New Gallup Poll: Conservative more than 2X more patriotic than Libs.....Duh!!!

I don't really have to say anything, but a new Gallup Poll finds that Conservatives are more than twice as likely to be strongly patriotic as a Liberal. This is obvious to even the most casual observer though.

Wow, amazing. Like Ben Stein said, "I mean I gave serious consideration to whether I even wanted to write a post on this poll. I don’t write about water being wet, do I?"

Gee, you could have knocked me over with a feather. I'm shocked!!!

Guest 07-06-2010 06:38 AM

what??

Richie, you and I have political differences and that's O.K.But when you post total garbage and spin it your way I take exception. 2x more patriotic? The first sentence says"conservitives are twice as likely as liberals to express very strong patriotism". So that means there 2x more patriotic? Only if you don't read the rest of the article. Here were 3 of the choices given...Extremely patriotic was choice 1 very patriotic was choice 2 and somewhat patriotic was choice 3. Now suppose you choose #1 and I choose #2. Does that make you 2x more patriotic? No.no.no. Nice try. I might also point out that patriotism has many different meanings,it is certainly not a blind trust in all we as a country do and waving the flag does NOT mean you are a patriot.

Guest 07-06-2010 06:43 AM

Wouldn't it depend on whose flag your waving?

Guest 07-06-2010 10:39 AM

no it would not. Your inane comment really deserves no response but what the heck. There are many Italian Americans waving Italian flags during the world cup. Are they not patriotic?

Criticism of my post withstanding, I really meant what I said. I have seen a disregard of the USA flag on many occasions. These same people for reasons unknown, despise the USA. The same people who burned it in the 60's are now teaching our children. Nice cup of tea, huh?

Guest 07-06-2010 05:03 PM

I have also seen it and don't agree with it. But your observation has nothing to do with the original post.

To me the main point was that 2X more people who classify themselves Conservative said they were strongly patriotic that people who classify themselves Liberal. What more is there to say?

It has everything to do with this thread. Patriotism is supposed to be taught to our young. Our history and heritage is being monkeyed around with by the "educational" system paid for by American taxpayers. This country was founded by conservative patriots.

Guest 07-06-2010 08:57 PM

and what's the difference between strongly patriotic and just plain patriotic. This ridiculous notion that conservatives are more patriotic than liberals is a joke.

Guest 07-06-2010 09:06 PM

Pat2010 "our history and heritage is being monkeyed around with by the educational system". No its being destroyed by a combination of the federal govt and its unfunded mandates and the worst parented group of children in American history where all a child is told is how good he/she is and failure is not possible and the over protection of these spoiled brats is sickening.Just about the only place where there are a few expectations for a child is in school.

My reaction comes in two words:

"Define patriotic"

Pollsters hate me. I live in New Hampshire. I get to tweak them every four years :)

I know when I see it.

Guest 07-13-2010 04:52 PM

You make my point. I know what *I* consider "patriotic", but to have some pollster group use the word? What do THEY mean? How is the data going to be used? Do they consider it patriotic to speak out against bad laws? Is "patriotic" simply wearing a flag pin? Can you be "patriotic" and not know the difference between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States?

We all have our definition.

Guest 07-13-2010 05:03 PM

The poll asked respondents this question: “How patriotic are you? Would you say extremely patriotic, very patriotic, somewhat patriotic, or not especially patriotic?”

That is it. Simple. Plain. Don't twist it around. Geez.

It's like asking your spouse, "How much do you love me? Would you say extremely, very, somewhat or not especially?

If you answer "Define love." Or "What's the difference between extremely or somewhat?" You are in trouble.

:BigApplause: To some people there will never be black or white. To some people there is nothing but gray or as the liberals always say, "nuances."

It means

Patriotic means "vote for America not Obama".

Commodore Stephen Decatur's Definition

One of our countries most revered Naval leaders gave this definition: "Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations, may she always be in the right; but still our country, right or wrong."
— Stephen Decatur

I believe that sums it up,

I'm willing to bet that unpatriotic liberals had relatives that would not fight against King George.

BTK's quote sums it up IMHO.

Thanks Pat2010. A good cry is always a refreshing way to start my morning.

We had a private send off last week for one of our military friends stationed at Fort Bragg. I went shopping with his wife Saturday and played golf with her on Sunday to help keep her occupied while her husband is away.

She is one of the most pro-Americans I know. She knows more about world history and current world events than most people I know. She's a true American patriot.

Funny thing is, she was born in Russia and became an American citizen on her own before she married a soldier. It was her father's dream that she fulfilled. He wanted his children to come to America and live under our republic. She loves this country and has more pride in the US Constitution than most liberals I know who were born under our flag.

As a born conservative

When I was in my teens I met a girl and fell in love with her.

We were planning to get married as soon as we graduated and I found a job.

During the next four years we began to argue about almost everything.

As we became more educated we were able to figure out our problem.

She was a born Democrat.

We parted friends with a full agreement that Liberals and Conservatives cannot communicate because they each have a different thought process.

I hope there are not too many marriages spoiled by this situation. We were lucky.

Your post is an example of a brilliant analogy. Bravo!!!
There was no way a Lib naysayer could counter your simple to understand and succinct post.

Cashman I think you hit the proverbial nail squarely on the head!!!

I also feel that many people had, or should I say formed, an opinion many years ago and there is absolutely nothing you can say that would change their mind.
I also feel the academic types are the worse, as they spend their work and free time with people of similar beliefs as their own.
