Schools in TV?????????
 

Why are there schools in TV? I there are people working for TV THAT HAVE FAMILIES, can’t these children attend regular county schools. I hate to mention this by as an age group we’re certainly not popping them out like biscuits. I’m really looking forward to getting away from teenagers and rug rats. I know a lot of you have grandchildren, but that’s different, they come and go.

So where would you like these kids that live in Oxford, Dallas, Pedro and the like go to school? They come from a district of which the Villages is part of.
Plus it's a great place to do mentoring if your a former teacher, athlete, musician,et al.

I wouldn't think you'd have any contact with the kids in the Village's schools unless you lived right by the schools. The kids don't live in the Villages.

Personally, I like to see kids once in awhile.

The only place I can think to live where there are no children has bars around your living space. I chose The Villages and the Villages Charter School.

Me too. I keep hearing from some seniors how awful kids are nowadays. That is NOT my experience at all.

LongTravel, you are right. TV is a place for ADULTS, if I want to be around children, teenagers, and all that noise; I will remain where I am. Why is it that always someone try to dictate their ways on others. When people move to TV is because they want what they see and they dont want it changed.

Just because they live in the area doesn't mean they get to go to the school.....

They are children of the employees that work FOR TV's....work for contractors of TV's or for the stores within TV's area....

Hard to get just any kid in there!!! Wish mine was there!!!!

It's not that I hate childdren; if cooked properly I find them tasty. There is even a wild rumor flying around I was one once. There's not much sense in me moving into TV if I'm still going to have to daily face teenagers who think it s fun to knock me down and steal my groceries. I can stay right where I am for that.

You're probably right, Lone Traveller, you wouldn't be happy in The Villages and you're better off where you are. If you're looking for an area that bans children and teenagers, you're barking up the wrong tree. They may cross you're path if you live in The Villages.

I understand that some people have had bad experiences with teenagers and they want to live in a place where they don't want to have to put up with the disrespect and the noise, but, honestly, I never see those kinds of kids around TV. I see a lot of grandkids and the wait staffs at our restaurants, but I don't see teenagers speeding down the streets or knocking down elderly people. If you want to live in a bubble that doesn't have schoolchildren in or around it, I'm sorry, but it doesn't exist. Where do you think we get all of the people who work in the many stores and restaurants we frequent? Personally, as a high school teacher for 35 years, I am going to miss seeing kids. There are an awful lot of good ones out there.

i think it may be hard for non villagers to realize that with the charter high school located on the outer boundary of the villages that we residents rarely see large groups of teenagers unless we visit the school to watch sports events or happen to be at the villages public library when school has just gotten out.
as with so many aspects of villages life it has to be experienced first hand to really be understood.
i would never tell anyone they wouldn't be happy living in tv just because they prefer not to live where unsupervised large groups of teenagers are an issue. that's really not the case here in tv.

I guess I was stunned, Cassie, to find out some people want no contact with children. My very elderly mother has such a great relationship with her grandchildren that it's difficult for me to fathom such intense dislike of our future generations. Of course, there are trouble makers occasionally. But there are also adult trouble makers that could move in next door. ::)

I understand!!! There are PITA's in every age bracket....guess I feel we have talked up the whole kid factor to death.....I feel like I have to defend it everytime I see something....but when you said what you said....welll...life was good again!!!! :super:

Lone Traveller... to answer your question, YES... the children of our employees can certainly go to other schools. Nothing is requiring them to go to our charter schools. But our charter schools were built to be 1st class, a small benefit offered to our employees who chose to raise better adults from the younger generation. But you won't see them walking our streets or getting in trouble. A lot of them work themselves in TV. Many of them clean up your tables when you go out to eat or perform other chores to make your lives here at TV more pleasent for the residents. And Efrahin, The Villages does not dictate... the charter schools have been here for years and is common knowledge to everybody that wants to move here. I suppose it is OK to not want to be around children. I suppose there are places that strictly forbid their existence... I would start looking for a place in Latvia... I understand they have the lowest birthrate in the world... only 7.8 per thousand. They have a bit of snow in the winter but their summers are beautiful.

Some of the biggest boosters of the Villages High School football team are TVers. Many TVers tutor at the schools. As a whole, I'd say the kids that go to TV charter schools are treasured -- not just by their parents and grandparents but by TV residents.

As a whole, these are great kids but they are kids. If you truly object that much, I'd say TV is really not the place for you. Some of the amenities here are even geared toward kids (family pool, playground, etc.). Kids are everywhere here. They're visiting grandparents. They're dancing in the squares. They're working in the restaurants. Most of them are pretty good kids. Occasionally, you get to see a brat.

A world with just adults would be boring. I do believe that having children around of all ages helps keep us young.

BTW -- If Latvia doesn't work for you, maybe you could try the Arctic Circle. I doubt there are many kids up there.

I have never heard of a teenager from the charter school knocking down anyone and stealing their groceries! I think they may help you bring them out to the car.....or golf cart....but that is pretty safe!

Get here quick...we would not want you to starve to death if they are stealing your food!

OH PEACHIE. YOU speak from my very soul. I am refreshed every time our granddaughter who leaves for college TOMORROW comes by and frequently comes by with her friends. I am SO lucky that she and her brother have lived in our town since their birth and I have been part of their lives and still involved in school doings and school politics. This week our little "farm" school district of 30 years ago, now one of the largest in Ohio, was given the very top status for quality in Ohio.

