Hubris and stuff

Boomer. What does hubris mean?

Boom, in my mind you are a combination of Mother Teresa, Mary Poppins and that woman on television that knows about finances. I can't think of her name.

But the best part is that you are a Cincinnati girl. BUT are you EAST or WEST of 75?

Oh Gracie, about that hubris thing, that having excessive pride or confidence. It'll get me every time. I was way too proud of the first post I wrote. I thought it was oh so perfect. I would cast calm upon the waters with it. Everyone would be overwhelmed by its magnificence. The sun would shine and the birdies would sing. And I would somehow be looking just like Grace Kelly as I bestowed my words upon TOTVland.

And so I was punished by the :cus: timing out and losing it all -- forever.

Remember those stories from mythology? Like the one about the guy who flew too close to the sun and he crashed and burned. In those old stories, if those mortals got carried away with their own wonderfulness, (Is that a word?) they always fell and fell hard. I was thinking my first post was so wonderful. I was guilty of hubris. Ah. . .for one brief, shining moment. . . in my mind.

Boomer

(Uh, I thought I did BOOM. Well, sort of. Just a little BOOM, maybe. Oh well.)

Jan, please don't be discouraged. So many of us really love TOTV. It keeps us snowbirds connected, even ones like me who don't keep up with things.

villages07 10-08-2008 09:35 PM

Full Moon???

Jan, Tony, DK....

Like the cicadas, we seem to go through these periodic cycles where some simple issue/statement/forum topic takes on a life of its own and turns ugly. The admins have the duty and the right to intervene when they feel things are getting out of control or too un-civil. It's never an easy call and will always end up ticking off someone, but, we'll get over it and move past it.

TOTV is a wonderful resource and meeting place. For old timers, newbies, and wannabes it is a tremendous source of information. It is a great way to meet people in your new hometown before you ever get here. And, great people they are. We live in a beautiful, wonderful community. We have much to be thankful for in TV and TOTV. Think before you post and sometimes think again before you decide whether a topic is even worth posting a negative reply. Often times it's better just to let it slide and remain silent.

To our admins, thank you so much for this wonderful site and all the work and soul you invest in it. Like the angst with the new version (which has now died down) these flareups will come and go. Please know that the vast majority of forum members really enjoy this site and appreciate your efforts.

chelsea24 10-08-2008 09:42 PM

Great Site!

Just wanted to add my thanks to you 3 admins. Without this site I would never have made all the wonderful lifelong friends I have. Especially in such a short time. We've been here less than a year and we have found people we truly love spending time with. The cruise was wonderful too!

I know you put up with a lot (moi?) but I'll forever be grateful for the friendships I've made here because of you. Thank you. Sincerely, chels

Shirleevee 10-08-2008 10:25 PM

Thank you Administrators! You all do a great job! I love this site!

V07, I agree with you, "think before you post and sometimes think again". We all make mistakes and no one is perfect. Let's be a little kinder to one another.

Mikitv 10-08-2008 10:35 PM

I love TOTV and I think y'all do a wonderful JOB. You have to put up with a lot of different personalities, likes and dislikes, but don't let them discourage you.

If people don't like what has been written don't read it. That simple! I don't agree with everything I read, that is my opinion only and the other person is entitled to theirs. We should all remember we are adults and treat each other with respect.

I know that you as the administrators put a lot of effort and time into this wonderful Forum and I for one appreciate it. It took me awhile to acquaint myself with the new format but I like it.

You as administrators have to make a lot of hard decisions and I for one would not like to have that job.

This is such a great place to learn, meet people, and chat I don't know what I would do without it everyday.

Barefoot 10-08-2008 11:06 PM

Jan, thanks for your post, which gently guided us back to realizing how blessed we are to have this site available to us.

It was fascinating to get some insight into the life of an Admin and the mounds of mail that you receive. I really had no idea of the extent of the effort you all expend.

I know we must seem like a bunch of bratty school-yard kids at times, in need of a referee at recess time. And I'm sure we all appreciate your patience.

We really are grateful for the time and resources the admins devote to this wonderful site. :clap2:

chelsea24 10-08-2008 11:06 PM

Agreed!

