Went to the show last night at Savannah Center, there was also an alzheimers group meeting there. Parking was limited and it was raining very hard. I passed (in my golf cart) three different spaces where someone parked their cart in the middle of the spot instead of leaving room for another cart. These were not specialty carts (i.e. street rods) just regular carts like mine. Please leave room for another cart in a parking space when you park your cart, just as a common courtesy in a golf cart community.

I have to 2nd your request. I've seen this quite a lot in other parking lots as well....even seeing "some" park in the parallel spots just like a car! Think that if folks are new they could figure it out just by observing others.

My 2 cents worth. When I first visited TV I didn't know one could park 2 to a space. My sister told me different. Maybe a note to that person would help them out.

Ignorance may be part of the problem but it seem a long stretch that all of these golf cart drivers haven't noticed that most people double up in a parking spot. So we are left with I forgot and took the whole space or I don't care and want the whole spac to myself first come first serve find your own

That seems like what they do. Or they park just far enough to the right of where they get out and don't leave enough space for the second cart. One day I managed to "squeeze" next to one of these at the mail stop and they complained that the could not get out because I was so close. I said that they should just back straight out and there would be no problem. But since then I leave about 6-8 inches. BTW: She could have backed out easily. I did so she could get out.

:cus: Yep, even in TV you find a few rude and selfish people. Some carts that are lengthy because of golf club attachment or customized and are "way out" in the street around Sumter Landing and you have to be very alert when driving your car to the square. It appears to be an accident waiting to happen.

'Courtesy' is the operative word here. One with which MANY people in TV are not familiar.

I realize that its likely a unwritten law in TV to double up on parking, But if someone chooses not to allow for 2 carts in 1 space is it a hang-able offense?:jester:
Why not petition the powers to be to have a portion of the parking spaces re- painted to GC dimensions. That way everyone can have their own space.

maybe because this is something that is not really broken so it really does not need to be fixed? and since the streets are public roads, striping for golf carts is probably not in any traffic ordinance.
the 'problem' is a rare one. newbies will catch on quickly. outsiders could be more likely not to care since they don't live here and they might never change.

rather a broad brush, eh? based on my experience, i find that most everyone has been courteous to me. but then, i don't always know who is a resident and who is not when we are all in the villages together.

My husband and I went through the Savannah Center last night and noticed how packed the parking lot was and we saw 3 golf cars parked in single spaces and said the same thing. It is one of the many great things abour the carts is they can double the capacity of a space if people just think about it. BTW what was going on there last night, I tried to find out but didn't have any luck. Thanks

a] i believe that was posted by notgolfer rather than harry gilbert
b] maybe they were outsiders - some care and some don't?
c] agree that new folks will figure it out sooner or later - but they will hafta care, too.
d] and just maybe the folks at the savannah center were renters who were afraid to get the cart scratched
e] or maybe the carts belonged to someone in the alzheimer's mtg and they forgot?
whatever - it was nice of you to say please.

Actually, we have a lot of family and friends who like to come up for the weekend so we bought two carts. I always explain to them to park on one side of the parking spot to save room for another cart. I also tell them when they are going the same place as me to park behind me so someone else can park next to us.

I have always understood that when parking a golf cart you staggered your carts so 2 carts could fit into one space....you never park them next to each other. I was shopping at WalMart today and I was the only cart in the parking space....I pulled all the way up and I assumed that if some one else wanted to park they would have parked their cart back...not the case...I had to crawl over my soda and water to get in my cart...just use common sense....

One other thing I do parking my cart in a space is to park near the back of the space so people looking for a space can see my cart. If they are in a cart, they can see if there is room for them. If they are in a car, they can see the space is occupied. When I'm in a car it can get frustrating thinking a space is available only to find a cart parked well into the space.

kind of like when a car takes two spots:doh:
OMG I might have been one of them people that hogs the space. I've visited TV several times but NEVER knew this rule. Sorry everyone. When I return in 2 weeks to our new home....its another rule I'll add to my growing list. It makes perfect sense, but it really never occured to me. I guess I have been preoccupied with being a good and respectful golf cart driver that I didn't notice it was a rule. I have to admit I had seen it done many times, especially at Sumter Landing, but I thought it was just friends out together for the evening. Now I know, Thanks !

Thank you for your explanation, Suzi. So many times people jump to conclusions that others are being arrogant, when there's frequently a good reason for their actions--even if it's just a lack of situational awareness for what's the norm in an area.

Great idea. I wondered if there was any protocol when you are the first cart occupying a space.
Our friends informed us how to park when we first visited otherwise we too may have parked wrong.

Since I do not own a GC and planning in the near future renting a place for a month to pick out our new home can you explain the different striping for cars vs GC. Is there a website I can look at that will explain this? I do not want to cause any problems during my visit.

gpirate, there isn't any different striping. 2 carts or 1 car to a diagonal parking space. For parallel parking, carts are parked front first towards the curb; I believe a space holds 4 carts. Carts & cars can't share a parallel space (if a car has space in front or in back of it, a cart can't park there.)

And this is why a lot of people find it nothing but a problem to try an allow for a second cart in one spot even though it sounds so simple. A lot of cart drivers have no idea how to do it properly. Plus the carts are usually too close to the cars on each side which is another problem and then the car owners want to complain. Until there is a law that says different or the spots are striped for carts it appears this is still a choice we can all make for ourselves for our own reasons without having to answer to anyone else about it.

I see "what the" situations every day here. We have vacationers, old folks, and some just simply unaware of their surroundings. I reject the idea that they do the things they do just to make someone else mad. It is more likely that some of us just look for things to complain about. Why don't someone with the know how put together a friendly things todo list for the offenders.

I'm in a club car with doors. the doors swing outward about a foot to open. Just as in a car you need enough space to open the door to get in, so do we who have doors on the cart. I won't be parking double as there is often not room left by other cart parkers to open my doors. Don't scowl at me please.

As long as I am ambulatory, I will park my car at the far end of the parking lot. You all can have more room to park your carts. I won't encroach on your space nor you on mine. Quicker to exit, also.
Some parking lots have designated cart parking areas, or so I'm told. that might make it easier for all.

I have another view on this golf cart parking. I travel throughout the villages as a driver for my elderly parents who also live here. On numerous occasions, we park their Buick Lacrosse, get out ok, but on return to the car, find that two carts have parked next to us staggered and having parked in such a way that we can barely get into the car cause the cart wheels are right on the white line. My parents on up in years, using canes for balance and one can hardly open the door fully when the cart infringes on the space between us. Many times this has happened and we do use the handicap spots where no problem exists, except many times there're all full. So, since we are to treat our carts like cars when traveling about, why must those that use only one spot to park in that its somehow a violation of friendly cart rules? is it so wrong? Only one car per parking spot, then one cart is friendly to myself and parents when parking about the villages.

At the very least you could easily be charged with attempting to steal the cart...best to keep all hands off another person's property for many reasons.

I think some signs for the parking lots
around the Squares would help educate us all on what the custom is.
A picture of two carts in a space would also help.

I understand what you are saying, but keep in mind that without double golf cart parking you would have a more difficult time finding a parking spot close by and your parents would have to walk twice as far. Perhaps when there are no handicap spaces available you could drop off/pick up your parents at the door. That's what I do when I'm driving folks who are mobility impaired. I think the occasional, random problems encountered due to double parking of golf carts are far outweighed by the benefits of double golf cart parking.

Surely you jest!! Signs have not helped people learn how to navigate the traffic circles. What makes you think they would help people with learning how to park?
