Do You Love Your Mattress?
When we finally move into our villa, we'll need mattresses. I'm getting confused at the variety of new mattresses that are available these days, and I hope one of you helpful folks has some advice for me.
The standard mattresses all seem to begin with the letter "S": Sealy, Simmons, Serta, and Springair. There's also the Tempurpedic, the adjustabed, the sleep number bed, horsehair mattresses, and others I don't know anything about. Do you love your mattress? Would you recommend your mattress to everybody you meet? Thanks in advance for any advice! PS: I like a very firm mattress. The last mattress we bought was the "bowling ball" mattress. It's the one where you can drop a bowling ball on one side and the wine glasses on the other side don't spill. Don't believe it. I think that trick only works before they put the cover over the springs. It also has a pillowtop that is way too soft for me. I wouldn't buy that mattress again. |
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Hi uuj,
I love my Sleep Number. The Sleep Number can be all things. In the store they said to find my Sleep Number and stick with it. Well, I don't. I change it from time to time. If you are thinking about a Sleep Number, it is a good idea to go to a store and try one out. But please promise me that you will not tell anyone at the Sleep Number store that I change my Sleep Number all the time. I fear they may come and take my Sleep Number mattress away if they find out. They were pretty into telling me NOT to change the number once I found it. Mr. Boomer never changes his Sleep Number for his side. That is because Mr. Boomer could sleep anywhere on anything. And you, uu, sound like you are a 100. And probably a 100 you will always be. I, on the other hand, am a 35 on some nights. Then maybe a 55. Or a 75 or 80. And even a 100. Or a 25. But please do not tell those people at the Sleep Number store. OK. Boomer Sybil |

Part II
Hi again uuj, I got so carried away in my above post, talking about changing my Sleep Number all the time, that I did not answer that question about whether I would recommend a Sleep Number to everybody. The answer is an unequivocal and resounding, "Yes." In fact, I often go on and on about my Sleep Number, as you can tell. So far I have managed to influence 4 relatives, 2 friends, and my lawyer to buy a Sleep Number. I should probably work for Sleep Number. But they probably would not let me because I would be telling people all the time that they could just go ahead and change their Sleep Numbers whenever they feel like it. You know, I just realized that it is well past Midnight in the Garden of Boomer BeBack. And I know all too well that I should never be permitted to type after midnight because I do things like go on and on about my Sleep Number or make shameless confessions. Goodnight. Boomer, feeling like 35 tonight |
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Boomer,
We have a sleep number bed also, and I've never been wild about it. Ours is pretty old (10), and back then they didn't call it a sleep number, was just called a Select Comfort. I can always see where that piece in the middle is when it's made up, it's higher. Maybe they improved em when they started calling them sleep number beds... |

I will have to check later to see if there is anything in the middle, but I don't think so. Mr. Boomer is still snoozing away so I will wait to start poking around. Actually, Mr. Boomer is the one who makes our bed. This routine started when we were first married. It seems that he does a much better job at bed making than I do and he does it every single day. Uncle Sam taught him how and that's how it gets done. Perfectly. It seems that I could never quite get it right. ;) So far we have never had an inspection of our barracks or whatever, but I guess it could happen. This Army days carryover is only about the making of the bed. Mr. Boomer's desk is a disaster. But come to think of it, our grass always looks really nice and is mowed perfectly. I also do not know how to use the mower. ;) I have found that to make the made bed look its best, I can pump both sides up to 100. I only do that when I know company is coming and somebody might want to see the work we have done throughout this house. So we go into tour mode. Everybody knows how that one goes. But on an everyday basis, I think the bed has nothing sticking up in the middle. I will report later. Boomer |
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Judy,
I particularly like the new commercial where the lady pats the mattress and says "Aww, come up here ONE". I thought that might be the one for you, EweJudy! |
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
We have Tempurpedic and love it. A little pricey but to us worth it.

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Here's my report back to Mint about whether or not the newer version of the Sleep Number has that thing sticking up in the middle. And about some other stuff, too. I am posting and I can't shut up this morning.
The thing in the middle does not seem to be a problem. Ours has a pretty good amount of padding on the top. It's not the one with the most padding. I think it's next to that one. That may be the difference. I don't know if the older ones had all the various choices of padding. But I poked around and did not find much of anything. One of the people I influenced said that if she ever gets another one, she wants one with less padding so she experiences the whole air mattress thing better. She likes hers a lot, but thinks she could have saved some money on doing without the additional padding and liked it even better. When I use a really low number, my side can end up looking like a hammock though. The marketing on these things is something to behold. The website lets you figure out a bunch of stuff, including price. I had always thought they were a lot more expensive than other mattresses. But I found that not to be the case. At least not with what I was looking at in the sheep's store. And I sure would never buy one from just the website, without going to the store to try it out in person. I am sure that many people hate the Sleep Number very much. I think they do have a 30-day trial or something like that. Of course, it's all about conversation and opinion and finally a decision. Just like so many other things. Good luck. Boomer Goldilocks |
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
This is just my opinion but I had one of the worst nights sleep on a sleep number bed. I check into a Raddison Hotel for a 5 nite stay which features and advertises these type beds in their hotels worldwide. I tried each level and could not find anything comfortable so I checked out the next morning and moved to a Crown Plaza which in my opinion has the best sleep system. I have also stayed at Westin Hotels and they too have a very good mattress. Westin Hotel has branded their sleep system and it is available at many mattress stores.

