That is a sylvester palm that some idiot diamond cut WAY too much and WAY too early after planting, increasing the chance and severity of any shock in the transplant.

You probably won't see a rat because they're mostly nocturnal. But please rest assured (:22yikes:!) that your tree(s) have been and probably are home to some of the critters. They live in the canopy of palm trees whether you like it or not, and that's a fact!

But mostly, those rats make homes on the ground in the Muhley grass, Pampas etc.

No such thing as a palm rat, till the anti-palm establishment in TV got computers. You know, if it's on the internet, it must be true.

Do the rats eat the palm or seeds? Do they require an additional source of food? or is the palm enough to sustain the critter.

Rats eat nuts, seeds, dog food, garbage, fallen fruit, vegetables and you can pretty much name it..
They do not eat the palm itself.
