Warning. When shopping at Aldi Grocery store

I shopped today at the Summerfield Aldi store by Lowes and Home Depot on 441/27. Attached to the fresh meat rack was a yellow store sign advising that the choice round steak was $4.99 a lb. Directly behind the sign were cuts of choice round steak, however the price was $5.99 a lb. on the packages. I located the manager and related the price difference between the advertising sign and the actual price to be charged. The manager's response was " So, what is the problem?" I told them that the price advertised should reflect the price I would be charged. He then asked what I thought he should do and I told him to change the display sign. He refused and said that the lower price yellow sign would remain and it was the corporate policy not to change the yellow signs. He then stated that it was better than no sign even though he knew it was not the correct price.
I later sent an email to the corporate office asking them to clarify what I consider to be blatant and deceptive practices.
It would be very wise to double check your prices when shopping at Aldi grocery store. The manager definitely has an attitude and was unwilling to correct a wrong. I was not trying to buy the meat at the lower price.

dirtbanker 07-09-2014 04:32 PM

No yellow signs to worry about over at the Fresh Market (3740 Wedgewood Ln). The manager and employees do not have a bad attitude either!

Cisco Kid 07-09-2014 05:07 PM

Doesn't it really all come down to pickle slices on a cheeseburger.

This sounds like a big communication problem.

Did he say that when you rang out at the cash register, the higher price was the one you would pay?

In many instances, the cash register has been programmed to ring up the special price regardless of what is stamped on the package.

Bambi 07-09-2014 07:05 PM

He said that the price would be $5.99 at check out. I didn't buy it.....went to Publix. It wasn't the price.....it was the principle.

Sounds like this manager may not have been the brightest bulb on the tree.

Your cheeseburger had pickle slices?

Dr Winston O Boogie jr 07-09-2014 08:59 PM

Sounds like you had a legitimate beef.

Bonanza 07-09-2014 11:01 PM

You did the right thing by sending a message to the corporate office.
When there is a problem, if you don't tell management, nothing will ever change.
If you tell management and they do nothing, you go a step further as you did.

So often, management is not aware of issues unless the public makes them aware of them.

wendyquat 07-09-2014 11:30 PM

I've been in Aldis a few times and really don't see the advantage. Looks to me like slightly cheaper prices for very inferior products!

Good for you going to Publix, sometimes we need to vote with our feet.
It sounds like false advertising by Aldi to me.
And good for you emailing corporate about it..

Sounds like this manager has a comprehension problem. Your point was obvious.

chuckinca 07-10-2014 01:56 AM

When "Shopping" one tries to find the best value. Complaining about less than best value items could take all your time.

If you "shop" at Aldi, Publix, Walmart, Winn Dixie, Fresh Market, et al you will find some best value items in each store but no store will have all best value items.

.

memason 07-10-2014 05:48 AM

Actually, being overcharged for sale items seems to be common practice in almost all stores these days. I don't just mean the supermarket, but other retail establishments, as well.

There will be a price marked on the shelve or the clothing rack, but when you checkout, the computer will not have that sale price, so you get charged normal price. If you don't catch it, well, you know...

Our experience has been that about 30% of the our sales items will ring up at the normal price and we have to tell the cashier... Don't think it's intentional, but the computer just doesn't get updated in a timely fashion.

So, it's not just Aldi's...it's happening everywhere.

rubicon 07-10-2014 06:10 AM

By law the advertised price is what they have to sell it for . It was probably a Wednesday special Aldi's is a remarkable store for many reasons and we have found the empoyes there to be very helpful and polite. Aldi's also own Trader Joe's Aldi's is not the only store that has made this mistake.

If corporate supports the store managers decision, then I would shop at any other store rather than at Aldi's. I never have been in Aldi's but now, I won't even go.

People listen, when you hit them, in the wallet!!!! :D

Rollie 07-10-2014 06:49 AM

Milk is a dollar a gallon cheaper, I wouldn't call that slightly.

Aldi

You have to be careful and check the prices for sure at any store, I go around all the stores to get what I consider for me to be the best buys, sometimes Aldi's products are not so good but I would get quite a lot there, other than the meat. Freshmarket is good!

I too have noticed that some of the Aldi's employees at this store have an attitude. When this occurs, it is usually a trickle down of a poor attitude from the manager. I would like to add something to your post if I may. I like Wal Marts but the summerfield often has produce for sale that is actually rotting. Last Sinday I was planing to buy some of the Washington State bing cherries. Every bag contained at least 10% rotten and molding fruit. I have lived in the Villages from the very first this WalMart was opened. In all those years I have never seen the manager out on the floor. I asked an employee if they ever see the manager on the floor, this particular employee said NEVER !!

Happy Snowbird 07-10-2014 11:42 AM

We shop at Aldi's in Leesburg and haven't had any negative issues. Aldi's is considerably cheaper than Publix on most items. Even small savings add up.

