Traffic speeds ever increasing!!

Once upon a time one would see speed traps set up in various locations around TV.
This past year it has been very obvious there have been significantly fewer/none.
As a result the speeds on the roadways have continued to increase....in many areas by more than 10 mph.

I have maintained in the past and still maintain there should be a separate unit of law enforcement that does nothing but enforce traffic laws. The unit(s) would be self funding via ticket revenues.

We all know enforcement works. School zones....our favorite little towns notorious for notorious speed traps, etc.

Why?

ENFORCEMENT!! Very lacking throughout TV.

The traffic violations and numerous (per day) accidents/near misses are the single most negative aspect of TV life style. NO ENFORCEMENT!

In the past week I have seen Sumter County Deputies working radar on Morse, Buena Vista, and from a postal station lot on Woodridge Drive. Just because you don't see them, it doesn't mean they aren't out there.

No inference to whether they are "out there" or not.
The point is there is significantly less traffic enforcement than in the past. And there should be many, MANY more traps!
In my humble opinion.

I agree with you. In the past 5 years we've lived here I've seen a big difference in LEO prescence here in the villages and ever increasing speeding.

My point simply being I've personally observed three "traps" in a 7 day period. Seems like a good amount to me.

If you are speaking of the speed traps Waldo used to have, I am sure you know they disbanded the police force there altogether after the state started an investigation into the number of tickets they were handing out (12000 a year).

I agree, the speed limits are just being ignored especially in golf carts. Would someone please set a trap on Bailey Trail and pull over golf carts. We have a speedometer and we do 20. The governor will kick in and slow us down at 20.8 on a downhill and we're lucky to get 19 uphill near Cane Garden. Carts are going past us like we're sitting still. No turn signals are being used or if they are, are not being shut off so you don't know if they're going to turn or not. We have seen several close calls at intersections and carts making turns on 2 wheels. Slow down folks! Nothing is that important to put lives in danger. The carts are not toys.

I am fed up with the high speeds on Powell Rd between 44a and 466a. The limit is 35 mph but most all traffic goes 50-55mph. Trucks are the worst offenders. Complaints to the city and county have done nothing.

I see the radar units set up on that section of Powell on a regular basis, that is one area where I set my cruise at 37 as I know they're watching it. I would say I see at least one if not more radar cars every day, not so much on Morse, I don't know that I ever saw one on Morse, but on the other roads I travel. People that go too fast will eventually get caught or get in an accident, hopefully one that does not cause injuries. It's like that everywhere. I would also like to mention that people going 25 in a 45 MPH zone are just as dangerous as those going 55.

Topspinmo 04-27-2018 12:52 PM

Be careful what you wish for? Usually the baddest offenders escape. 35 mph speed limit on portions of BV and 'MB BS anyway. Set so the LSVs can speed 30 to 40 MPH Down them. Few go 35 down BV and portions of MB. I got passed by cart in golf cart lane on BT in my car and I was going 30MPH with line behind me. IMO any looping trail you see this same thing, speeding. What we need are some more motorcycle cops. What do the got 2? Also need meter maids around the square ticket all the illegal parking, traffic violations, and drunks. Then, they can move on to diamond lane illegal parked cars, outrageous golf cart speeders.

dillywho 04-27-2018 01:21 PM

Unfortunately, when they do write speeding citations, so many get on here complaining as to "why they are not out there catching 'real' criminals". No win situation for them. Anyone in that big of a hurry just needs to leave earlier or not schedule every activity for the same day.

Fredster 04-27-2018 02:44 PM

I’m up north now, and lots of people
speed around here to!
I wonder sometimes if the traffic is too fast,
or I’m slowing down! Just a thought.

asianthree 04-27-2018 06:33 PM

LEO could sit on any street at 6am and ticket at least 40 lawn companies and biggest offender the garage trucks

Pinellas Place has so many golf carts doing 30+ that
it is now more the norm.

biker1 04-28-2018 05:39 AM

I drive along there all the time and there are a lot of carts doing 20-25. 30+ the norm? No.

The last quarter of 2017, over 1,100 speeding violations were issued in The Villages.

Agree.

20-25 common. 30+ not at all. In fact, from my experience 30+ is rare.

