Momma Mia

Saw Momma Mia today and would recommend it highly.

Re: Momma Mia

I was actually a little disappointed with the movie. I saw the stage production in Vegas, and loved it. It was a cute and happy show. However, the movie came off as being corny. I think part of the problem for me was that they cast the adults too old. The mother and 3 fathers should have been in their early to mid forties. And they should have cast the adult roles with some fabulous singers. It just didn't work for me. (and I love musicals!)

My wfe and her three freinds are going to see this musical at the Bob Carr in September. Supposed to be very good.

Saw Momma Mia with my sisters of the Eagle Lake Hattitudes, all 22 of us loved it. It was reminiscent of the movie musicals i loved. Also i think Meryl Streep deserves an Oscar nomination!

My wife loved the movie.

I think the movie trashed the ABBA work, disrespected it.

I love Meryl, she can do no wrong, but in this movie she was having fun. I would rather see her acting.

I myself sing better than Pierce Brosnan, and I am embarrassed to sing in public because I sing like somebody dropped an anvil. Pierce should be ashamed of himself to subject us to such misery as listening to him.

Tony! Some critics seem to agree with you. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertain..._some_gre.html

The movie was excellent. Do notcompare it with thestage play in LV. It is adifferent venue.

Re: Momma Mia

 Meryl Streep had such a good time in this movie. Her sense of physicality at her advanced (?) age of 59 was inspiring. It didn't matter that the singing and dancing were not the best I've ever seen. As a whole, it was just plain joyful. The older actors reminded me of folks I have seen having fun in TV. When it comes out on DVD I'll buy it for sure to watch again.

My question is: How do you get the songs out of your head??????????

tony 08-05-2008 03:17 PM

Re: Momma Mia

Believe me that after hearing Brosnan sing you won't have the least bit of trouble getting it out of your head.

Maybe that is not right. He is so bad that he ruins the good stuff.

Mamma Mia and Pierce Brosnan's singing voice interview linked below. At least, you are sure that Brosnan's singing voice was not dubbed in as in other movies with big name stars. http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/name...e-brosnan-bond

Re: Momma Mia

I loved the movie even if the men could not sing. I even bought the CD! I know the critics are bashing it bad, but it was so upbeat and happy. Every now and then we need something light and cheerful and this did it for me.

Re: Momma Mia

I'm not bashing older actors, I'm just saying that the roles called for someone younger. The character that Meryl Streep played was supposed to be young and foolish when she got pregnant and her parents disowned her. That is why she was on the Greek Island. She now has a 21 year old daughter. That should mean the character is early forties. Not 59! And her lovers would have been mid to late 40's.

I probably wouldn't have minded them casting the older actors as much if they could really sing and dance. It just didn't cut it for me!

If you plan on buying the soundtrack, do yourself a favor and buy the Broadway soundtrack instead. You'll be lots happier with the sound.

Re: Momma Mia

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought Streep did an excellent job. Pierce Brosnan doesn't need to be able to sing. He's so gorgeous - who cares.

It was light and funny and enjoyable.

The Mamma Mia movie soudtrack seems to be selling really well. http://www.playbill.com/news/article/119567.html

I just saw the movie tonight. I don't like musicals but I do love Abba music. I totally agree with MSNPA and Village Kid. It was upbeat and happy. I thought Meryle Streep was perfect as the mother; she is amazingly agile. Who cares if Brosnan can sing? With his looks, who is really listening to him sing anyway? I left the movie feeling uplifted and joyful. To me, that is a great movie. :#1:

I agree with Barefoot. I absolutely love, love, loved the movie. Brosnan can't sing, Streep was fabulous, Abba music still rings in my ears. Totally made my day.

Absolutely loved this movie!! Meryl Streep was fabulous and I am a big fan of Christine Baranski's. She has a great sense of humor. Loved the part where she fell on the bed and said "i think my feet are getting bigger from all this yoga!" Pierce Brosnon is so good to look at I didn't notice that he couldn't sing!

Left the theater in an upbeat happy mood singing "Dancing Queen" for days!

Re: Momma Mia

Hard to believe Meryl Streep is 59. I thought she looked and acted so much younger; and she seemed to be having so much fun. Lovely and joyous movie.

It's late. At least for me. And I am getting into this "Momma Mia" thread really late. And now I am going to link something here that will convince you that my sense of humor just ain't right. But there is a little story that goes with this.

Around our house, when I invite Mr. Boomer to go to a movie, he always asks me, "Does anything get blowed up? Anything get blowed up real good?"

Well, if it is a movie that I want to see, it is unlikely that anything will get "blowed up real good."

Some of you may recognize the allusion to SCTV's "Farm Film Report" with John Candy and the other guy that I don't know who he is. Anyway, this stuff goes really far back. You know, back to the days when SNL was funny.

In honor of the "Momma Mia" thread, I am linking here the "Farm Film Report" about Meryl Streep.

I know that there may be only one or two people who will think this is funny, but that's OK.

Mr. Boomer only discusses movies in terms of whether or not anything "gets blowed up real good." So that's how we communicate about "film" at the Boomer house. (We still have not gone to see "Momma Mia" but I will figure something out.)

Warning: In this video Meryl Streep is a guest on "Celebrity Blowup" for the "Farm Film Report." Need I say more.

Oh GG,

How well I know.

We also use quotes from Monty Python around our house.

And then there is the just total and complete slapstick that makes me roll on the floor laughing.

I once starred in a total slapstick scene, in my real life. I was walking along, at a local mall, looking into my shopping bag, and no doubt thinking about 3 or 4 different things, simultaneously, when I walked right up the side of the fountain and fell right into the water, all full of pennies.

I was laughing so hard at myself that I could not even get up.

. . .and that's another story.

Definitely a chick flick...and this movie would be a big hit with the Populus of ths Villages.....BUT I have to agree with sschuler1. ....I can add. Dont get me wrong I liked (no enjoyed) the movie but it is difficult to imagine the actors in this situation. 007 should stick to spy stories and he should not have received any of the top billing. Merle Street's daughters was great and I am surprised she did not get better recognition than she did. It does not hurt that we are cruising to greece later this year!!

Re: Momma Mia

Those roles were filled with stars that would help sell a movie, not with actors that were more appropriate for the roles. The girl that played the daughter was wonderful.

Fireboy only goes to disaster films, the more explosions, blow ups and fires the better. I only go to gentle films that leave me joyous and smiling. Needless to say we haven't seen a movie together in years. :dontknow:

We go to different movies in the same theatre so we both get a dose of the movie we crave. We meet afterwards to hold hands and have a coffee. Not very romantic, but it works for us.

One of the best sceens was when one of Meryl Streep girlfriends (The tall one) a was at the bar and had a song and dance number with all the guys...that had to make her day!!

BTW does anyone remember who was the actress who played the daughter.....I thnk she was sweedish!

I can't remember her name, but she was one of the three "plastics" in the movie Mean Girls. She played the really dumb blonde that could predict the weather by feeling her boobs.

Amanda Seyfried is the actress in Mamma Mia who plays the bride.

It was THE film of the summer here in England. It finished last week at theaters nationwide. I also noticed it is now finished at The Villages. Not to worry, it is being released on DVD on November 24th here in UK.
This is a film even my husband enjoyed :) and he is not easy to please :icon_wink:
Dont know if you know, but all the older Greek women in the background of the film, were the local ladies who live on the island where the film was made.

Taltarzac 10-22-2008 11:27 AM

Mamma Mia's release date here in the US is @ in December '08
