Confusion Says, I mean Confucius Says, First and foremost, be faithful to your superiors, keep all promises, refuse the friendship of all who are not like you; and if you have made a mistake, do not be afraid of admitting the fact and amending your ways. NOTHING but words to live by. Nucky Says, I miss those who have made their choices but see the wisdom in doing so. Fraugoofy Says, Peace Out!

Good Morning Sweet Nothings:

Now that you got me started, this one got me into a whole lot of trouble when the nun in grammar caught me passing a note with this joke:

Q. What's big and round and sticks out of a man's pajamas?

A. His head!

:1rotfl: :1rotfl:

Despite getting in trouble with the joke, I actually did quite well in school -- an otherwise good kid. Just always loved those jokes!

NOTHING but look it up. It is a Confucius Quotes About Friendship. Has NOTHING to do with anything other than friendship. Some may think it has something to do with other controversial areas of life. FRIENDSHIP, NOTHING but a gift from GOD that some never truly experience. I'm very lucky, I have.

I had to nothing but read this twice -- the part about "refuse the friendship of all who are not like you". It bothered me. At first it sounded offensive and I thought "this doesn't sound like Nucky to me" until I re-read it.

I assume it means refuse the friendship of those who are not faithful ... don't keep promises ... are afraid of admitting to making mistakes and don't amend their ways. Not as in those who may be culturally, politically, racially or differing in opinions.

I love TOTV but, just like e-mail and text messages, there is always so much that can be misinterpreted with this one-dimensional communication. I prefer talking -- seeing your facial expressions -- hearing your tone -- much easier not to misunderstand. But, sigh, at the moment, it's the best we have.

That's why frequently one of us has had to say to another of us ..."That was a joke" ... since he takes things literally.

Too much room for error. But right now, more importantly I need to get ready for a date with my oncologist so in perspective, none of this is important, is it?

NOTHING but good points.

In doing further research (I like facts :D), and putting it into context (that was missing), Confucius also said..."Have no friends not equal to yourself."

Which I interpret to mean, to also not support those who are immoral, liars, racists, hypocrites, bigots, Etc....and to make sure you set a high personal bar.

Of which, of course...is great advice.

But like you said, the important stuff is to have a good report from your oncologist...so best of luck.
:ho:

I'm back -- just had to add another point --

Whatever we look for, we will find. Here in The Villages, as in everywhere else, I can easily find nothing but bad food, poor drivers, people who can't or won't park correctly, dogs that poop on others lawns, poor service in restaurants, people whose politics are so different from mine, greedy, money-hungry developers, bonds and amenity fees that take advantage of us, inconsiderate neighbors, and unfriendly, intolerant, grumpy old men and cantankerous old women.

But if that is not what I am looking for, here in The Villages, as in everywhere else, I can easily find nothing but good food, considerate drivers, good parking, people who do not save seats in the Squares, great service in restaurants, people whose politics are the same as mine or those who will not judge me because of it, successful developers who have created a paradise, bond and amenity fees that are fair, considerate neighbors, dogs who do not poop on my lawn and wonderfully happy, mature and nice men and women.

I have only gone skiing once in my life and I took a lesson. I learned one concept that has served me well in all other parts of my life. The instructor told me "if you ever feel out of control and are racing down the slope, don't stare at that tree you think you are going to hit, turn your head and look in the directions you want to go." What direction do you want to go in? I want better health, and less drama. All it takes is the decision to see differently. And that goes for relationships as well, which for any of us who are or have ever been married, we know how true that is.

So there. My two cents.

"Confucius insists on symmetry in true friendship, advising, “do not have as a friend anyone who is not as good as you are.”

Can Confucians Have Friends? | Issue 126 | Philosophy Now

If that is a choice you make, and I speak of anyone who feels they may be better than others, you, in my opinion, limit your ability to learn or understand.

His philosophy was not limited to being "like you, it was much more specific, but your friends indeed need to be lesser than you. I think back on my long long life, and value lessons I have learned from many who in some fashion could have been considered not as good. Older I get, the more I realize how much there is to learn if life from everybody, and how it is just not my nature to even consider myself better than my friends, or for that matter anyone.

I have not read Confucius much at all, but you open the door to a philosophy I could never endorse, but am sure I can learn from.

Hi Bucco,

Nothing if not nice to meet you.

I have not read Confucius and no one will ever accuse me of being an intellectual. And I don't enjoy debates just for the sake of debating.

I have read that if you play tennis with someone who is worse than you, your game will get worse and, conversely, if you play with someone who is better than you, your game will improve.

All my life I have looked to those who are better than me -- as role models -- whether it be with finances or getting ahead on the job, etc, etc., etc. And yes, I can learn from those who may not be "as good as me" (whatever the heck that means) but I will surely improve if I hang out with those who are better.

DH is giving me the "evil eye" since we need to leave in about 20 minutes and I am not dressed so forgive me if I don't respond until much later -- I really have to run.

I have no problem with your post in general. Just would simply say that your comps of.....playing tennis versus befriending another strikes me as curious

I suppose it me....I just do not feel that superior to anyone, and I wonder the criteria for those who follow the principal espoused....what makes you better then another ?