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
I love the humanoid lying on my mattress when I arise in the morning, does that help? :dontknow:
|
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Wow! What a wealth of information you folks are! Thank ewe soooo much!
We're off to check out mattresses today. All the bedding stores are located in a city south of us, so we'll be gone most of the day. I'll report back late tonight. :clap2: :clap2: A big THANK YOU to all! |
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
We've stayed at several Marriott's which have Tempurdic's. I hate them, Wife loves them. The reason I hate them is that the foam forms around you and "captures" you. I roam and roll around at night and fight the foam, plus I think it is hot. Maybe that's the reasons she likes it??? I'm afraid to ask her:)

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
shop very carefully, don't rush, and it's more than price. There's a lot of junk for big $$$

I caught a slight case of claustrophobia a few years back, and I still have relapses occasionally. LOL Combine that with the hot flashes (do they ever go away?) and I certainly don't want a hot mattress -- especially if it wraps around my face and I can't call for help! :yikes: I promised to tell you all about our mattress adventures today, but we got sidetracked by a furniture store grand opening, so the only mattresses we tried were the Simmons Beautyrest because that's the only brand they carried. Did you know that none of the Simmons mattresses can be flipped? They all have only one top side. Interestingly, the most comfortable mattress (to me) was also the cheapest. The salesman looked pretty disgusted with me and said it wasn't much better than sleeping on the floor. The more expensive mattresses got progressively softer. They all had a different thickness of pillowtop, but no pillowbottom. Don't people flip their mattresses anymore? What do you do when the mattress gets the, um, posterior indentation? :dontknow: Mint & Boomer, I haven't tried the SleepNumber yet. MMC, that's a good idea! Maybe I should just check out the SleepNumber at a Radisson? Meanwhile, I'll keep shopping and let you all know what I learn. Chels, did it call you in the morning? Peachie, Peachie, Peachie..... It's about the Mattress! ;) |
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
When I was shopping for a new mattress last year I was surprised that most of the mattresses I found could not be flipped. My new mattress can be rotated (head to foot) but not flipped.
My wife and I have vastly different ideas on how hard a mattress should be. I thought a sleep number bed would be good. We stayed overnight in a Radisson hotel for a few nights which had the sleep number bed. I selected 35 as a comfortable level for me, she selected a much firmer setting 65 to 70. I thought the bed was great but she hated it. Because of the difference in our settings she complained that she felt like she was about to fall off a cliff as she approached the center of the bed. If you like a very firm mattress, I'm not surprised that the cheapest mattress felt the best. Usually, more expensive mattresses add more springs and more padding. I wound up buying a bed that was firmer than I would like but softer than my wife would have preferred and it worked out good. |
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
No, none of the above, they all have issues. I have a sleep number in VA, and the problem is if one person likes it soft and the other likes it hard. I like 75 or 80 and Mrs l2 likes 30 or 35. So near the middle feels like rapids going over the falls. I am constantly struggling to keep from dropping off. In TV we have a top of the line sealy pillow top and that thing I feel like I am rolling off the edge onto the floor. Comfortable yes, flat no. When I lived in NH many many years ago, I went to Sunset mattress in I think the town was Ossipee and had them custom make a mattress. Still have it, but its only a double, most comfortable bed ever and its 40 years old. They just don't make them like they used to.

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Judy,
Before you decide, look at Sams. They have tremendous buying power and usually can get a pretty good deal on a pretty nice mattress. We have purchased two there in the last five years, not for our bed, but the sleepers aren't walking funny and they look bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning according to all reports. (Both were for daughters) |
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Wow! This is a tough one. Picking out a mattress is such a personal thing. Our bodies are all so different and each of us requires different firmness or softness for comfort. Another thing I find impossible to do is picking out a mattress in the time period your given to lay on it in the store. Those few minutes tell you absolutely nothing compared to a nights sleep on it. They all seem to feel great for the first few minutes.
I agree that price has nothing to do with it. I know people that have paid a huge price for theirs and hate them. Meanwhile bargain hunter me, paid very little at Beds, Beds, Beds on 441 in Leesburg and I must say this is the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on.But again it was just luck. Its is a Serta, perfect sleeper. Good to know they have an exchange policy before you buy just in case! This is the first time I can say, YES, I do love my mattress! |
Yep! Sleep Number, Without A Doubt
Sleep Number...hat's all that needs to be said.
|
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
I currently use a sleep number. Can anyone give me a phone # of a sleep number store near tv so I can order another to be delivered to our new home? There is nothing as easy on the joints and back as this mattress.
|
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
We also have a sleep number....we had a King size in NY they allowed us to go up and down....then we sold thinking it would not fit in our bedrrom in the villa....we then found a queen one for sale from someone here in TV's....the warantee does not follow us but it is only 3 years old and we only paid $450...can you imagine? check out craislist....
HOWEVER....I like to sleep with my head elevated a little and 3 pilloes just doesn't do it for me....the queen size does not go up and down.... If anyone has a King and would prefer a Queen....I would trade in an instant!!! Even pay a little extra!! Anyone???? |
Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
My queen has dual chambers and they do change with the valve. Sound like yours needs repair. The company is great, called them and told them the pump wasn't working. They mailed ups a new one immediately. This company has a wonderful service dept.

Just for your information and enlightenment and joy. Here is a little film clip of our gal Judy cavorting on her mattress. This was blatently stolen from another thread and the forever helpful Village07 is the one that found it.
