Dump smell

I imagine this has come up on here before but I did a search and couldn't find any posts. Is the horrendous stench from the dump over by Colony going to ever be addressed by TV? Is there even anything that can be done? I would be furious if I bought over in Pine Ridge during a non-stink season and then had to endure that odor now. I'm sure the folks over in Sanibel smell it as well not to mention the poor folks that bought all those villas over by Walmart. I pass by there everyday and it's been particularly putrid over the past couple of months.

Is it on Villages owned property ?

njbchbum 09-21-2017 06:04 PM

Does it belong to the Villages?

asianthree 09-21-2017 06:58 PM

It's construction debris and yes it's on villages property, there are actually several threads about it.

fred53 09-21-2017 07:05 PM

There is no dump per se...it is rotting vegetation. All around Florida where trees/bushes/shrubs were torn from the ground have the same smell...get over it....

kstew43 09-21-2017 07:45 PM

It does have a rather bad odor...what ever or who ever own's it.

when you travel from hillsboro in the golf cart, to lake deaton plaza, (China Gourmet....general tso's shrimp, the best ever...... the bad smell is very strong......but last only a mile or so, then it dissappears and reappears on the way home. We don't notice it sitting out on the deck in barrineau.

Must be the wind direction....but it is definitely noticeable around 6 when I make a supper run.

Could be the China Gourmet? :a040:

It's a landfill. If you google TV you will see it off Moyer. Heat and excess moisture is causing the smell. Complaints last summer resulted in a decrease in the smell (perhaps more land was dug up and over the piles of decay).

I don't believe that is the case.

"Mt. Morse" was well discussed several years ago when the Developer bought the whole dairy farm except the operating dump area. (who really wants to know what has been buried there over the years?); then turned the lemon into lemonade by building golf courses on the sides of the dump, planting pine trees around the top, and selling it as golf front property (which it is). In those days there weren't a whole lot of sales people who would voluntarily fess up as to what the "Pine Ridge" up in the slopes, in the "distance", really was. As for continued operations, the permit was recently renewed for several years into the future.
If you like the smell now, wait until the cool foggy November, February and March mornings after we've had several days of rainy weather. All that rotting "vegetation", those sulfides in the dumped drywall and construction debris, and the little bit of garbage that gets thrown into the construction dumpsters; sometimes they can't cover it over with dirt fast enough.
Rumor has it that Mt. Morse will be the base of operations for The Villages Astronomy Club when it is eventually capped over.
Hopefully the base ground layer was well constructed of clay and an adequate drainage system built so that the dump doesn't become a future polluter of our well water and that they are building a gas collector system to capture all the methane and other gasses created by the decomposing mound of debris. .
So all in all, yes, we have a dump in the middle of The Villages.

Thanks for the info Jim. I knew it was a dump because I see the dump trucks going in there all the time. TV has done a good job of visually hiding it but they can't hide that stench! I truly feel sorry for the folks who just bought over in there.

Come over by the Sarasota Golf Range or the new Walmart they're building by Colony at any time of the day and I guarantee it's a smell much worse than the one you're smelling.

Thanks Kazmi. Watching all those dump trucks heading in there I had envisioned something like this up there. I guess they have to put it somewhere but I'm pretty sure TV aren't selling any homes around there right now and I sure hope they mentioned it to all the people who have already bought their homes.

Dump smell

At first I thought the smell was the irrigation that's been going on since Irma. Seems like the dump is back in conversation.
This was covered about a year and a half ago.
If I recall many calls to the developer who at first denied, then admitted the odor was from the dump at that time took action.

The odorous dump has been discussed on TOTV many times.

Does someone have a more precise location of the dump? Thanks.

Where is this dump exactly? Is it visible from Colony or the new Neighborhood Walmart? I've certainly smelled the offensive stench and wondered where the heck it was coming from the past few months.

Read my link in the post just prior. Number 20. It tells you what executive courses it is located next to.

Here's an aerial photo taken by 'twoplanekid' back in post #10. If you were in the new Walmart parking lot and were looking south at Moyer Loop and then got into a crane and went up about 500', this is what you would see. From the surface it is mostly hidden by hillsides on all sides and tress planted along the edge of the hill. Executive golf courses surround it on all four sides.

China Gourmet on Colony Blvd

The current score from the health department is 64 - out of 100. And a letter grade of U. I counted 15 violations. 4 were intermediate, and 3 high priority.

You might want to have an ER physician accompany you next time you go.

The developer did not purchase the “whole”dairy farm. He purchased some of the acreage left to the 1st Baptist Church of Leesburg in the will of the woman who owned the dairy farm. A second piece, retained by the Baptist Church, is going to be the site of a new church campus.

I don’t believe the developer owns the landfill. It is owned by Hewitt Contracting. Owner/officer info is noted below:

Key People Who owns Hewitt Contracting Company, Inc.
Name
Howard H. Hewitt 21
~ Background Report ~
President Secretary Director Treasurer
Sarah L. Hewitt 3
~ Background Report ~
Director Vice President
Harry W. Hawes 9
~ Background Report ~
Treasurer
Excel
Known Addresses for Hewitt Contracting Company, Inc.
PO Box 490697 Leesburg, FL 34749
3839 County Road 48 Okahumpka, FL 34762
3839 County Road 48P Leesburg, FL 34749

Hewitt also owns other similar sites in central FL.

No sense letting the developer take blame for something. A little research goes a long way.

having lived here for 11 years I can tell you bad smells show themselves here from time to time and from a number of sources

After nearly 2 solid months of a very strong sewage smell, there was no odor today! I just posted this tread yesterday...TV works fast!!

DBussone said it wasn't owned by The Villages.

No one uses their turn signals or reads prior posts and MANY are worried about some palm fronds.

In every life some rain must fall. THE CUP is more than half full I say.

I was kidding about TV working fast, not bashing them. I do read prior posts and I'm pretty sure if that dump was in your neck of the woods you'd be concerned about a few palm fronds too.

Good decision. Current score is 91. Or “A”

While we are speaking about bad odors does anyone know where the burning is going on of the tree debris that are being collected from The Villages?

When we were looking at houses our rep steered us away from the area. That was our second house in 2012. So glad he did

This has come up before. It is not rotting vegetation. It is construction debris in a dump. It's why one of the golf courses off Morse south of 466A has no homes built along it--there is a construction trash dump on the other side. Do a search on here, and you will find threads and posts. Drywall, for one, smells like rotting garbage as it disintegrates. There have been times when you could smell it from Colony all the way down to Pine Ridge.

It's not a "get over it" issue. And it's not fertilizer, milorganite, or anything being put on the golf courses... nothing has been put on the golf courses since Irma, and the smell is pretty bad right now.

Wiotte 09-22-2017 09:26 PM

It smells like sewer gas.