We purchased our first home in Village of Charlotte in 2012. There were 20MPH speed signs on every street. Still people speeded on golf carts and in cars. Contractor trucks pulling trailers were the worst. We moved to La Belle North almost two years ago. There are NO speed limit signs on our neighborhood streets. There are signs on Moyer Loop. I called Sumter County several months ago and they said that a survey was done and TV did not feel 20 MPH speed limit signs were necessary since they had one at each entrance. We have golf carts and cars and contractor trucks going up to 35 MPH on the neighborhood streets. If people speed when there are posted speed limit signs then what do we think they will do with no speed limit signs? I would say there are very few new residents in any of the new villages that know the max speed on streets with homes is 20MPH!

spring_chicken 04-28-2018 12:58 PM

BREAKING NEWS: People in The Villages break traffic laws. As do millions of people on every county, state, and federal road in the United States millions of times per day.

Max speed on Villa streets is 10mph. Never see a car go that slow

Chatbrat 04-28-2018 01:25 PM

In Fl you can only get a speeding ticket for car/truck when you exceed the speed limit by more than 5 mph--a golf car going more than 20 mph, the ticket is not for speeding--its for having an unregistered vehicle+ a bunch of other items

ColdNoMore 04-28-2018 01:27 PM

I thought the max speeds in our 'faux gated' neighborhoods...was 25 mph.

Albeit...usually in the left lane.

I'd rather see tickets given out to drivers who disregard the rules in roundabouts. I'd be willing to bet there are more accidents and near misses due to people cutting in front of others illegally from the wrong lane, than from people going 5 or 10 mph over the speed limit. I was going straight the other day and someone did a right turn from the left lane, in front of me, and I barely slammed my brakes on in time. What is the matter with people? Are they that stupid they don't know the rules, or are they just inconsiderate or in la la land?

Actually, the signs at the entrances from Lake and Marion counties indicate the limit, unless otherwise posted, within TV is 20. That’s likely why they no longer put the signs on many individual streets.

Was this at a roundabout? If so, it sounds like you were the one making a mistake. People making a left turn at a roundabout do exit the roundabout from the left lane. Traffic approaching the roundabout must yield.

GoodLife 04-28-2018 04:05 PM

My advice, move to Nancy Lopez area, north of 466, we don't have traffic problems here.

I guess no one had told you that it is OK to turn right from the left lane in a roundabout.

Well anyway, you seem to have learned the lesson on your own. If you are in the right lane, you should always expect the person in the left lane to turn right in front of you. It happens to me all the time.

No sense in trying to explain it to you. R/b traffic moves in a counter-clockwise direction. When you enter a r/b you are making continuous right turns to exit the r/b. Check the signage if you care too

Here is the pamphlet provided by Sumter County.
http://www.districtgov.org/community...t-02-08-12.pdf

It explains that if you are going half way around, you have the choice of entering into the outside lane and exiting via the outside lane, OR entering ino the inside lane and exiting via the inside lane.

If you are going 3/4 the way around, you must enter from the inside lane and exit from the inside lane.

NEVER CHANGE LANES IN THE TRAFFIC CIRCLE.

ALL TRAFFIC entering into the traffic circles must YIELD to BOTH lanes inside the traffic circle.

Some people refer to a traffic circle as an intersection.

Thus the 1st exit is the same as making a right hand turn and you would be in the right lane to do so.

The 2nd exit is the same as going straight and continuing on the same road way. Thus if you have 2 lanes, both could go straight with each lane exiting from the same lane in which they entered.

The 3rd exit is the same as making a left turn. So you would need to enter in the inside lane, just as you would at a regular intersection. You would also exit from the inside lane. You never change lanes while inside a traffic circle.

ALL ENTERING TRAFFIC HAVE A YIELD SIGN and MUST YIELD TO ALL CARS THAT ARE ALREADY IN THE TRAFFIC CIRCLE.

This explains how a person makes a left hand turn inside a traffic circle. (It is by using the 3rd exit from which you entered the circle)

So, yes, YOU ARE CORRECT about continuous right turns, It is just that you need to enter AND exit in the proper lane according to the exit you plan to use.
