View Full Version : China lands on the moon!!!!!

A significant feat in and of itself. In addition to the soft landing it also deployed a land rover that will travel the moon for 3 months. Another significant feat all by itself.

The accomplishments further underline China's commitment to advancing technology.

As we can all REMEMBER there was very much technology transfered from the conquests in space to industry and we the people.

The rest of the world will have recieved China's message on capability in space.
This accomplishment should/could be looked at as another form of the Sputnik accomplishment of the past.

The USA could once again wind up or already is behind.

We the people need to encourage our representatives to have another JFK moment to lay out the future of our space program, for our future generations. The return on investment is substantial for private, corporate and essential for military capability.

Nothing political intended. The above is offered in the same spirit as discussing whether golf cart a bridge should be put over a highway.
Nothing more.

The question is WHO will lead his space program ?

The newest studies show that the USA has dropped to 24th in science...31st in math....and 21st in reading. This is based on the Program of International Study
Assessment which tests 15 year old every three years. China is one of the leaders.

They determined our young folks have not gotten worse, but others have surged ahead.

This country sort of has messed up priorities, and seem to be blind to our regression.

Valid points BTK, but we need to understand reality.

 I agree----we are falling behind in technology and space because we refuse to fund our space program. Thousands of space engineers have been layed off and NASA is just a "shell" of itself.

The one really good program where there was leading edge technology----we don't properly fund. I'm not blaming anyone person or any one political party. Perhaps China's achievements will be a wake up call.

So...if I do something 45 years after someone else...I'm nipping at their heels? Do something NEW if you want to impress me.

Are you suggesting another costly endeavor by our country? We're already going over a trillion in the hole every year. Where is the money to come from? There are so many great ideas...that unfortunately...cost money.

Take the minorities out of the statistics and we're still at/near the top. Run your numbers with white middle class and above...and the numbers are strikingly different. I hate to always have to come back to racial differences...but they are there and they do have an effect. Our rankings go down as the percent of minorities goes up. It's a fact. Delete this if you must, but it doesn't change the facts. Ignoring a problem does not make it go away. Instead of "no child left behind" that lowered standards so pretty much anyone can get a HS diploma, making them worthless...the new motto should be "study like an Asian!" to get everyone to strive to do their best. Kids will and SHOULD fail to get a HS diploma unless they can show proficiency. "Try harder and maybe you'll make it" should be our other motto.

One has to wonder how intellectual and bright the Chinese people truly are since China has stolen so much in technology and brilliant, innovative ideas from the United States of America. They are constantly trying to suck off anything they can from this country. I wonder how they ever thought of developing a rover to study this surface?

I also agree our country needs to shut off the video games and TV's and inspire the latest generations to educate themselves and develop ambition.
We're really getting closer to the idiom of "Nero fiddled while Rome burned".

Do not fear. They have not yet accomplished what we did 49 years ago. There is no doubt that this is a remarkable success for China and that they have come a very long way in the last 25 years, but remember they had the benefit of not having to invent new technology to do this. But good old American know how got it done with 1960's technology.

money for space research/endeavors/technology developement/etc is not an issue.

If the priority was established there is no shortage of funds in the existing spending spree.

Including new employment and an incentive for future generations careers the dividends/benefits of space investment are incalculable.

Just look at the statistics in Buccos posted link......we have fallen behind the rest of the world and there is nothing to suggest anything other than staying there or worse on the horizon.

Once a country loses it's manufacturing and technology base it soon falls from leading to following to getting out of the way.......with some 3rd world countries showing a better standing than ours we have obviously taken to getting out of the way.

Nothing will change without prority and leadership......NOTHING.....just following or standing aside. Very sad testimonyto a nation's heritage.

First of all, China is now only one of three who have landed on the moon softly, and the first to do so in THIRTY YEARS. I find it VERY significant.....first in orbit just 10 years ago, AND concern has been expressed as to how the Chinese examination will interfere with our own ongoing investigation on the surface.

I do, however, agree that this country who cannot afford what we are up to now, are going to have to sit by......we have channeled our money to other things we feel are important.

On your education remarks, there is a lot of truth in what you say....to validate some of it, I offer an article from the LA Times that says pretty much what you did...

"If there is a lesson to be gleaned from PISA, it's that moving toward a more educated nation will require helping families give their children the resources and background they need to do better in school, as well as continuing reform efforts to improve instruction and curriculum. It requires committed action over time, not warring and self-serving pronouncements.

