Fake food has to go!
Recently, my grandkids sent me a phone letter saying that they don't want burgers no more, but these things that look like steak but are made from trees! They say these are much better for you because nobody gets killed in the process!
I tried one of these "burgers", and they taste like crap! I don't know why Taylor and Hunter like this junk! I think they switched from real food to the phony kind is because their phones told them to do this! Has anyone out there tried these fake foods? Did you like them or do you agree they taste like s#it? And do your grandkids also eat this junk, or are they smart enough to eat what's real? |
I remember Tang. Diet sodas which are extremely bad for people for numerous reasons I avoid like the plague. Cheap fake sugar sweetener made from corn is difficult to avoid but I try. My mother served oleo (gag!); I stick with real butter.
Fake meat is not for me. These kids are propagandized in school by radicals from outfits like PETA the schools let in to not eat real meat. |
tofu, kale .now this.. give me a break .. or better yet, a steak
|
I haven't the slightest idea of what you're talking about. You seem angry about some fake burgers. Who are Taylor & Hunter? So many questions, so little time.
|
I agree with the OP. I have tried every low calorie pizza, fake ice cream, low fat cheese, fake burgers, etc. and none of them are worth eating. Eat the real thing in moderation, and enjoy.

They are suggesting vegan food for cats here, but the cats aren’t going for it.

Vegan for Kitties? No Way!

Whomever it is that is suggesting vegan food for cats doesn't know what they are talking about. That person obviously has no clue! |

I slip it meat whenever I visit. She can't understand why the dog is so friendly toward me. The neighbor spotted me doing it once, but said "It's OK, I have been slipping the dog meat leftovers for ages!" |
Life is too short for fake food.

They say coconut oil is the best thing to go with kale, it makes it much easier to slide off the plate into the trash
|
Our youth has been brainwashed to blindly accept things labeled by certain buzzwords such as echo, green, sustainable, enviro friendly, etc... And God forbid they avoid anything that "empowers" them, whatever that means? Just label something with the appropriate buzzword and it is like mosquitos flying straight into the bug zapper.

The tale of the egg
Quote:
As to mom and oleo. My mother and her buddies all read Dr. ????Spock and they used to put eggs into everything. I remember RAW eggs put into chocolate milk run through the Waring Blender. I am certain that worrying about this stuff raises your cholesterol. Surely, after we are buried they will study us and wonder can you believe they thought salami was bad for you and they all came from a mother? |
Some generations grew up on Twinkies, Oreo's, Easy Cheese, Spaghetti-Os, Pop Tarts and Bacon Bits.
Oh, that was us. |

Case in point-the bug zapper. If, you ever had one they do not catch mosquitoes which are not attracted to light. Most of what you catch are moths. Brainwashed it perhaps the proper term. People have a instinct to belong to the in crowd. History shows this over and over and over again. A recent demonstration a master at it was Hitler. The Hitler youth. It is far easier to control the young. Just the tool of propaganda and the wanting to belong to the in crowd and Hitler had children turning on their parents. |

OP, plant based foods and burgers are likely what your grandkids are talking about. There are several veggie type burgers at the grocery and some have found there way into restaurants. Burger King has a plant based burger in some of their restaurants and I have seen in the last couple of months “impossible meat” offered in a couple of Mexican grill restaurants. There has been research that claim you can reverse some heart related issues (closed arteries) by eating a plant based diet. Doctor Dean Ornish and his associates have been conducting this research for several years and proven plant based foods and a lifestyle with 30 minute a day exercise can make a difference with cardiac patients. Yes, along with proteins derived from insects. Apparently fed to astronauts too. I have a neighbor that researches and produces this type of protein. We were just used to chocolate covered ants previously.
|
Why are some of you so angry? I can guarantee that no school had a PETA assembly to brainwash your grandchildren. Some people find foods enjoyable which others dislike. Bush hated broccoli. Whether a plant based diet is better for your health is debatable.
But there is nothing wrong with being aware of how your food choices may impact your health and the planet's health. There is no debate that the amount of water required to produce equivalent animal vs plant protein is huge. As well as differences in waste, fertilizers, pollutants both air and water, and greenhouse gases. Science has become a dirty word in some communities. Funny how those same anti-science people all want the latest cancer treatment if they or a loved one needs oncologic care. And the best internet and cell phone. All brought to you by science. |
Sometimes teachers teach what they think - I used to never try to teach something to a child that their parents would object to. Even if it was a method in mathematics. Never wanted to put a child in a position to try to decide who to believe. I did present alternative possibilities, but not brainwashing. I came from a Communist country as a child where brainwashing was the operating system.
I believe the insect protein my neighbor is working on is from worms, he says it tastes like chestnut purré. |

Humans evolved as omnivores. Historically Eskimos lived primarily on animal protein. Other cultures have been mostly vegetarian. Historically, most humans had no choice but to eat what was available to them and when it was available. The transition from hunting and gathering to farming for most was not a healthy move but that is what happened and resulted in huge gains to the human population although at great nutritional cost, at least initially. Probably the meat of modern domesticated for food animals is too fatty to be healthy, at least in quantity. When I was young I ate a lot of red meat; now I rarely do. I currently mostly eat a variety of vegetables and fruit. I feel better eating that way at my age. |
I don't like tofu at all. But I also understand that tofu isn't some newfangled fad. Consumption of tofu dates back around 2000 years and is a common ingredient in foods in China and other countries on the other side of the world.
I also understand that a lot of the rest of the world does not rely quite as heavily on meat as most Americans, and appreciate plant-based foods much more than we do. In general. I'm not a vegetarian. I like steak, and burgers, and especially bacon. But I also like salads, and hummus, and other foods that are common in other parts of the world that aren't meat-based. Might try opening your minds, those of you who make fun of non-meat foods. Or put your fear aside. Being afraid to try new things at your age is pretty silly. You have a lot less to lose, afterall. |

