Sky Show Tonight

SPECTACULAR CONJUNCTION:
When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look southwest. You'll see something very pretty: Venus and Jupiter beaming together through the twilight. For the directionally challenged, turn around from the direction you saw the shuttle launch and look a little toward your left.

The two closely-spaced planets are about to be joined by the slender crescent Moon for a spectacular three-way conjunction that arguably ranks as the best sky show of 2008. You should be able to see Jupiter, Venus, and the crescent Moon together on Monday evening. :coolsmiley:
Let's hope it's not cloudy.

Cassie325 11-29-2008 09:24 PM

UUJudy....these two planets have been out for about a week as we have been watching them....you are RIGHT....it is amazing!

While it was a little cloudy in TV's area tonight, as we left Orlando around 6:30 it was spectacular!! We saw the crescent moon just south-east of the two planets!!

I will try to get pictures on Monday as they move closer to the moon!!

Thanks for the reminder....is there an article that speaks to this....I thought I saw it somewhere....

Tonight's Sky Viewing

Should be a fun and interesting viewing. "Call those Grandkids!"

Amity and I are in Tucson, Arizona and we could see the planets last night in a brilliantly clear sky. It was most interesting.

tony 11-30-2008 09:36 AM

Are you kidding me? It is breath-taking!

Talk Host sounds like Spock: Very interesting, Captain, that the universe has formed into what you consider a wondrous sight, but it is all quite explainable.

Too funny Tony. :highfive: :a20:
Your comment begs the question...Did the three of you meet at a Trekky Convention?

I was the one wearing the propeller-head beany.

Live long and prosper. (I'm making the hand signal, you just can't see me). ;)

Sorry, this is a hijack, blame Tony, he's in charge!!

Tonight's the big night for this conjunction, which will not happen again until something like 2052.

Go out tonight just after dark and look southwest. The whole thing will be over by about 7:15 p.m. because the three of them will set then.

Here's an early picture from Australia sent to all astronomers a few minutes ago.

I've been watching for a couple of nights. It really is a lovely sight. Kind of iffy for us in TV tonight...clouds and maybe showers predicted. So thanks Tony for the pic.

tony 12-01-2008 04:15 PM

I expect that in my sky tonight up north here will be a blizzard. Maybe it will clear for a couple minutes. Uh huh.

Garden City, NY sky was spectacular.

Thanks all for the info, we probably would have missed it.

Cassie325 12-01-2008 09:46 PM

It was quite a sight tonight....BUT I guess my camera isn't as good as I thought it was!!! I will try again in the morning to find a better picture to post...but what a GREAT sight it was.....

cologal 12-01-2008 09:58 PM

It was fantastic in Colorado...the moon had just a few thin clouds which served to highlight the moon with reflected light.

As it got darker it only got better.

Here in Ashland in the Villages

Very very bright in a clear dark sky over my house...really neat. :coolsmiley:

Grandson

I emailed the site to my grandson. He called tonight to say that he'd seen it, and he was blown away. Thanks for posting about it, and, Tony, thanks for
the great pic.

It is upside down. In our sky the planets are on the bottom and the moon is different. I guess Australia really is opposite from us...they are upside down...or are we?

Anyway it was very cool (literally) to go outside to view this sky.

Rokinronda 12-02-2008 12:02 AM

Yes the planets were beneath the moon here. Beautiful clear night to see such a phenomena. Thanks, Tony......

tony 12-02-2008 07:10 AM

And how was it where I am? Let's just say the view of the conjunction was blocked by the clouds that brought me eight inches of snow this morning.

Talk Host 12-02-2008 06:49 PM

This tells you something about anyone who gets excited about two specks of light in the sky. Here in the southwest, where the sky is crystal clear, I can see millions of lights in the sky and they all look about the same to me. I hope some day to have as much celestial emotion as Tony so that I can be excited about one light more than another. At first I thought I was seeing two guys looking for nightcrawlers on the hillside. Now that I know what it really is, I can hardly contain myself.

tony 12-03-2008 06:14 AM

Night crawlers, for goodness sake!
