone out to all living in Hurricane Sandy's path................even though I can't answer each one. A nightmare for sure.

Power back on at 4:15 AM (Sat. 11/3)...yeah!!!

Nice to be warm again on these cool nights.

Thank goodness. What has the temperature been during the day and also during the night time????

On CNN it appears anyone outdoors is dressed in parkas or layered with hoodies, etc........it does look damp and chilly.

In Vermont, we finally got down to 40 something in the daytime.....but to my husband that is WARM. He is still going out in his shirt sleeves.....hardy soul.

I hope and pray that none of you do get that northeastern storm due for mid week up here........supposedly rain or snow. You don't need more bad weather on top of what already you are dealing with.

Does anyone know how the Lakoma Avenue part of Staten Island is doing?

Yes we're going to get slammed Wed/Thur.

On LI they think 90% will be powered on by Wed, but those that are not and have generators are waiting 3-4 hours on gas lines.

It is getting into the 30's now and thru the week.

Without power it is too cold to stay.

Homes on the water are being inspected door to door getting green sticker if considered habitable from the looks of the exterior, or red is deemed uninhabitable.

My son got green sticker and power yesterday, driving down his street yesterday there are wires hanging down low across many streets, cars are driving below them?????????????

I think we have several days yet to return some level of normalcy.

Still lucky, there are several hundred homeless, any home that was for rent is now rented I believe. FEMA is giving $31,500 to homeowners, over 75,000 applied.

Up to $2 Million for any biz from FEMA.

the saga continues........

Gas issues are not truly being reported, there are now gas stations in bad neighborhoods manned by police and military with M-16's

Oh forgot this one, my grandson waited online yesterday for 2 1/2 hours, got to pumps and guess what his credit card would not be accepted, CASH only.

He didn't have any cash, because he's young he didn't know how to handle the situation, and left.
My son went back with him and explained what happened and they let him in to pump.

CASH ONLY seems to be the only thing that works. A friend had her roof fixed Wednesday CASH ONLY. The insurance company approved her claim on Facebook without even coming out.

I heard the North Shore is a total mess.

Still almost 500,000 without power. The latest from LIPA is they expect most up next weekend and remote areas longer.
