What is comfort food

I have seen "comfort food" mentioned here.

What in the world is that? Ice cream? Escargot? :yuck:

What?

Russ_Boston 01-21-2009 08:17 AM

Comfort food would be any high carb homestyle meal:

For example:
Meatloaf with mashed potatoes, biscuits and gravy.
Mac and cheese with breadcrumb topping.
Etc. Etc.

At least that's what I think of.

redwitch 01-21-2009 08:26 AM

To me, it's what my mom would fix when I was sick. So, beef stew, tomato soup, hot lemonade.

aln 01-21-2009 09:10 AM

Comfort food: different for everyone?

Mine is a CSO pizza from my favorite pizza parlor back in Milwaukee WI
:icon_hungry:

Boomer 01-21-2009 09:13 AM

I agree with Russ about those carbs -- pasta, potatoes, all that stuff. Often melted cheese and lots of butter involved. Soups and stews can qualify, too.

Comfort food can be for supper at home, especially in winter. Or comfort food can be for a celebration.

Take a look at a Paula Deen cookbook. I have said here on TOTV before that I live in fear of Paula Deen. I know that she is the only woman that Mr. Boomer would leave me for. He thinks Paula would cook that comfort food for him every day, 3 times a day. I just know if Paula Deen pointed one of her cooking utensils in Mr. Boomer's direction, he would be gone from me so fast. I live in fear. He keeps asking me if I want to take a road trip to Savannah. (Is that where Paula lives?)

I haven't watched Paula Deen's show for quite a while. But when I last watched it, she was always cooking that stuff for her husband who was getting fatter and fatter and redder and redder. But Mr. B. just sees how happy Mr. Paula looks when she serves him all that comfort food.

Sometimes comfort food might be ice cream. Or chocolate.

When things get a bit stressful, like when I get really worried about Mr. Boomer leaving me for Paula Deen, comfort food can be my drug of choice.

I think comfort food is a relative thing. To each, his (her) own.

Boomer

Comfort food is ravioli, meatballs. and M&Ms. Not at the same time though. M&M don't mix well in the sauce that you make for the ravioli.

Yes. I'm afraid it really is sauce.

Mexican food !

Normally, I eat very healthy food and frequent my favorite Thai restaurant a couple of times a week :coolsmiley:

But, when I crave C O M FO R T it's off to the best local Mexican restaurant for fish fajitas, blended margarita, with the sides of refried beans, guacomole, rice, salsa, cheese :pepper2:

On a recent visit to Vallejo California, there was a BBQ restaurant named Gracie's which had the best comfort food...... ate there 3 times in a row; babyback ribs, corn bread, greenbeans, melt-in-your-mouth bbq chicken and lite beer :pepper2:

Then back home to eat healthy again :ohdear:

Blondie 01-21-2009 04:36 PM

When I think of comfort foods, I think of all the delicious goodies my Grandmother used to make...

Zeppoli
Lasagna
Pizza Rustica
Rice Balls
Pizza (homemade)
Escarole Pies
Ham Puffs

Every Sunday after church, she would make me a huge fried hamburger with the meatball mixture on fresh, hot, Italian bread, loaded with fried onions and ketchup..OMG!

That hamburger sounds so yummy!!!

My grandmother fixed something for me when I was sick... Hot sweet tea with milk poured over toast in a bowl.

When I want something to take the sting out of life for me and my family, I fix one of their favorites; salmon patties with ketchup, peas and a baked potato. If it has been an awful day then the only cure is homemade tart cherry pie.

twynsmom 01-22-2009 07:13 AM

Graciegirl, my Mom used to fix me the same thing when I was sick, we called it Milk toast!
I had forgotten all about that..thanks for the memories..;)

njgranny 01-30-2009 12:29 PM

Comfort Food

I would say all of the above sound great. My mom used to make milk toast for my dad when he didn't feel well, but I don't ever remember eating it.

Our local diner makes the best mac and cheese. I like to have it with stewed tomatoes. It's in a heavy white sauce with cheese, and is so creamy and good.

Comfort food is anything that tastes good. By definition, it is almost always unhealthy. Oh well!

Comfort food is a gallon of rocky road icecream and a spoon.

espulmano 07-04-2010 12:15 PM

Gravy :)

RichieLion 07-04-2010 03:18 PM

Comfort food is almost anything that make you wistfully think of Mom.

Meatloaf, potatoes and gravy?, yes; Lasagna?, yes; but for me especially it's tripe soup with crusty bread.

Pturner 07-04-2010 07:03 PM

When I was a kid, my favorite comfort foods were homemade Toll House cookies-- regular, frozen or the dough-- or vanilla wafers topped with peanut butter. Did anyone else put peanut butter on vanilla wafers?

Now, soft, hot breads. Ice cream. Dark chocolate. Comfort meal -that's italian. Comfort drink-- red, red wine. Or a frozen concotion.

Comfort holiday-- Well this is one of them. :a040:

Yes, anything that someone else prepares, sets in front of me, and cleans up afterward. That's comfort food to me! ;)

barb1191 07-04-2010 09:20 PM

No way.....

I saw a picture of Mr & Mrs Boomer dancing at a wedding they attended and believe me, there's no way that Paula Dean could ever lure Mr Boomer away from the lovely Mrs Boomer; no, not even if Mrs Boomer doesn't have that Southern accent and staff of chefs that PD has. Just will never happen.

Boomer, me thinks thou protesth......real drama fer shure y'all....

Just foolin' wit ya girlfriend; you're the best and Mr B knows it too.

Hugs, barb aka Skuppy Garfield

Oh yes, on topic: "comfort food" ......yum yum to it all.:BigApplause:

About a year ago I was with some friends at family-owned gift shop/ restaurant near Atlanta that served fabulous corn chowder. My friend Barbara said she had an excellent recipe for corn chowder. I said, "Me too. Come here. Order it." :)

uujudy 07-06-2010 11:02 PM

Hahaha! PTurner, that's my kind of home cooking. :icon_hungry:
What a great response! May I use that? People are always telling me about their great recipes, but my fridge is stocked with 'to go' boxes.. I mean seriously, with so many wonderful restaurants here, we eat at home about once a week so we can clear all the boxes out of the fridge.

Pturner 07-07-2010 02:36 PM

UU, sure "u" can! Glad it brought a chuckle.

marybb 03-20-2011 03:17 PM

My dad was the cook in my family, would make wonderful Sunday dinners. On cold winter days after playing in the snow, a bowl of chicken soup, or a stew would be waiting for us , always warmed us up and just hit the spot.

Mine is definitely chocolate marshmallow ice cream with warm chocolate syrup. Ymmmm....... :)

nitakk 03-21-2011 01:13 PM

Comfort food to me is those special meals Mom made so well - back when "from scratch" was all there was. Since she was from Mississippi, it was southern fried chicken, fried halfway, then add water to steam it with the lid on. Turn the heat back up, lid off and fry to golden brown - it was the moistest chicken you ever had. Make some mashed potatoes with chicken gravy and homemade cornbread that melts in your mouth like it was the lightest cake. If this thread doesn't make us all miss our moms, I guess you didn't like yours very much!

jebartle:

Take heart jebartle. With your numbers significantly down and hoping they stay there, I wouldn't be surprised if your doctor said you could cheat a little somewhere down the road.

As a type 2 diabetic myself, I'll join you in having a drool puddle. LOL

K9-Lovers 03-21-2011 03:03 PM

Nah, you diabetic droolers have got the wrong take on things. After you've changed your way of eating for a year or so like me, you will gag on the thought of sugary foods laden with fat. Ahhgg. Try some of those recipes I posted, they taste fantastic!
