Stores with aisles should consider.....

One-way aisles to facilitate social distancing. They are doing this in Northern Virginia now.

Store Isles

Publix has done this. They've put directional arrows on the floors. Unfortunately, many shoppers don't understand or simply ignore them.

They've been doing it at our local Costco (Seattle Area) for over a month now.

They also have an area designated with disinfected carts. They only allow about 40 people in the store at a time. Five out, five in..

The cashier touches nothing if at all possible. Gun scan your card. Gun scan the items in your cart if possible. Customer rotates items to facilitate gun scanning. If the conveyor does get used it gets disinfected between customers. Even with only 40 customers in the store they still have 5 registers open.

A reader board outside displaying in/out of stock status on popular items. If it's out of stock no need standing in line outside.

Several employees directing the traffic flow and wiping things down. All wearing masks and gloves.

A lot of effort but worth it. I wish Home Depot and Lowes would come even close to such effort. Both of those places have been a zoo..

Probably stop sign runners...…………………..:clap2:

I was in Publix today and noticed the arrows....great idea. Now if we could only get some people to get with the program. Yes, it does make skipping aisles a little more challenging, but every little bit helps.

We "experienced" that for the first time today at Publix Colony. I can say we and many others unknowingly didn't follow them for a while because there was no notice posted, didn't hear any announcements or see any signs in the store. After our third aisle going the wrong way along with lots of others we noticed the thin little blue tape arrows on the floor after someone politely advised us. Generally we don't pay attention to the floor when we shop and they used very narrow blue tape so it wasn't very obvious as we weren't thinking about the floor but only getting my Spaghetti O's (out of stock of course). It's a great idea but they need some "standing up" signs to advise shoppers and then I think many more would have heeded them. Walmart is supposed to be doing it as well but as of yesterday was not and the same for Aldi per the news reports.

They also announce that they've put them there, every hour. Thanking the customers for respecting social distancing and sticking with the one-way aisle pattern.

If the customers don't notice FOUR signs on the wall when you come in that reads, in big bold colored letters: CLEAN CARTS OVER THERE >>>>>>>>>>>>>

then what makes you think they'll notice a sign standing up in front of an aisle warning them to go the other way?

Pro-tip: if you see someone washing down carts over "THERE" then try looking over "HERE" for the ones that are already clean.

True, but that shouldn't stop them for attempting to make it more obvious. We must have been there BETWEEN announcements or were too busy running down the aisles the wrong way singing "Oh Oh No Spaghetti O's" again and maybe didn't hear it. ;)

If they had security guards with AR-15s standing on the end of each aisle ordering y'all to comply with the arrows on the floor, SOME folks would just pretend they didn't hear the guards. Or they really don't hear them because they forgot to change their hearing aid battery that morning.

People are just very funny sometimes :)

Gainesville has been doing this since March, with limited people inside at all times. In every store

They're the same people who drive down the parking lot aisles in the wrong direction

davem4616 04-14-2020 06:37 AM

I noticed the blue arrows last time I went to Publix...

I didn't see them when I first went in and apparently went the wrong way down one isle... I'm not in the habit of looking at the ground when I walk

Once I did see them, no problem

Joyce952 04-14-2020 07:00 AM

Publix is doing one way aisles but people are not paying attention to it

bdelor 04-14-2020 07:06 AM

Publix is broadcasting a message of the new policy in the store, but people are NOT paying attention. I pass people going the wrong way and kindly mention the arrows on the floor. The cashiers are constantly reminding people to stay on the taped line. Eventually they will begin to notice (I hope).

Swoop 04-14-2020 07:22 AM

So, explain to me how passing someone going in the same direction in the isle is that much safer than passing someone going in the opposite direction?!?!? In theory you should spend less time within their 6’ social distancing space if you pass them going the opposite way.

Right, like people going to follow the signs. People are still walking too close, golfing too close, waiting in line too close. Signs. Are suggestions, just like stops signs, yield signs, and speed limit signs. Always going to be precent that will NEVER follow signs.

I went to Publix a few days ago. Never noticed the arrows and when I was in line to check out, they made the announcement. All 3 people in line with me agreed we had no idea that it was one way and we all felt like a’holes for not complying. My beef is husbands and wives shopping together and clogging up the aisle. One of you please stay home! Thank god my husband hates shopping It would take me twice as long if he were with me!

Stu from NYC 04-14-2020 08:13 AM

What a great idea.