I find so much hope and so much joy in these kids and the children on our street.

One of the smartest thing TV ever did was set up the charter school system. It provides an employee benefit much better than run-of-the-mill day care. Employees realize their kids get a first-class education here, and lose the benefit if either the kids or the employee become a problem.

Keeping good employees is paramount for any business, and TV is no different. The additional bonus is at least one more school system where kids actually LEARN, demonstrate manners, and become more civilized members of society. Many of the kids have part-time jobs in TV as well, giving them growth potential economically and socially (they actually have manners!)

As additional bonus is that the charter school provides jobs for TV residents as well, an opportunity for young people to favorably interact with elders (spanning the generation gaps is important both ways!), and fun (VHS provides a great spectator sports venue).

I'm having a hard time finding a downside....

Steve! I agree!! I wish there was a way for my daughter to attend!! I wish TV's made it a benefit to buying one of their Bison Valley homes....I would have done it in a second!!!

It took some doing, but I think I have the downside -- it can be a pain to get into and use the library when school is out. Imagine that ... kids actually use the library after school and not all of them are waiting for rides!

There's a big difference between crossing paths with teenagers and having them knock you down on purpose. I've been knocked down in front of parents and had to listen to the parents laugh as hard as their kids

I also don't want to be driving down a cart path and have some kid jump out in front of me, trying to scare me and maybe have and accident, possibly hitting them

Again...I have never seen or heard of this anywhere....more or less here in TV's....sounds like where ever you live it is not so good....kids do not walk on the golf cart path....nor would they intentionally scare anyone....just not like that here!

Lone Traveller, you have my sympathy, that is despicable. But you didn't ask us about the general behavior of the children in The Villages. You indicated you would just as soon eat them, (jokingly I'm sure), and that you didn't want any children within view. I think the residents of The Villages have given you very good feedback and that if you are not totally anti-children and give them the respect they deserve, I'm not talking about thugs here, you will be very happy you moved to The Villages. My parents lived in a 55+ adults only community in St. Pete. The residents there were so anti-children it was scary. It was an "us against them" mentality. When my daughter and I visited the only greeting anyone ever said to us was, "How long is SHE staying? You know she can only be here a week!" Because of those kinds of experiences, I swore I would never live in a 55+ community. There's no way I could live in a community that banned children.
I went to stay with my mother for her final months. After she moved into the hospice I found myself going out to eat at the family restaurants, just so I could hear the sounds of children.

It was the presence of all the children that sold us on the Villages. When we visited the Villages was saw children dancing on the squares. We saw teenagers hanging around outside the movie theaters. We saw the Golden Girl cheerleaders at the Big Kazoo, the fundraiser for the Middle School. We were sold on the Villages when we saw the kids. We loved the idea that the schools were such an integral part of life in TV.

You're right, efrahain. We want what we saw when we visited, and we don't want it changed.

Russ. the place is Deer Creek Estates mobie home park in Stockbridge, GA. Yes stay away for your own safety. I'm stuck here for at least eight more months. Smart mouth kids, drunk parents, drugies, and assorted other unsavory people. After dark I don't go near the door unless I get a phone from whoever's coming calls first.

Just curious, Lone Traveler, if you've ever visited The Villages and experienced the environment/atmosphere for yourself....

Consider the possibility that although you live in an unsavory place, the rest of the world is not necessarily filled with "smart mouth kids, drunk parents [who are adults and are likely have much to do with the existence of the smart mouth kids], druggies, and assorted other unsavory people [whom I'm guessing may include adults too]."

I haven't been here long enough to have had the pleasure of much contact with the charter high school kids other than at TV Library, where it has never been anything but a pleasure to interact with them. As others have mentioned, I too would feel a hole in my life if I didn't have contact with kids. But that's me, and I'm not sitting in judgment of anyone else....

Haven't made my first trip to TV yet. I just gathering information to see if it is worth the trouble of making the trip. Aside from having to deal with the thugs in my nighborhood I've spent the last twenty years of my working career working with troubled youth that most of you wouldn't feel comfortable around. The only reason I've stayed in this job is transportation problem. People who drive have no idea how lucky they are. I just want to make sure I settle in a nice peaceful place.

LT, It's worth it, believe me! I also work with troubled and dangerous youths ( only 17 years to your 20!), but find it very rewarding when I can find one that I can make a difference in! You will not find the bad kids in TV. Just pick up a Daily Sun sometimes and you will see all the different ways the kids at the Charter school are helping out. This is not your "inner school"! ;D

If you really really object to having teenagers around, you might want to look at some of the fully gated communities in the Central Florida area. Some of them have easy golf cart access to the local markets. Communities to consider include On Top of The World and Stone Creek in Ocala, as well as a slew of other communities in Leesburg. But do yourself a favor and pay us a visit. I think you will conclude that this is a very safe place to live. I looked at the communities I mentioned and while all of them are very nice, The Villages was for me the best choice by far.

Keep things in perspective!
TV is 70,000 plus and needs thousands of professionals and skilled workers of all types. These people have kids and they want to live where their kids can thrive in school. As our realtor told us: "I could have gone anywhere to pursue my career, but I'm here, and I'll scrub toilets if I have to to keep my kids in the Villages charter schools."
It was brilliant to build the charter schools and they are a major calling card to attract and keep the service providers we can't live without. So welcome to all of those folks - you can even use our cart paths! We presently live in a pretty harmonious fashion and that's one of the best things about TV.
