Can the Daily Sun spread the virus?????

We're told to sterilize everything we touch.
How many people handle our newspaper before we get it?

Probably a lot less than the people who handle the food you eat before you get it.

Arctic Fox 03-29-2020 11:53 AM

The newspaper itself should be okay, but wash your hands after taking off the plastic cover

Taltarzac725 03-29-2020 11:57 AM

Newspapers CAN'''T pass on coronavirus and are completely safe to read, scientists confirm

Looks like chances are small for that.

The production of a typical newspaper is pretty much fully automated from the time a HUGE roll of newsprint is loaded onto the spindle to being bundled in the "mailroom", then delivered to trucks for transport.

Then the carrier breaks the bundles and bags/delivers the paper.

But first the carrier folds them so they touch the paper, touch the bag and touch it again when they toss them on the driveway. Who knows how many of them get sneezed or coughed on while in the car. I take it out of the bag, toss it in the trash and wipe my hands. I would assume a lot of people that are cautious have cancelled their subscription.

But is the paper folded and stuffed into the bag by machine?

Every morning my neighbor leaves a treat on her porch for my dog. I pick up her newspaper and put it close to her garage door. Hmm... Maybe I'll use a glove. I can't wash my hands till we get back home from our walk around the block.

Microwave the paper

I heard that microwaving for 30 seconds kills the virus. I Remove the plastic, throw it in the trash, microwave the paper for thirty seconds and wash your hands and wipe down the microwave handle.

rsgolfer 03-30-2020 05:22 AM

I throw the bag in the trash and set the paper aside on my bench in the garage. Sanitize my hands and then pick up yesterday’s paper. I do the same thing with our mail and groceries that don’t require refrigeration. If anyone knows of a setter and safer way, I want to hear it. Maybe I’m being overly cautious, but two people in my family (younger & different area) have contracted Covid-19 and the symptoms are brutal.

Your

Your worried about your Newspaper, how many different people touch the mail you pick up everyday, how many different people touch what you buy at the Supermarket every time you try and buy something or the fruit & vegetables where does it stop. Wash your hands and keep your fingers & hands to yourself IF your that worried. How few are staying home or IF you go out keep the suggested spacing.

Just thinking that with all the junk mail in my box.

Not when I used to work at The Daily Sun.

The printing is very automated but the inserts are all "built" assembled by hand. Each worker adds one insert then another then stuffs the paper with them. Now, the inserts (flyers) are almost non-existent because of businesses are closing but all are done by hand. The people working the printing presses do wear gloves but they we're working with ink. I'm assuming the workers "building" the inserts are now wearing gloves because of all the possibilities of contamination

Putting your paper into bags was done by by the delivery person out in the parking lot in their personal vehicles. Like someone mentioned, the papers are then in their cars, they are breathing, possibly coughing or sneezing and that will possibly contaminate the plastic bag.

We've decided to put our paper on hold for a month.

Stay safe and think of others.

Good to know. Thanks for the information.

as long as you do not touch your face or mouth or eyes, you can wait until you get home to wash your hands.

The Daily Sun does not have an online addition. I believe you'e referring to their webpage, however that offers only brief snippets of some articles. Not the same detail as the actual paper.

Skunky1 03-30-2020 08:00 AM

Yes. By advertising social gatherings such as fleamarket’s estate sales and garage sales. Also by encouraging residence to congregate at the various Village Square’s.

walterray1 03-30-2020 08:04 AM

Seems like another overreaction to me. However, it is a personal choice like most everything else.

Newspaper and veterans group in TV

There is a veterans group that uses those bags and funny pages / crossword puzzles to send overseas to the troops...please save the bags and pages in your garage until they start meeting again...I can’t remember their group name as we only come down for February, however, we save our stuff and donate to them...:coolsmiley:

How many people use cash for transactions? Cash is handled by thousands of people.

I use a credit card for almost everything. After I put it in the machine, I wipe is off with alcohol.

NJSonja 03-30-2020 09:48 AM

yes, I'm paranoid, I cancelled my newspaper until this is over, whenever that is...

I guess the solution for that is stay in your house like you’re told & when you do read the paper, wear rubber or latex gloves then after you read the paper throw it out or put in garage then wash your rubber gloves in bleach water to use read paper tomorrow or throw them out & use a new pair. Everyone has a solution for this so do what you think you should do. Be safe & God Bless!

The simplest solution is a) cancel the DS subscription b) get the news online.

DonnaNi4os 03-30-2020 10:21 AM

Talk about hot off the press!

Byte1 03-30-2020 11:03 AM

Seems like a no brainer to me. If you are worried about catching something from the paper, discontinue it until you feel safe.

mraines 03-30-2020 11:16 AM

I've stopped my paper. Not taking the chance.

I'd rather take my chances with the paper than with food from take out or delivery.

I like reading about all good deals at restaurants that are closed.
The sales fliers with toilet paper on sale.
Like rubbing your face in what you can't have

Not being able to read the paper--one more thing we can't do while stuck inside!

I agree with you about taking chances. Actually, I'm thinking about ORDERING the paper now that we will not be leaving for probably 10 months.

Just wear gloves to get the paper out of its plastic bag and then wash your hands before and after reading it.

Pretend you just went to the grocery store to buy it.

In an emergency birth the most sterile thing to use is a newspaper. Not touched by humans from the time paper is made and out on a roll, not touched durning printing. Only time it is touched is when it’s taken out of bundle, and outside page is folded.

More than once we used to get the newborn wrapped in newspaper delivered in the back of a car.

I would bet the person that is wearing gloves, otherwise on some days their hand would never get the print off. The gloves is just my thoughts

Mumbles 03-31-2020 04:14 AM

Wadda ya mean?! I cook for my wife and I every day, and I very nearly sterilize my hands about 10 X a day to be sure I won't infect her or myself.

By the way, are all y'all aware that it is IMPOSSIBLE to totally sterilize your skin? If you could do it, it would destroy the skin. There is always tiny, tiny areas on your hands where a tiny, tiny droplet of coronavirus can land. If that droplet gets to any of your mucous membranes, you WILL get an infection. Hopefully, you will not die of it.

Put a hold on it, not worth the risk:MOJE_whot:

bilcon 03-31-2020 08:15 AM

Yes, The Daily S-- is not helping to curb the spread of the virus. Just read the stories and pictures they print about the great social gatherings still going on in TV. B3 today. They just don't get it.

There you go, good solution! You said it short & to the point!

maybe 04-01-2020 09:38 PM

I am thinking of suspending delivery, but meanwhile I let it sit in driveway in the sun until 3pm or later. The exposed paper actually has turned yellow by then! I still wash my hands after handling it.

CatskillBill 04-02-2020 01:11 PM

I just put the paper on hold indefinitely until we get through this.
The only thing I will miss is the Crossword/Jumble page anyway.
Everyone, stay safe.
