Well, The Daily Sun had an article regarding 3 burglary incidents in The Villages in today's issue.

The one on Allaire Loop was confusing. It said the homeowners arrived to find a garage door open. Does that mean they accidentally left the garage door open when they left or was it a small side door? First thing I would be asking - after which door was open, would be to see if they had any workmen in the house recently who knew a small safe was there.

The first mentioned in the article was someone called the police because "some change" was missing from his car - that he was unsure if the car was locked or not. Some change was missing? Unless it was a large container of change on the seat, who would know they were missing change? I keep a small baggie of quarters in the side pocket for meters but that is out of view and I would not know it was gone until I reached for it - and there is not more than $2.50 in it. Sounds strange, doesn't it?

The one on Adrienne Way sounds like the door was pried open.

Three is what I was told by Sumter County Sheriffs office. . Really kind of close together. This was in the last 12 days. I am thinking they didn't mention another one for sure earlier in Sanibel. Which would make TWO kick ins and four burglaries all together. One mentioned was change from a car. One mentioned that nothing was stolen but the door kicked in. (???)One mentioned involved a safe, but the earlier kick in involved a safe too. (That is curious)

She assured me that they are really working on this problem. I hope they catch these low life critters soon.

I do NOT mean to challenge anything said earlier by any posters, just to restate for people off campus.

Good post.

This whole subject is curious, Gracie, and getting "curiouser".

Having followed these threads I did some math. The result indicates a veritable crime wave is rampant. The facts seem to indicate otherwise.

This has been a tempest in a tea pot. All it has accomplished is upset a lot of people unnecessarily and add ammunition for the doom and gloomers.

Thanks for taking the time to call the authorities and informing us of the facts. I would like to think this would put an end to this but the doom and gloomers are not easily satisfied.

I appreciate the information contained here on the recent burglaries south of 466A. The posters helped me alert my neighbors in Pinellas that there were a number of robberies east of us. Some of these robberies included doors kicked in. Older posts north of 466A included information on open garages being robbed. This has helped me personally, as I no longer leave my garage open even when I am doing yard work. We are also vigilant in locking our doors and watching for any suspicious activity. South of 466A we have had a recent wave of criminal activity, but I think that when all the building is completed there will be less strangers all over place. The Villages is a safe place to live and overall has a low crime rate, but it pays to stay alert.

The math I did reading all the posts about all the burglaries, resulted in four burglaries if you count the first one months ago in Sanibel. Some readers may be confused by posters giving different particulars and think posters are talking about more than four burglaries, but I only got four out of this. And now the Sun has confirmed the latest three. (Can't remember if they confirmed the first one in Sanibel, but there was proof it happened.)

I don't believe anyone on this forum lied about any burglaries. So I don't see this as a tempest in a teapot. I see it as posters warning others to be vigilant.

It's my teapot, by golly, and I'm ready to fight for truth and justice. It's only a tempest if you think the homeowners with kicked in doors and missing their wedding rings aren't suffering.

I'm in a swarm of construction and was leaving the hood today when I followed an unmarked truck going round and round the neighborhood. I stayed on him till he went out of my hood and into the next one, where he finally stopped at a vacant house. Long story short, they are follow up painters who couldn't find section 211. Indeed they behaved suspiciously, and I got their tag, truck id, names, etc....

There was a post, in another thread on this, that had the owners email in it and it said that the sliders were popped (not much of a feat). The bedroom was rifled (night stands are always first, that is where most people keep a gun) and they stole tools. Probably opened the garage door and walked to their waiting car after grabbing tools.

I find it odd that these guys are batting 1000 on hitting empty homes, they have to be watching, or able to watch while they are here on legitimate business.

I appreciate that there has been a heavy presence by the sheriff recently.

Usually a good sign to attack house, is when everything is closed up tight. Could be workers, who have been working in neighborhood, whether be lawn care or something else. Each time they arrive in area, nothing has changed on house they were eyeing. Exterminaters, are another culprit. After they are done, they leave the receipt stuck in door, and it stays there for weeks or months. Good neighbors are good to have, who check home, and pick up notices, papers and other objects that could be a give away. I take care of my neighbors homes on both sides of me. When they are gone, I check house every 4 or 5 days, just to see if anything was disturbed etc

Well if informing villagers that bad actors are out and about is forming a tempest in a teapot then I want to thank those tempesters.