Also wish people would not stand and look and look at items before deciding what to purchase. Have to wait for them to clear that area before I can grab what I came for,
My goal in food shopping now is get in and out as quickly as possible.

Canada has implemented this weeks ago with directional arrows and signs with 6 feet distancing on the floor.

Katieburr 04-14-2020 08:33 AM

They should hang the arrows in a placard from the ceiling. Most people don’t look at the floor when walking.

NavyVet 04-14-2020 08:44 AM

Amazing how often one sees people going the wrong way on a one way parking lot lane. Maybe they're the same people who leave their carts in the middle of the store aisle so NOBODY can get by either direction and those who walk in the middle of the parking aisles instead of off to one side. Clueless. SMH

allsport 04-14-2020 08:49 AM

Is that new? I did not see them the last time I was there.

santiagobob 04-14-2020 08:51 AM

I have not been in a Publix ,Sams or Walmart in 3 weeks. Each time I drove by one of these stores, the parking lot was full so I kept going. On one occasion I did see a Publix worker getting carts in the lot and I stopped him and asked if it was like this everyday. He said it is this busy every day and many of the people are the same every day. Even if they find the paper product they want one day they are back the next day looking for more.I think the only way to control the number of shoppers is to limit them by assigning Mondays to only persons with the last name begging with ABCor D. Tuesday with last name begging with EFGH and so on. This might stop some people from filling their garage with paper products that they don't need. Just my thiught.

Customers who come in with two adults AND a child. During a pandemic. This doesn't apply to most folks in the Villages but - here's a little life hack for the exceptions:

There is a really bad contagious sickness going around, and it could kill your 5-year-old daughter if she catches it. Your daughter doesn't need to decide which brand of boxed cereal she'll be eating. If you don't know by now what kind she likes, then just put her up for adoption and be done with it. You also don't need to consult with her on whether or not you'll be buying hotdogs this week. Just assume that you will, and buy them. Leave your kid at home. And if you can't, well your spouse/boyfriend/adult sibling is with you - that person and your daughter can sit in the car, with the adult behind the wheel, car running, AC on.

There is ZERO reason for two adults and one kid to be in a supermarket during this pandemic.

And if you're an Instacart driver, it means you're doing this multiple times EVERY SINGLE DAY. If your kid gets sick and dies, it'll be 100% entirely your fault. If you think you'll be okay with that, carry on. If not, stop it.

We get a handful or two of Instacart drivers. They come in every single day, because that's their job. They are "professional shoppers" for customers who cannot or will not go into the stores. They're doing a huge service for the community and risk their lives to do it (for a fee, of course).

The ones who come in with kids though - need to stop doing that.

I was at Publix this am and the directional arrows were announced over the store speaker. I really didn't notice them until I was finished. In the future I will heed to this BUT I did notice that quite a few of employees were not wearing masks. So I really don't see how walking in one direction is as important as employees wearing masks

Carla B 04-14-2020 10:13 AM

I was in WalMart Sunday afternoon and traffic was fairly calm and sedate until this young father with four running and yelling kids came blasting through the store. Fortunately, I only had to cross paths with them once. Please, parents, leave your children with a responsible adult at home or outside somewhere.

Easy, don't pass. Wait until the person in front of you finds what they are looking for and then move forward behind them. Yes, it will take longer but if increasing risk to people in the store so you can get your stuff then maybe send someone else who understands the risk and has patience.

So, spending more time in an enclosed space makes more sense to you?

Nonsense. Do you not pass the car doing 20 on a 45 road? I’m not standing behind some label reader when I want to get in and out as quickly as possible.

Yeah if I just put ice cream in my cart, I'm not going to stand there waiting for Madam Fussy to argue with her kids about whether or not they are getting frozen pizza for dinner that night. And that's just the first frozen aisle. Now I have to deal with waiting in the next aisle, for whoever and whoever else taking their sweet time reading ingredients of things they know they were planning on getting anyway, because no one else exists, and no one else is trying to just get through that aisle without contracting a potentially fatal disease.

By the time I get to checkout, the ice cream is melted and I don't want it anymore.

Suffice it to say - I haven't bought any ice cream since Kilwen's closed. I really miss ice cream.

Vknanu3 04-14-2020 11:33 AM

Why social distancing now?

Almost everyone is wearing masks at the grocery store. Social distancing was started to keep unmasked people from transmitting or contracting the virus.
So why are we so obsessive about this now?
Think!

Because probably at least 50% are NOT wearing masks. Personally I think this one way aisle designation is a waste of time but just as a result of trying to do SOMETHING when feeling helpless.