My opinion, and it is shared by many in the profession is our tolerance level is so much higher than others....we live in a "you get a trophy if you show up" society.....we do not INSIST on family involvement, and the rewards for hard work in school are not recognized.

LEST YOU THINK it is reserved for children....I ask you to consider this from the NY Times...

"A particularly alarming report on working-age adults was published earlier this month by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a coalition of mainly developed nations. Unfortunately, this is yet more evidence of China's rising ascendancy contrasted to American decline ... most of the latter self-imposed by a rotting pop culture and feckless leadership. Sad actually.

Obviously, I agree.

What, to me anyway, is as serious, is the noticeable lack of acceptance of this fact, and the acceptance of what is happening.

We seem to endorse and accept the breakdowns within our society, and in many cases defend it.

Chanting USA and bravado language is not sufficient to save my country.

...not ON the Moon.....BUT..

Yes....partly with the $100 Million Dollars PER DAY in Interest our government has to pay to the Chinese....
..............for the $ Trillion Plus we have borrowed from the Chinese.

10 % of ALL homes Sold in California in 2011 were sold to Chinese Citizens.

FIFTY Square Miles of land South of Boise, Idaho , "quietly" snapped up.
( think about that....access to the Snake River Plain Aquafier.)

They have plans for at least 12 more similar sites throughout the USA for
planned multi-use Communities...homes...factories...etc to be located here.

MUCH land near and at The Port of Toledo Ohio...and other lands along The
Maumee River.....(easy to move our grain out from there)

200 acres near Milan, Michigan for housing Chinese Execs and families....
...hmmm....wonder why.....

The Chinese have purchased ....33% of the OIL Rights in the Southwest and MidWest of the USA ...from SEVERAL small to medium size Oil Companies....
....ON MORE THAN 3 MILLION ACRES....and that is only the beginning of their quest to acquire oil rights here.

How about the WORLDS LARGEST Hog and Pork Provider...
...the Smithfield Foods USA Inc. was purchased by the Chinese in Sept. 2013........for 4.7 BILLION in Cash.

China Ocean Shipping... has purchased lots of land at and near SEVERAL
PORTS on our East Coast and Gulf Coast.

HUGE tracts of land at BOTH ends of The Panama Canal.

AND JUST THIS PAST WEEK.....Chinese Businessman Wang Jing has acquired
the exclusive rights to build A NEW INTER-OCEAN Canal through...
Nicaragua...This should take about HALF of all shipping away from the Panama Canal.

Snapping up land at and surronding and near our MAJOR Int' Airports.

The above does not worry me...
...what scares the heck out of me......is that China has acquired
the rights to 95% of the Rare Earth Elements WORLDWIDE.
The production AND refining is controlled by them

...how will we do any high-tech, guided missiles, laser, communications, or moon landings), I-phones, smart TVs,
touch screens.....etc.etc.etc. without BUYING Rare Earth Elements ( minerals.).. FROM the Chinese.

Improvements in anything thru science is a good thing. It is time for wealthy nations like China to step up and invest in the future of the earth. Some day with research and working for the same goals it will no longer be them and us. I hope for that no matter what language it comes in.

This from my earlier post in this thread...

China is taking us over and quickly. We borrow money from them in order to pay them for manufacturing good for us. We now root for them to take away any tech advantage we ever had by scrapping NASA and just not caring anymore. We continue to go even deeper in debt and seem to have completely lost sight of the big picture. I keep referring to our society as one that feels it should "get a trophy for just showing up"....unrealistic for sure. We argue over things and forget not only are our children falling behind but as the above report shows, the adults are doing the same and meanwhile we entertain ourselves with such trite "problems".

Some day with research and working for the same goals it will no longer be them and us. China has continually demonstrated the preference for them and us throughout history and that is not likely to change.

Really doesn't matter because China is on its way to owning the USA

Take a look around, things have changed...it's the "Federal Reserve" that is on it's way to "owning the USA". Using "credit" made up on a computer...they now "own" 2X what China does. The bankers of the Federal Reserve are "buying" (again all credit), about $90 BILLION of treasury bonds and mortgages from the other banks EVERY month. China doesn't buy as much or hold as much as they used to. Nobody is buying our debt like they used to. The Fed has become the main buyer...using CREDIT.

Now there's talk of the Fed canceling the debt...after they made over $100 billion in interest on "money" they created as credit on a computer. Ah, banking...quite the racket! Make up "money" as credit, and have people pay you in REAL money the interest they "owe" you...