Madelaine Amee 07-10-2014 11:57 AM

I actually enjoy shopping the variety of stores we have available here. I mainly use Publix, but I go to Sam's for certain items, Aldi's for their Milk, Butter, some of their vegetables and I love the huge variety of German foods and chocolate they have, and the other half likes their wine prices. I also shop Win-Dixie (love their shaved beef and Hoagie rolls to make my own Phili Steak subs) and I like their meats, and I also shop WalMart for certain items, and let's not forget Fresh Market, love that gourmet store. Personally, I think we are very fortunate to have as many choices for shopping that we do have here. I have NEVER lived anywhere where so many food shops were available in such a small area, and I have NEVER had the time to shop around before so I am a happy camper.

I think some of us complain too much and don't see just how fortunate we are. So you'll hear no gripe from me about our availability of stores!:BigApplause:

Would love to know how/if Aldi corporate office replies to Bambi's email. Please keep us posted.

sailor47 07-10-2014 05:12 PM

I hope corporate doesn't waist a lot of resources answering the complaint. It kind of makes me mad when people jump on an error and demand the unreasonable price. I don't think they will because that is how they keep costs to us down, no wasted hand holding. But this is just me your opinion will most likely vary.

Aldis runs a tight ship no waste no fuss. That is the reason they are sooo much less than Publics and beats Fresh market like a bad drum.

We use them for Butter Lettuce over a dollar cheaper per head. I shouldn't tell this because they will probably run out from the stampede. Hass Avacodos always way less expensive, cauliflower, and many other products.

My biggest complaint is they only accept cash or debit cards. I don't carry cash and I don't trust debit cards. So every time we go to Aldis we have to stop at an atm. But a small inconvenience for lower prices and sometime superior products.

Like all stores they have some bad product. I remember I got a steak at Fresh Market that was really tough and expensive.

I love Aldi's and have never had a problem. Just wanted to mention that two months ago I was checking out of Publix in Colony, put my own bags (3) on the track in front of my groceries; lo and behold when I got home I noticed that the check-out person charged me for my bags. You might want to take this as a
BEWARE of PUBLIX story, but I thought it was a hoot!chilout

I purchased green beans at Fresh Market that were $1.99 per pound......they charged me $11.99 per pound. I was given a refund so I returned for other purchases later. I bought Italian sweet sausage which, I think, were $3.99 lb.
When I got home I noticed that the package was stamped "pork chops, $4.99 per pound". I went back and brought this to the managers attention and he, again, gave me a refund. The last straw was during the holiday season when I bought tortilla chips. It was December, I was making something to take to a gathering. When I opened the package, the smell about knocked me over. Judging by the smell, the chips were old and rancid. Sure enough, when I checked the date, the bag had an October expiration date. The chips carried a Fresh Market brand. There definitely was nothing fresh about them. I had been burned three times and decided not to go back to the store. I emailed Fresh Market headquarters and told them my story. In their reply, the representative assured me that the manager would want to know and that my name had been passed on to the store and I would be called (I never was). So I never returned and I have repeated this story to everyone. There are no yellow signs but there are other ways to cheat a customer.

KathyN 07-11-2014 08:19 AM

I'm not certain, but I believe it is against the law to deceptively advertise one price and charge another. In MA., supermarkets often had a policy that if something was mis-marked you got it for free.

Villageswimmer 07-11-2014 11:57 AM

Aldi's is a German company with a unique and very successful business model. All business, no warm and fuzzy. Could it be that what some see as bad attitudes is simply a reflection of very busy employees doing their jobs? Think about it. Do you ever see their employees standing around chitchatting?

They pay their employees very well and are a demanding employer. IMO it's largely a cultural thing.

AFA this particular incident, who really knows? Have you ever had a bad day or made a mistake? I don't think it rises to the level of "warning" needed. If anyone thinks there's a conspirancy afoot, don't shop there. Geez!

claricecolin 07-11-2014 12:19 PM

I think how the pricing matching the product varies by state. In MI they would have to match the price plus give you at least an additional $1.00 could be up to 5 times the difference in price. I seem to remember this cut down quickly on pricing errors. NJ did not have that law as I found out. I am assuming that FL operates the same way as when I have pointed it out was told they do not have to match as mistake was made. However, at least I have found that, Publix does and Sweetbay did. Haven't had issue with Winn Dixie yet

justjim 07-11-2014 12:22 PM

Almost every supermarket has its "loss leaders". I'm not going to drive out my gas or use my time to travel around to actually lose money in the long run. If that's your hobby or "thing" to do with your time---no problem.

You wonder how some people make it to manager?

If I'm not mistaken that "unreasonable price" you mention was printed up and posted by Aldi's. They then refused to remove it. Why do you suppose they would do that?
The incorrect sign was still in place yesterday, but I did them a favor and moved it before I left. Oh, before the fake outrage about "stealing their sign", I didn't remove it from the store; I just placed it where it wouldn't "accidentally" mislead customers.

I have been pleased with the groceries and service over there, otherwise I would not have suggested the place. Possibly I have just been lucky.

I've been shopping at Summerfield Aldi's since they first opened several years ago and have never had a problem getting the lower shelf price.

What to do? After everything has been rung up, check your receipt before you leave the store. If you were charged more than what was marked on the shelf, you go back and tell the cashier. It doesn't happen very often; but when it does happen, they will give you a refund.

However, now that someone has moved the sign for the OPs beef product, you may have no basis to complain.
