Recommendations for enclosing lanai

We are going to enclose our lanai with glass and are getting several estimates. I just wondered if anyone had companies that they would specially either recommend or warn to stay away from. If possible, I'd like to support local Village contractors.
Thanks

Suzie

I just sent you a PM with the name/number of our general contractor, a former Village building supervisor, who is enclosing our lanai in Glass and making it part of our family room by taking out the sliding glass doors and adding heat/ac, crown moulding, tile floors, built in nook etc. He is also building a separate (CBS) hobby room accessible from both the master bedroom and new extended family room. We are probably 80% complete. Cold weather really held up the project because they had to take the SGDs down and as you know the weather was not very cooperative.

T&D Concrete, the major pool and birdcage builders in TV also will do this job. I have no connection to this company except that the huge project they did for us was fantastic and affordable. Really good company to deal with.

duffysmom 03-26-2010 05:23 PM

Suzie, we had a great experience using White's Aluminum. They have enclosed many of my neighbors lanai's with glass and not one complaint. Also, we had a ton of rain this Winter and we were dry and comfy on our lanai. The price was right too.:a040:

D & D does excellent work. We had them do our enclosure and tile work. Very happy with results,.

CTgolfer 03-27-2010 02:21 PM

Melton Construction enclosed our lanai... great job. Ask to speak with Darryl Melton.

We just had our lanai enclosed with glass doors. We have a bird cage over the pool but I wanted to be able to use lanai all year long. We contracted with Custom Windows and Exterior Designs (they also own Old World Pavers). They did an excellent job and only took 3 days. They were the only contractors who would do floor to ceiling glass doors with four tracks. They can show you pictures of work they have done. We are extremely pleased and I love our enclosed lanai. Some other contractors wanted to do vinyl doors and would take too long.

mfp509 04-05-2010 08:03 AM

Has anyone had any experience with Insulco or Jason Boutwell for enclosing the lanai with glass or making it into a Florida room?

Hi Susie,
We just had our lanai enclosed using White Aluminum. I would not recommend them. I used them since they were so highly touted here and after getting several bids from various contractors. I also checked them out with the Better Business bureau. All looked good. They were not the most or least expensive but on the lower end side. However, the job went on forever and hindsight being 20/20, I would have gladly paid more for less agravation and stress.

Is it possible to get their number. We are purchasing a Gardenia with a summer kitchen and want Glass from floor to ceiling without those little cross bars. We are on golf course and would like an unobstructed view. Barb

Enclosing lanai

Barb,

Here is the number for Custom Windows. The sales rep is Dave Broberg. Our lanai looks beautiful with floor to ceiling glass doors. The doors have four tracks so they are like pocket doors. They do not stack as other doors do. Dave has pictures of different homes in TV they have done. This was one of the best investments we have made.

Lanai Glass Enclosure

Anyone have any experience with using Hill's seamless gutters doing a lanai window install?

kfierle 07-21-2010 03:10 PM

My sister used Hills for her lanai and was very pleased.

We placed the cross bars near the bottom and used about 5 1/2' glass on the top, 18' glass on the bottom. We did sliding doors 8' x 8' (2 - 4 x 8 panels) and that made them quite expensive. (I think 80" high is normal but we added a big bird cage and wanted an open view in that direction.) We were quite pleased with the finished job but had some issues with the contractor - who is now out of business.

Magellan Construction or Kilcrease Construction

Has anyone used either of these businesses? We are looking also to enclose our lanai also and would love your opinion on these two companies.

I Also Used White

Aluminum based on the stellar reviews I read on TOTV, and would not use them again. I had to call them back several times to fix things , and while they were less expensive than others, I am still not completely satisfied with the quality of their work.

Could I trouble you for this contact information as well

Thanks....Tom

We live in a stucco courtyard villa that backs to a wall. We want to enclose our lanai with a knee high wall and low-e glass. Not sure if we want to run A/C since its use will be during fall/winter/and spring. Just a simple heater during the cold winter nights. I read here and heard that some recommend to use T & D Concrete. I know they do birdcages as we planned to use them for that but enclosures, seems a bit odd.

Any others to recommend would be helpful.

azoblue 11-06-2010 10:21 PM

Melton Construction

I would also recommend Melton. Great job at a reasonable price.

We've used Whites Aluminum for glassing in a lanai and building two birdcages. They're not perfect, but so far they've returned to remedy any problems (small things like not enough caulking).

They were prompt about obtaining building permits and completed the work on the promised dates.

This was also our experience with White Aluminum. Based on the recommendations on TOTV and also checking out several of the jobs they did we had them enclose our lanai with low e-glass and add a large birdcage. There were several items that needed to be corrected and it took much longer than they had estimated.

We are very satisfied with the finished product but would not recommend White Aluminum. The job should have been done right to begin with and not require having to contact the president of the company to get it done correctly.

With all the rains we've been having, I've been finding many worms on the floor in our birdcage. Obviously we need more caulking. The birdcage was added last February. It will be very interesting to see how they react to my request for a correction.

Hi Susie, I am looking for someone to add on a closed lani to our villa. Can you give me the contractors name you used. Thank You in advance brucedi

I seen work by Elite design they are on 301..omg there design is breathtaking I can see a job and know its theirs. The length and width of windows used makes it so unique and to me so worth doing an improvement, and for resale go big or stay the same. I believe they do not sub out, which is huge.

I am working with this same contractor now and so far am very happy. I did contact TV and asked for a recommendation which they gladly gave me. They said he left TV on good terms because he wanted to start his own business...exactly what he told me.

I will update when my project is finished.

Would you please send me the name and number of the PM, as we are looking to enclose our lanai with glass sliders.

villages07 07-02-2012 10:03 PM

We had White's Aluminum enclose our lanai with low e-glass sliders. They had the best price of the 4 estimates we got and they did a good job. We are very happy with the end result.

dally1932 07-07-2012 09:04 AM

We used T&D 18 months ago to inclose our Lanai. They were excellent, however they were not the cheapest. Based on recommendations and references we went with them even though they were a little higher. Very professional, courteous and there subcontractors all worked as a precision team. We always knew who to expect, what would be done that week, and when the inspector would be there to inspect the progress. We are now looking to add a golfcart garage and we are obtaining four bids, one which will be T&D.

Custom Windows in Leesburg has the full length glass sliders that stack so you lose very little open air. Go 466A to 441 south, take left at Hess gas station and they are on the right. Go to their showroom to see what is available.

T & D does Excellent Work

We also had our lanai enclosed by T & D, the Company that does all the work for the Villages. Very professional and we love our enclosed lanai. They did a fantastic job with no complaints. Very professional company. I would highly recommend them.

We had many problems with White Aluminum. Several leaks, dented metal, windows that were hard to operate and could not get them to return phone calls. We signed contract on 12/28/12. They completed job on 4/29/13. Told us it would take 6 weeks!:rant-rave:

We are looking for slider but also want screens.. Anyone have these?

raynan 05-16-2013 10:20 PM

Last Monday our lanai was enclosed with floor to ceiling, light tinted sliding glass doors and a full view glass door. We are thrilled. The screen is on the outside and we got the heavier sun shade screen which really cuts the heat on our west-facing lanai. The work was done by Custom Windows and Enclosures of Leesburg. They don't remove your current screening until they arrive with the material to do your job. They enclosed our lanai in 5 hours.
Nice job, clean and neat.
