CenturyLink and Talk of The Villages

Apparently not all CenturyLink customers have trouble logging on to Talk of the Villages. I have CenturyLink and am having no trouble logging on, accessing links, etc. Just sayin'...

askcarl 04-19-2018 12:49 PM

CenturyLink here. Obviously NO problems.

bhallam 04-19-2018 12:56 PM

I have had issues with Centurylink DNS. Have to reboot my router sometimes twice a week; the dNS service gets reestaablished and then the problem goes away for a while.

jtdraig 04-19-2018 01:05 PM

Century Link

I can't access TOTV with by clicking a link in email but I can by directly inputting the website into the address bar...after that, it is a normal connection.

same here

Easy fix for this, change your DNS settings for your network adapter to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as an alternate. These are the Google hosted DNS servers. Once you make the change the problems go away.

Everyone that has CenturyLink should be using the same DNS servers so I would think that the problem has more to do with the router that needs to be reset several times a week.

I have been having trouble accessing TOTV with Spectrum the last several days. Often can't find the site. Sometimes it will lose the link when following a thread. Can get back in after several attempts. I have rebooted the modem and router.

Mine either. It is always useful to know the history of your provider. Unlike the cable companies, CenturyLink is a legacy landline phone company. In most of The Villages, they have now installed optic cable, approximately the same technology as the cable companies use. That is what I have at super high speed - the fastest I have ever had including my Wisconsin state government network on the internet's backbone at UW-Madison. Twisted pair copper wire is no longer available in the Village of Woodbury. Perhaps that newer technology meets the needs of TOTV's server, while the older twisted pair needs a modem tweak.

TOTV Team 04-19-2018 02:02 PM

CenturyLink admits it was an issue they are having and their only solution was for any customer that has an issue to call into CenturyLink customer service and they would have to have their customer reconfigure their router.

But many users have thought our site was down and it wasn't.

We wish we could do more to help those customers who have been trying to access TOTV and haven't. Glad to hear at least some CL customers are able to get on. I wonder if it is owned vs leased routers?

Regards,

bhallam 04-19-2018 02:39 PM

done that but still occasionally have a dns problem. i do suspect the router they gave me when I gave up prism is not the greatest. Due for a price increase from CL this month and will be switching to (ugh) Xfinity. Fastest speed I can get from CL is 25 Mbs in my neighborhood (St. Charles) due to copper.

TOTV Team 04-19-2018 03:02 PM

Sorry to hear that but we have had no issues with xfinity and their speeds were the best we could find but do your own research and good luck!

We did this reluctantly because of our experience with them up north but we have found that they are much better now and we were happy we switched.

Nucky 04-19-2018 04:39 PM

FW102807, how long have you been back with Comcast?

Since last fall. We swore we never would but the only other option we had was CL over DSL and it was beyond awful. We only have it for internet access and phone.

Is ultrasurf.com a safe site to use until CL fixes the problem?

John_W 04-19-2018 05:01 PM

I have Century Link without a modem, we have fiber optic, but I use a Liskys 1200 Router because the CL jack is in the kitchen and for our smart TV. Last week when I would click on TOTV in my favorites the site would not come up until I refreshed the page 2 or 3 times and then it would appear. Once I was on the site, if I clicked on a thread, it would not come up until I refreshed that page a couple of times. Since about Monday it has been working normal.

I really appreciate your answer and am also interested in the Xfinity Cell service. Has that been working well for you? Do you need a "Booster" in your home for great cell reception?

I can't believe I'm considering this after the beating we got up north but I trust what you are saying greatly.

We do not have the cell service. We still have a land line.

I think you have something there Tomwed. Ultrasurf got me to the front page of TOTV's when CL wouldn't allow that. The only problem with ultra soft was it kept popping up even when I didn't want to see it. It's always something, correct?

I'm better off making Tamales and Tacos then troubleshooting computer problems. I will no longer accept help from certain people on technical services. I'm not racist its just I cant understand them and they make believe they understand me. So its a mess. I've been told I speak with a NY/NJ flair. :rant-rave: :pepper2: I don't know what their talking about, Fugetaboutit.

Did you try flushing the DNS?

??? Sorry I do not understand. What is a shame?

JC and John 04-19-2018 06:07 PM

I occasionally have problems getting on TOTV. We own our router and have the fiber optic line from CL and I use Safari to access TOTV. We have to unplug everything on occasion to reboot the whole system in order to get the internet speed we are paying for which is a pain as it knocks out everything including our MCell AT&T cell phone booster. There is no way I will call CL and have them reconfigure my personal router. CL either gets it act together or we will take our internet business elsewhere.

Chatbrat 04-20-2018 03:49 AM

We configure our router, also fixed "youtube" on our smart TV

All this technology is great but really tests your nerves when it is one problem after another. The shame is the wasted time and now the disconnection of one company and the rules and now a contract. It is terrible. I hope Comcast doesn't let us down. Thanks for the advice.

Did you already switch companies?

Thanks for clarifying. Yes technology can be a pain when it doesn't work right. I do hope you like Comcast. We were very pleasantly surprised, especially when we had service recently. Two days after the techs left a supervisor stopped by to check that everything was ok. They were polite on time and fixed our issue.

Planned on going to the store today but me wife :cus: snagged the car. Maybe later.

tomwed 04-20-2018 08:53 AM

Are you switching from CL because sometimes you can't get on TOTV? try ultrasurf.com search for TOTV. It uses a different server then CL uses. So it works until CL does something. Then stop using ultrasurf.com---use your chromebook.

I have had CL for a while and this is a new problem that will pass.

I gave it a shot last time and it got me to the opening page of TOTV and the Nothing more. Ooops. I think I'm going to wait until the middle of May and then decide. Other than this CL has been good. I just wanna get on the computer and use it not talk about it. Geez. :evil6:

Do you have an all in one modem, router combo or an independent router.

All in one from Century Linkster. I bought it day 1 no lease.

queasy27 04-20-2018 09:51 AM

CL customer -- I've only been able to connect to TOTV through VPN on Opera for a month or so, but the problem fixed itself this week and I can now connect normally with all browsers.

mariad 04-21-2018 10:16 AM

Some one come clean on TOTV accessibility-be it CL or TOTV!! On one macbook, I changed to public DNS with 8's and access is good. On the other macbook I left the DNS as was and using Network Utility, did a Trace Route on TOTV IP address and saw it knocked CL out after step 5.
So looks like it's a TOTV problem?

More like CL problem. Google DNS is getting you there CL DNS is failing.

Yet disabling the Wifi on my smartphone gets me connected every time.

I have tried Safari, Opera, Google Chrome & FireFox on IMac.

I have tried Opera, Google Chrome, Bing, IE, Firefox on Windows 10 with no luck.

I also tried the one on Tomwed suggested the other day on each computer.

I also took my laptop with Windows 10 to my next door neighbor and signed into their Wifi and TOTV'S was accessed thru each above-mentioned surf engine with Comcast. I'm not changing numbers on my computer or router, respectfully said in regard to those that know how. Let them fix the damn thing. If I technically misspoke about anything please excuse me. Fixing computer problems is normally not my thing, thankfully.
