You can pick up a Sunpass at Walgreens.

According to Florida's Turnpike - The Less Stressway™ | Traveler Information | Paying Tolls (http://www.floridasturnpike.com/tools_paytoll.cfm) the only place where you need Sunpass and are unable to use cash is in the Miami/Dade area which is south of Disney. You will still be able to pay cash along the way to Disney. I went to the airport in Orlando recently and there were toll booths to pay cash. If you need to go to Miami/Dade area via the turnpike you would need the Sunpass.

We utilize the little sticker sunpass thingy mainly for our trips to the airport and other destinations. To me they are well worth the money. I don't like to have to stop and dole our cash and then start out again. To me it's a big inconvienance not to use sunpass. It's one less distraction to buzz down the interstate as they were designed.

The convenience of having a sun pass far, far outweighs the $25 fee to buy one.
The time saved alone is worth the price.
And if you only use it occasionally it does not cost anything to use it just once in a while.

It is a no decision decision to me. We bought one that has suction cups and can be moved from one vehicle to another.

The decal type of Sunpass cost $4.99 and has $5 of tolls built into it. If you have one car, this is the best. Keep money on it automatically by linking it to a bank account. When you get rid of the car, scrape it off the window and it becomes void. You are mailed the amount left on the pass.

Portable transponder is perfect when you have more than one car.

We also still have our removable transponders for Easy Pass for travel up north and and other places. Leave it in the house or in the foil bag.

Great,,, the more of you who buy the Sunpass, the fewer I have in the Cash only line... I haven't experienced any toll booths that had Sunpass only.. there may be some, but I go to Orlando regularly and have been to Miami and didn't need one there either.

Kathie: My thoughts were similar until I had to pickup my Son during the Holidays at OIA. That trip six years ago took hours! We have a Sunpass. In addition, you get a discount with the Sunpass and avoid lots and lots of traffic at the toll booths. :ho:

There's another benefit to the Sunpass and having the credit card automatically feeding it prepaid amounts thru the website. I once used a new car to go to the airport and forgot I didn't have Sunpass in it yet. I drove thru the first two sunpass lane toll booths without paying. As always, the system photographs the license plate and mails the car owner a bill for the toll with the fine later.

Well, later on when I went onto the website to update the info on the car and license plate, I saw that I could pay the skipped tolls with fines there, using the credit card we keep on file to feed the prepaid amounts to the Sunpass.

Better yet, using the credit card on file meant that the two tolls due with fines were only $0.77 each, instead of the $7+ with fine on each that came in the mail. So the fine was waived by paying it that way instead of mailing them a check.

Nice!

There are some exit in Orlando that are Sunpass only... If I'm not mistaken, Consulate Drive is one of them.

There is really no economic reason to not have a Sunpass...

There is at least one exit near Disney from the Turnpike that is Sunpass only, Consulate Drive southbound only at mile 255. Don't think you would typically use this for Disney. Other Sunpass only exits are 240, 138, 107, and 98

You can always go on 27 then 192 to Disney, no tolls and about 15-20 minutes longer.

I am coming to TV for only a week in December and will be renting a car, I will travel from the airport to TV, then to Disney World and also to Merritt Island to visit my brother. I do not own my own car right now, however the rental company charges $8 a day for the transponder, which I hate to pay for. Do you all think I can get away without it for that week?

I just avoid toll roads. It adds a bit to the trip, not too much of an inconvenience for us.

As I mentioned in my previous post, it will about 15-20 minutes extra to get to Disney from TV on 27 then 192

If you have GPS, just program to avoid tolls.

We don't have a Sunpass and had zero issues when going to Disney.

I bought the 4.99 in publix . It's very small and you don't even notice it. I called them on the phone and it took a couple of minutes to set it up.

What some of the rental cars have done recently is to charge the daily rate for the transponder only on the days that you use it. Even with the transponder in place, you always have the option to just pay at each booth.

I would just buy the $5 transponder for myself and put it on credit card feed on the website (feeds increments of money you indicate.....I have mine feed $25 when needed).

The tolls are reduced price by using the transponder (your own, not rental car company's).

It all can be done here: https://www.sunpass.com

If I was you I would take the Sunpass---it will make life easier for you that week.

We went to Disney this week got a couple days. Turnpike to Exit 267 (rte 429s) takes you into back of Disney. No traffic. You don't have to have Sunpass.

Can I buy just the $5.00 sticker and not the $40 transponder? Will that suffice? I can't order online because they ask for your license plate number and I don't have one. I may just have to pay the rental company, but it just kills me to pay $8 a day plus the tolls. Can anyone confirm or know how I could find out if they still have cash lines?

We have the $5.00 stick on type. Recently we had the windows tinted and I forgot about the transponder. When we picked our car up, we found out that they had scraped the transponder off and attached it to the back of the mirror. I asked if it would still work and was told that it would. We've been to Orlando and WDW several times and so far so good.

You do not need a Florida license to register the transponder. If you own a car anywhere, you can use that tag number. We had a transponder when we had a VA license plate on the previous car we had. You can use your home state tag number and then use the transponder in the rental car. Just make sure you don't permanently attach it to the rental.

Is the 4.99 one you buy at Publix enough to cover the tolls from The Villages to Disneyworld? What if you run out of money on it and don't know it and go through the Sun Pass booth?

With all the world wide visitors who go to Disney, I find it hard to believe that everyone has a Sunpass. I am sure that you can get to Disney w/o one. I went to Disney from TV last year w/o one.

Disney is the expense to be concerned about.

You link the Sunpass to a credit card. If you run out of money there, the Sunpass is the least of your worries.

Exactly. And it's not the expense of the Sunpass. That's minor. The main reason to have the Sunpass is the convenience. You can certainly get to WDW without going down the Turnpike, but it'll take you about twice as long.

There are unmanned toll booths on the way to Disney. You take the Turnpike South and go to Exit 267A to route 429-south. Exit 8 puts you on Disney property -- right near the Coronado Springs resort (Western Way). There will be an unmanned toll booth at Exit 8 and I believe one on RT-429 right after the Turnpike.
This toll road was created with Disney's financial help -- it puts people right on the property (thru the west end), and you don't have to deal with I-4 and the Orlando congestion.