Brightspot should not have been singled out for taking a thread in the wrong direction. It was the other poster that instigated the post and took it in the wrong direction and she got away with it completely. We all know who she was and is and it will not sit right with us until this is resolved. The Admins seem to scold us and then put us on a guilt trip and we all fall at their feet and tell them how wonderful they are. Well maybe they are great guys for managing this site, but right is right. Don't camouflage the truth and misconstrue the facts to protect an advertiser ( at least that is what I hear she is). That is not professional at any level. Brightspot you have had your off days but not this time. You did nothing wrong but you became the goat. No justice here. JohnnyM

Well said Johnny. You're right.

Count Our Blessings

Villages Kahuna used to have a saying in his signature block that was something to the effect, "I hope my greatest problem is finding a donkey in the middle of the road."

Are we the lucky ones or what? We live in TV, have a great forum to communicate, and are enjoying a lifestyle not had by many.

I am just counting my blessings.

And to borrow Brightspot's signature quote (and it is a good one), " They won't always remember what you said but they will always remember how you made them feel."

We have much for which to be thankful.

Cassie. I read your blog and posted too. I am sorry you were hurt. It is too bad that you focused on people jumping on you because you asked for help for your friends moving. That wasn't it at all. I have said this to my children, so many times.

Look around you. What do you see? Do you see other people your age hanging out here?

And something that I heard from my much loved Uncle Ernie.

YOU CAN'T LEARN ANY YOUNGER.

Don't be sad Cassie. Find friends who will comfort you. I will be your older friend. BUT it is not the same as hanging out with people who are experiencing life at the same age. You are the mother of a little girl. You need a support group of friends who have little ones the same age.

Blessings and comfort and wisdom to you little Cassie.

samhass 10-09-2008 07:23 AM

It's another beautiful day in TV. Be happy, count your blessings. With all the strife in the world, the last place we need more is here in our happy place.
Let's all be happy again.:)

samhass 10-09-2008 08:33 AM

You know, chatters talk might be a great place to ask for non-essential help like tkret/cassie asked for. Obviously you would have to bribe many of us to get us to do work for someone that has all their working arms, legs and backs.
If you think it would get buried in this thread, start a new one. Nothing prevents anyone from doing a shoutout on TOTV. Hey, anyone wanna come over and pull weeds out of my flower beds?

Hyacinth Bucket 10-09-2008 10:32 AM

Hi, I need some help.

I can not find JohnnyM's original post nor can I find him listed under Members List. Where did he go? where did his post go?

Please either send me an email or post on this thread.

I am trying to understand what happened.

Thanks.

Hyacinth. I need to email you. I got side tracked. I can't wait to meet you in person. We are all going to have so much fun this winter!!!!:a040::laugh::clap2:

Karen83 10-09-2008 10:43 AM

HB, I am the same boat as you. I was off line a few days during the move and am clueless as to what happened! But, in the long run it sounds like that may be a good thing!

I look forward to meeting you too!

Thank you for this post Sam...I am sure that is a good idea...but I did want to make clear that tkret had nothing to do with my request. We had a conversation about his move....I had the idea and posted...he is the one that ultimately pulled the plug on the idea as he was worried...he still may be interested in providing beer and pizza....I don't think he mind us asking for that.....huh tkret? Kathie wants her beer and pizza...I will have wine... :icon_wink:

As for your weeds....I will help....only if you point out which are weeds and which are not....otherwise you may be upset ending up with all of your good stuff in the rubbage.... A green thumb is something I do not have....

Pizza and beer (and some cheap rot-gut wine) sounds like a plan so long as we can put this behind us. As I have stated in previous threads I have used www.emove.com in the past for loaders and unloaders and they have never let me down ... will do so again.

Yes, GG, it's little ol' me and if you think I am the center of controversy NOW ... just wait until I'm an actual resident. Before long they'll be selling tickets to witness my execution at break of dawn.

Rokinronda 10-09-2008 03:50 PM

Yeah really, you trouble maker TKRET!!!!

Folks, I figured this out a long while back. Cassie meant no harm. Really.

ONLY QUESTION NOW IS........party at your place on the 8th, TKRET??? Kidding!

Rokinronda,
I'm being taken to woodshed in another thread ("Not Much Activity"). I don't know how I've sunk so low so quickly. I fear that, if I give out my arrival date, the Neighborhood Watch will forbid my entrance. "If it don't fit, you must acquit".

Boomer 10-09-2008 04:31 PM

Now, tkret, just think about it a minute

tkret,

Think about it.

You are a single man.

You are moving to TV.