It is without doubt that these members are very alert about events happening here and I for one appreciate the time and effort they expend in keeping us informed

And by the way in some areas its called Neighborhood Watch

I am wondering, is there a phone number to call for the sheriff's department other than calling 911?
If we see a suspicious vehicle roaming in our area and want to give a heads up to local law enforcement to come and take a look, make their presence more visible, I wonder if that would help that neighborhood in deterring break-ins, a sort of a Neighborhood Watch without the signage.

Perhaps along with all the energy efficiency that's been built into homes in TV in the last few years, they could come up with some security items to be included in a house build. Starting with a better door frame system, more secure windows, and locking system for sliders.

Just for information. Watching tv this morning and saw an advertisement from Bright House Network for an alarm system. No contract . If you go to to their website you can get all the information. I would guess this would be good for people living south of 466a which bright house serves. I have their tv service for a year now and no problems.
Happy New Year

Bridgeport at Miona Shores home burglarized while couple sleeps

January 3, 2014 By Meta Minton (http://www.*******************/author/meta-minton/) 20 Comments (http://www.*******************/sheriffs-office-investigating-rash-villages-break-ins/#comments)
A Village of Bridgeport at Miona Shores home was burglarized early Friday morning as a husband and wife were sleeping in their bedroom.
The wife attempted to wake the husband at 3:37 a.m. thinking she heard a noise, but they went back to sleep. The woman then got up at 4:15 a.m.
She immediately noticed that their dogs, usually secured behind a doggie gate, were roaming about the house, located in the 1100 block of Miona Shores Drive, according to Lt. Bobby Caruthers of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
She and her husband soon discovered that a screen on the lanai had been cut. Entry was gained through a sliding glass door.
Items taken in the break-in included a 50-inch flat screen television, a digital camera and a Macintosh computer, Caruthers said.
This makes eight burglaries which have taken place in the past 60 days in The Villages.
Of the seven burglaries, four included forced entry by kicking in the front door, two gained entry through forcing open a sliding glass door and the final burglary was to an automobile, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The burglaries have occurred on the following dates:
• Nov. 3 in the Village of Pinellas at Cedar Grove.
• Nov. 20 in the Village of Sanibel.
• Nov. 21 in the Village of Fernandina.
• Dec. 18 in the Village of Glenbrook.
• Dec. 19, again in the Village of Sanibel.
• Dec. 24 in the Village of Polo Ridge.
• Dec. 26, again in the Village of Fernandina.
Villages Homeowners Association Director-at-Large Irv Markely, a resident of the Village of Bridgeport at Miona Shores, has been trying to keep his neighbors aware of such incidents and sent out an email blast to his neighborhood encouraging vigilance.
Lt. Nehemiah Wolfe urges Villagers to take advantage of the sheriff’s free home inspection program. Through it, a member of the sheriff’s office will visit a home and provide tips on securing the home. You can schedule an appointment by calling 689-4600.
He added that neighbors looking out for neighbors is also effective.

:coolsmiley: Thanks for the update Gracie. For some of us who have been up North since Thanksgiving---really appreciate it! Great to be back in TV.

There is always an "uptick" of burglaries during this time of the year----to me--important to keep things in perspective and not get paranoid---concerned and aware---- yes. Keep in mind, 99% plus of the workers in our neighborhood are honest hard working individuals trying to provide for themselves and their families.

Following workers around etc. etc. I don't advise----leave the detective work to the professionals in law enforcement.

If in the world, I would say Singapore, although I don't think I'd be very happy living under such tight restrictions. You can't even buy chewing gum there unless it's prescribed by a dentist and bought at a pharmacy!

Could you please provide the tag, truck ID etc., so that we can keep an eye out? We just saw a similar large white truck (unmarked) driving around Adrienne Way and Asher Path; looked like they were lost??? Hard to say.
So, were they really anything to worry about, or legit?

I think it wise to see something say something.

When I spoke to the sheriff's office they seemed to encourage us to do so. And it isn't the emergency line. They have staff for just these kinds of issues.

Which truck do you want the information for?

It's not tying up the Sheriff's line if you see something suspicious.
There is a non-emergency line for your personal questions.

BTW there are hundreds of white trucks in and around TV everyday.

You could have acted like a helpful Villager and asked the truck driver if you could help him find whatever specific address he wanted. If he could not come up with one immediately, smile and leave. But copy down the license plate and call the non-emergency sheriff line immediately.
