Once history is re-written and evidence of slavery is removed, what will the gripe be then? I guess the divide in getting there will remain.

Perhaps we should change New York to BLM. We cannot have too much idiocy now.

It will end when decent, rational people rise up and make it end! Sitting around wringing our hands and lamenting the problem isn’t going to do it.

Right now I'm feeling a lot of sadness. Sadness for our country and all that is going on.

Davem4616, this is just a BLM thing to tell the legal system who's boss or who they think is. They've got the legal system so scared that they're getting there way with their demands. Also it a strategy for to get one of the presidential candidates elected. Just my opinion! I agree with you totally, if what you say is true, I haven't heard this one yet!

Slavery has been present nearly as long as civilization. Many groups, perhaps most, were enslaved throughout history. It was customary to raid, plunder, and enslave. This country was among the first to realize it is wrong and to abolish it. Since then the US has tried hard to give extra advantages to those who suffered through employment, school admissions, housing, financial programs, and continues to looks for more avenues.
So, all of this violence and agitation is about something else.

Let’s just set race aside for awhile. This was an organization that Wayne was about the 4th president of they were all about finding communists under every rug. They worked closely with the head commie hunter McCarthy . My father was brought before this committee . He had been a union organizer all over USA In the 1930’s and fought in the Spanish Civil War where he faced German troops years before Americans did. WhenWW2 started he probably wouldn’t have been drafted because of age but he went anyway , and when he parachuted in on D Day he was 37 . McCarthy and guys like Wayne had my father branded a communist and thrown out of a National Union Job for his union activities and fighting in Spain he was not bitter for himself he still had an iron workers union card but for all the people who were destroyed by McCarthy and men like Wayne who backed him , did my father and I still watch his movies yes , like he said there were worse offenders but I couldn’t care less about his name coming down , he went along with destroying many other names . While reading many post here I can’t help thinking that quite a lot of people here probably still think Joe McCarthy is a great guy . I read somewhere where he still has a statue in town . Hmmmmm maybe we should send someone out there hmmmm

I grew up in New Mexico and until the virus all but shut down travel visited often over the years as I maintain business interests there. Every American Indian I have ever met or known there identifies himself/herself as an Indian, be they Navajo, Pueblo or Apache.

Also I was married to a hispanic lady from NM for 26 years. She has six siblings. No one in her family ever refers to themselves as Latino or Latina, ever. A DNA test showed she is about 28% American Indian which is probably par for the course over there as the Spanish started settling the area in 1598 or thereabouts.

Recently some rioters tried to tear down a statue of Onate in Albuquerque and were stopped but the authorities did afterwards remove it. He and his outfit treated the Indians terribly and enslaved some.

The area is tricultural: Indian, Hispanic and Anglo. While there are no doubt underlying tensions over many matters both past and present most folks get along most of the time and intermarriage is common and not even noteworthy.

Interestingly enough, John Wayne was attracted to hispanic women. His widow, Pilar, now 91 years of age, is Peruvian and well loved in Newport Beach.

When I had entered a ministerial college, the LA riots were in full swing.
I came home for summer and watched TV with my family. My dad, who always said he prayed daily to God to be given a gift for understanding others, suddenly blurted out, "Send them all back [to Africa]."

Nobody else in the family ever openly stated thoughts like that. Anyway, the number of Blacks that we knew were an extreme minority in NH.

My dad had feet of clay, and I was shocked beyond belief and felt betrayed by him. I thought everybody in the family felt similarly about colored people, friendly, welcoming, something to offer as citizens.

None of Dad's kids ever grew into the hatred part for any other people of color, to this very day. And, Boy, am I glad of that.

No, don't rush there merely to see a free advertisement for the government with beautiful fireworks bursting in the dry-weed background of it all.

I'd laugh if it weren't for the poverty of thought the government had to allow this to happen. It's like tearing the monument down by sullying it with politics.

Yesterday in St Louis they had a big protest about renaming the city because apparently France's King Louis the 9th MIGHT have been racist.. Though he was the only King of France to be Canonized by the Catholic Church it really doesn't matter.. I don't believe that much of this is even being driven by the minorities/blacks. I think all of this is just white bleeding heart liberals who want to look cool and empathetic. I read that the black women and their families who actually got to portray Aunt Jemima products were incensed at the rebranding.

The silliness of all this statue removals and name changing is getting in the way of the real message. Unfortunately the USA has had racism imbedded in our culture for hundreds of years. Even if we begin now, it will take generations to mute those habits and feelings. Changing statues, names, logos, etc. won’t help al that much.

If only (drop off the edge). The end for me was when the log flume ride at Disney was deemed inappropriate. Seriously?
And how about Princeton? Several presidents of the U.S. including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have been repeatedly referenced as continuing the tradition of Wilsonianism in America. Guess anything related to any of them needs to go too.

This is not the way to come to resolution. All it's doing is creating hate and discontent where there was none, and exacerbating the situation where it already existed (in my humble opinion). It's very sad to me, because people are going to be more 'broad brushed' than ever - in all directions. You can't change the past, you can only move forward in honest efforts.

noslices1 06-28-2020 11:17 AM

Maybe they should rename all the airports. Just give them a number. “I’m flying out of Airport # 327 and landing at Airport # 723.” Then they can start on the State names and then the city names in the same way. Las Vegas Has dibs on City #69.

fdpaq0580 06-28-2020 11:45 AM

Sad to me, too. Revisionism creates division and we don't need that right now.

Stu from NYC 06-28-2020 11:59 AM

If we want to improve over the past how does it help to remove all mentions of it?

We should study the past and understand what earlier times were like and how we are better as a nation and how we can continuously improve.

sloanst 06-28-2020 12:10 PM

A system can not be changed until all vestiges of the previous system are completely erased. This started as protests against the police killing of George Floyd, but the current focus is to destroy our economic and governmental systems and anything that is representative of those systems. BLM is a Marxist organization. I'm not saying that, the co-founder (Patrisse Khan-Cullors) of that organization says that.

And he knew his words were being recorded and to be published which maybe might have made a person more reticent about expressing beliefs that in 1971 were already certain to be seen as racist. This is not a recollection of a chat he privately had with a couple of friends.

Facts are always fun. I have no idea what racist words Mr. Wayne may have uttered in his 30's but your posting of his age was a bit off. He was born in 1909 thus was in his early 60's when those words were spoken.

We are moving to TV but currently live in Newport Beach. We love John Wayne and his legacy. What he said in the 70’s should not held against him 50 years later. We are all products of our upbringing, no matter how racist it was at the time. It is time that teaches us other views...Thank God.

Idiotic that people today who were never slaves should ask people who never owned slaves to pay reparations.

Flew in and out of that airport many times in the 90's. Since Orange County was a conservative enclave back then I just figured that naming it John Wayne was just a reflection of that fact. Never gave it much of a thought after that. Plus it sure did beat LAX.