Soya burger
Remember soya burger from the 1970's?
I tried eating that as a university student on a budget! It never caught on until now, I guess :) |

Way back when I was a teenager I was running a combine harvesting soy beans for a neighbor farmer. I stopped at noon to go home and eat, our farm was less than 1/4 mile away. He invited me to eat with him and his wife saying she had cooked extra for me. They were vegetarians, a vegetarian farmer, who would have thought. They had some kind of vegetable meat substitute, it looked nasty but it didn't taste bad kinda blah. Definitely didn't taste like meat though. I'm sure it has improved considerably since then but haven't tried any of it. I do eat a lot more vegetable now than when I was young and there are days where we don't eat meat. I'll never be a vegetarian though.

Back in HS in the late 1950s I took a lot of Bob Hoffman's Hi-Proteen soybean powder mixed into milk shakes. Dinosaur Training: Did Hi-Proteen Kill Bob Hoffman? It tasted awful but I choked it down. Don't know if it helped but I gained 40 pounds of muscle. Of course strenuous bodybuilding workouts probably had something to do with that!

With a little creatine, I bet. At my gym GH was common and some people did steroids. But some didn’t. I remember these two high school kids in their last year trying to get a football scholarship to uni. They were in the gym 4-6 hours a day, every day. I asked who washed their clothes and they said their mom. They lived mostly on Whey powder drinks.

Cut out all fake food and get back to basics. A thick slice of Spam fried in real lard. Can't get any better than that!

Old joke. Anyway, back to meat analogues (that's what they're called): tofurky, chik'n, field roast. All things that are made to resemble meat, or pretend to resemble meat, or cut like meat, taste like it, etc...but are absolutely not meat. Vegans: if you really don't want to eat meat, that's your prerogative. But it's kind of self-defeating if you're just going to pretend you're eating meat. Either you want meat or you don't. If you do, stop whining about killing Porky, enjoy your bacon, and be done with it. If you don't, stop pretending to eat the stuff. It's embarrassing. Good grief. You know there are some really AWESOME things you can eat, that aren't meat, and aren't trying to pretend to be meat either. Plant-based foods that are delicious in their own right. Like hummus. And falafel smushed into a pita pocket with lettuce and ripe tomato and tons of tahini dressing. Some folks absolutely love fried eggplant. There are some kickass bean soups that don't have even a smidge of animal product in them. I just don't get the whole "fake meat" nonsense. Either eat meat, or don't. Eating fake meat is just fake eating. I feel the same way about sugar substitutes too. Corn syrup is corn syrup, not a substitute for sugar. Same with maple syrup, honey, and agave. They're normal natural sweeteners that don't have to be fake anything. Sucralose, splenda, aspartame, sweet n low, all these things are fake. They're chemically created sugars and artificial sweeteners that are disgusting and your cake really tastes horrible when you bake with it, no matter how polite your guests are when they pretend it's delicious. |
Diets are a funny thing. For me, carbohydrates are poison. Anything with white flour or sugar in it is never going into my mouth. I eat meat but seldom, mostly fish, beans, nuts, eggs, whole grains, fruit and vegetables. An occasional lean steak or pork loin is a treat, but not an everyday part of the diet. My three sisters are all vegetarians, and two of the three are seriously overweight. They claim that they eat healthy, but don't make the mistake of putting a box of Whitman Chocolates anywhere near them or they will disappear before your can blink.

It’s so difficult to go very low on carbs.

I disagree with this. Some people stop eating meat because they don't believe in killing animals for food, and because raising animals for food creates an environmental hazard when done on a large scale. That doesn't mean they don't like the taste of meat. There are many reasons to stop eating meat. If someone comes up with a viable alternative for these people, it's not embarrassing for them to eat it. It is in keeping with their particular philosophy or health needs. I don't find that self defeating at all. |

If it disgusts you, if the idea of eating meat gives you the creeps, then stop reminding yourself of meat by eating foods that are shaped and seasoned to smell JUST LIKE meat. It's hypocritical and demonstrative that you're only choosing a vegan lifestyle because you got caught on the trend and backing out would prove you were wrong. And you can't do that. I have seen perhaps - three people on the internet, and met one person in real life, who was vegan and actually walked the walk - embraced the lifestyle with their soul, rather than just their behavior. |
Talking about personal beliefs, such as why a person is a vegan, lacto ovo, gluten free, or otherwise if you are not asked about it is just as impolite as talking about politics or religion. It is a personal belief or need and it should stay personal. To expect the world to follow is ridiculous.
I know in my old country parents and grandparents would cook something and try to force it on you whether you wanted to eat it or not. To me it shows disrespect. It is not ok to evangelize one’s beliefs except under the appropriate conditions. It is saying, “I’m right, you better listen to me!” It shows trying to control. If someone serves something you don’t like, a “No, thank you” will do, and if you can’t stand the smell of meat (I seriously can’t stand the smell of cooking meat) then walk away or get a mask. If people want you there, they’ll ask why. Then you can say something as you have been invited to. Even evangelize. Usually if you relate it to good taste and health people will listen. |
We have allowed insanity to take over

As to fake meat. See the obvious. While I've not tried it, I have read about it. Realize it looks something like meat and tastes something like meat-hum, your body is telling you something. Also, from what I've read it is not particularly good for you-high in fat and salt. |
