New York Style Pizza
Lots of restaurants in The Villages advertise that they serve New York style pizza. When I worked, I travelled to NY City a lot. I would often buy a slice of pizza at a local pizza place. It was less than a half inch thick and had equal amounts of sauce and cheese. The sauce was the best part. Some New Yorkers would fold the pizza in half and eat it like a sandwich. Is that still the way they make it in New York? None of the so called New York style pizza I have had here is anything like that. It's too thick, has too much cheese, and you can barely taste the sauce. Definitely not foldable.

Yes, that is still how they make it in NYC. Thin crust, spread the tomato sauce, then sprinkle on the cheese. For a quick slice in NY Penn Station, Rosie's is hard to beat.

Can't get NY pizza in FLA - just people who say they have NY pizza
|
All the pizza here is meant to be eaten with a knife & fork, NYC style--foretabboutit

Try Sammy's Italian

Could not find decent "Northeast" style pizza in the villages. Good pizza not only comes from New York, but add New England to the region that knows good pizza - Boston, Providence, New Haven . . . name it.
Now, where is the best pizza and Italian food in this area? In my Northend Boston opinion go to Belleview Pizza up in Belleview. It's the best we have found. BOGO PASTA DINNERS 3 -5 weekdays! WARNING: Doesn't open until 3PM. CASH ONLY! |

They have Sicilian thick crust pie AND ALSO have New York style hand-tossed, thin crust pie baked in a stone oven. The thin crust folds nicely for a nice big bite. Also, did you know that you can order thin crust pizza at Giovanni's Ristorante a little farther east on 446? You have to ask for the thin crust as their normal pizza has a thicker non-foldable crust. The thin crust style folds nicely and has what I think is a pretty good mix of sauce and cheese. |
I have tried NYPD, but maybe not the thin crust. Have not tried Giovanni's, but I will get to it.
|
I tried NYPD Pizza on 466, just east of 301, it is the 2nd worst pizza i have ever eaten. First worst was Jerry's in Mt Pleasant Ia in 1968.

Great, this again.

Jerry said it was getting too hard to find good employees and he's been sitting in a wheelchair while cooking in the kitchen for the past several years. Many of the town's 8,600 residents packed his place during the last week it was open, some of them of waiting up to 3 hours for their pizza. Many of the customers standing in line said Jerry always made the best pizza in south-east Iowa. |

I've switched over to Shrimp! :1rotfl: |
In my 8 years here I've eaten everything from brick oven pizza at Mallory Country Club to Bravo Pizza at LSL. I have two places I go to for pizza.
For gooey and fairly thin pizza, I go to Giovanni's at Southern Trace, you can fold this pizza over. His brother will soon be opening a place at Pinellas Plaza, I believe it will be called Roberto's. I'm not looking for a bargain, but their prices are from 20 years ago. They have great spaghetti and at lunch, you get spaghetti with meat sauce, a nice salad and bread for $6.95, Incredible! https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/me...l-favorite.jpg Actually I prefer even thinner pizza and not so gooey, for that I go to Sammy Joe's at Mulberry Plaza at the north end of TV. They will make the pizza to the edge without much crust, just as for 'to the edge'. I love their pizza and usually eat there once a week even though it's 30 minute drive from my house. The lady that owns the place also just recently sold her other restaurant Son Rise Cafe to Darrels, so now she has been adding more items to the menu. https://static.wixstatic.com/media/1...1cd75~mv2.webp |

I like the pizza at Sammy's on rte301. I can fold it, and the oil drips out from the "V". Just like on Long Island when I was a kid.
|
Sammy is from Brooklyn...
|
NAPOLINO'S has the closest thing to New York pizza. They are located on 301. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed.

Small world indeed! :D Yeah, I would certainly say that 52 years straight in any business means...a lot of folks are satisfied with the product/service. :ho: |
Nothing like Regina’s pizza in the Norh End, then off to Modern pastries on Hanover Street.
|
Gio's s deli on 301 is really great. I like the NYC with more cheese.

Anybody
Anybody can make crust or spread sausage or other stuff on a pizza but it is the Sauce that makes the pizza and that is a New York thing. If someone in the Villages wants to make a good pizza go to New York City, little Italy or similar, buy a pint of their sauce and then bring it back to the Villages and work until you have copied it. Have eaten pizza in Italy in Naples, Rome, Milan, Arce, etc and NY City is similar in taste because they are from the areas and their mothers use to make the sauce. I have not tasted anything like the real sauce in The Villages and don't understand why someone who specials in Pizza doesn't just go to the real source and copy it. In a lot of cases they will not share how they make the sauce. My mother in law, who came from Italy made the best meat balls and sauce you could ever eat BUT she never really gave out how she made anything. :ho:

NY Pizza
I have had Pizza at all the places named above. There is no such thing as N.Y.Pizza in TV. As a college student I have had Pizza allover NYC. My favorite places were actually on or around Times Square. BUT, if you happen to be in, or around, Deland, FL try Tony's Pizza. Directly across from the Court House. Closest to NY Pizza in FL i have had. A little far to drive for Pizza. But if you happen to be in the neighborhood.....

I agree, it's all about the sauce. I met a very Italian lady who was from the North End of Boston who made the greatest sauce. I asked her for her recipe and she didn't have one. I asked her if I could watch her make it, which I did about 3 times and my sister did about 5 times. We finally nailed it. She would only use the Pastene San Marznao crushed tomatoes and the sausage had to be both hot and mild Italian from her favorite deli and the meatballs also had to be made a certain way. But I can still make it almost exactly the way she did and it is fabulous. Can't get the right sausage every time. One condition I had to agree to in order to watch her make it was to never give it away. Allow close friends to watch how it's done, but never give it away. Must be a North End of Boston thing.

Actually, we got delivery from Bravo last night. They were 10” personal pizzas and thus had to be thin. We ordered one cheese pizza (Robert, natch), one Amatrice and one Amalfi. They were all delicious and—praise all that is good and holy—they were steaming hot! This is rare no matter which pizza shop you use. We like the sauce. They are generally heavy on the cheese, so I wouldn’t ask for extra. We actually ask for “light” cheese if it’s only a cheese pizza. And don’t forget they also offer MANY dishes. If Bravo can continue fast delivery, they’ve got it made! |
Piezanos Stone Fire is close to open. Superb.