Trust me, your arrival date is already known.

Oh, and I see you are a man in uniform, too. Look out.

Pretty soon you will have so many things to do that you will forget all about us here. (sigh)

One of my favorite television shows was "Coach." If you have ever watched it, you know about Luther. There is an episode where Luther moves to a retirement community. If you can find that somewhere, you really should watch it.

Congratulations on getting started on this new part of your life. Keep us posted, here. (sigh) You probably won't have time though.

Thank you Boomer. I will ALWAYS have time for the people of TOTV but the real question is: will they have time for me and WILL THEY EVEN WANT TO!

yes, a man in uniform. that was taken in Norfolk, VA shortly before they gave me the uniform with the stripes on it. :police:

Have you noticed that it's only the ladies taking shots are me? What have I ever done to them? :1rotfl: :1rotfl:

thanks, again, for your kind words. Hope to see you soon.

Sweetie is in Jeckyl Island playing 36 holes of golf a day with his buddies from Columbus, Ohio. He has the car and Helene and I have ventured out in the golf cart. Feeling more independent with it. My friend and her husband arrive today for a life style visit. Changed the kitty litter again, and it is a problem. Thinking of having an exhaust fan put in the bedroom linen closet where we keep it. Has anyone done that? We change the litter every day and it is still stinky.

For some reason last nights posts on TOTV made me feel down.

Oh GG,

Don't worry. Be happy.

There was sleet for a little while last night in Cincinnati. And today it is colder than a witch's you-know-what and gray, gray, gray out there.

So go out and bask in the sunshine that I bet you have today. There is no sunshine in Cincinnati right now.

-------------------------------------------------------------

GG, perhaps you should put the litter box somewhere with a little ventilation .. indoor laundry room perhaps, or guest bedroom? I would think a stinky litter box in the linen closet would mean stinky sheets and towels. :faint:

I assume you are using a good kind of clumping litter. I keep Snert's litter box in a bedroom, use a good clumping litter, and clean it twice a day. There is never an odour.

Fireboy is back in Canada right now. If you and Helene need a drive somewhere while Sweetie is away, just let me know.

Sure it counts or go find a neighbor. Mine just walked in and I :evil6: unloaded and thanked them for listening to me vent. Do I feel better? Not really. We're soooo ready to get out of KY and get to TV. Look later this week for NEW virtual tour. I gave strict instructions to our Realtor "Don't you die on me"!!! Yeah, previous agent had the big one. I hope he's selling the hell outa the pearly gated units.

To TV friends we've made - keep the faith. We'll get there eventually. Nazi dogs, Prancer, Katrina, all need a playmate. Not to mention PIA.

Boomer 11-16-2008 07:32 PM

Boomer that I am, I have friends who are entering the 60's. Their own 60's. The ones that seemed so far away back in the other 60's.

Have you ever tried to find a birthday card specifically for birthday number 60?

Every single one I could find was all sappy and respectful and dignified. Like I would be sending it to some wizened sage of the tribe or something. They were just awful. Most of them were in shades of purple with various flower arrangements all over them.

The ones for turning 50 were just fine. (I thought about buying one of those and converting the 5.) But what's with the ones for turning 60? Have those people who design cards ever met any real 60 year-olds?

So anyway, I found a card finally. But it did not have an age on it. It was just one of those generally smart alecky cards that women like to send to other women. So I wrote a little note on it about b'day number 60. But while I was writing the note, I nearly ruined the card and had to pen a little apology for making a mess of it. I did not have my bifocals on and I wrote part of what I was saying completely off the edge of the card.

This is so not fair.

Had an appropriate card been available I would not have needed my bifocals. (which I could not find at the time, but later noticed, when I looked in a mirror, that I had propped them up on top of my head.)

Oh, and I forgot to mail the card today.

At this time, there are 44 members and 52 guests online. Does anyone else find it strange that guests find TOTV interesting enough to visit and read. (More guests than members, apparently!) But they are unwilling to become members. Wonder why.

renielarson 12-27-2008 09:05 PM

9pm: 37 members and 59 guests

Is it me or does it seem that membership has dropped from 6 months ago? Also, it seems to me, that this site's daily activity has drastically decreased.

We used to be able to see the stats with the old format but can't anymore with this new format. Wouldn't it be interesting to see a graphical display showing the number of daily posts over the past 6 months? Or am I the only one wondering?
