Made a trip to the pool this morning

So I made my maiden voyage to the pool closest to me this morning. I had no problem using it and it was nice to get back in the water.

This pool, and I assume all that are open, has a person who's sole job is to admit people to the pool and make sure the rules are enforced. I wouldn't want that job. He is required to deal with people like me that question stupid policies. He was a nice guy and I stayed polite and smiling. Here is how it went:

I walked up to the 6 ft line on the ground and stood on it. He asked me to move back behind the line (about 6 inches) so I did. I was now less than 6 feet from the person behind me now but I had to take the chance. He then asked for my name and Village ID number and I complied.

Then I asked him "I read the policy in the Recreation News and I'm wondering how I'm going to swim in my mask?" He said "most people at this pool don't swim. The best place for that is one of the regional centers". I said "well, I think the mask is required for ALL indoor and outdoor activities policy is in effect there too". He said "I'll have to ask about that. I'm just trying to do what they told me to". I assured him I knew he was not the policy maker.

I noticed he was not wearing a mask but had one on the table next to him. I said "I noticed you don't need a mask out here". He said " I had to take it off because people couldn't hear me." I said "well it's a good thing the virus is contained to inside the pool area where we will be wearing them". He ignored my rapier like wit and just reminded me I had 1 hour maximum.

He was right about most people not swimming. I knew this, of course, because I go there every day when it is open. Most are 70 and 80sh ladies that walk across the pool and gab. This was the case today. 1 with a mask and 2 without while in the water. I did swim and left my mask at my chair until I returned. I did wear my mask while sun bathing since I don't want mom and dad to restrict us again.

We smiled at each other and chatted a little on my way out. The guy has thick skin. I enjoyed my time but have 2 concerns. A few hundred love bugs did not practice social distancing. I hope they aren't carriers. The other concern is I'm gonna end up with a tan on my face that is dark on the forehead and chin and white where the mask goes. Maybe it will start a new fad.

Walking by the golf courses this morning along O'Dell I didn't notice any golfers that I saw (which was a only a maybe 16 or so) wearing masks either. Is golf considered an "activity" or is it exempt from that description ?

CarolSells 05-04-2020 12:47 PM

Thank you! I knew it was going to be interesting when you mentioned that you liked to question stupid policies! 😆
Your “rapier like wit” did indeed show through.

Glad you got to go. Thanks again.

Just grow a beard, that would solve that problem. :D :D

We are still hesitant about using a pool now. Will see how things develop

Do you get your jollies giving someone a hard time? The guy was there to insure the rules were obeyed so the powers that be don't shut down the pools again. He doesn't make the rules and may decide they are stupid also but he has a job to do. If you don't like the rules don't go to the pool, as simple as it gets. You should be ashamed and go back and apologize to that man.

I never had much time for people who play the smart 4&$* with a a bloke just doing his job to the best of his ability.

Medtrans 05-04-2020 01:08 PM

Poor guy. I would hate to be an employee here. Put yourself in his place. It’s day #1. They’re trying hard to make everyone happy and yet......

Maiden Voyage.............really classy. :ohdear:

Villageswimmer 05-04-2020 01:26 PM

Most unkind. These folks shouldn’t need to put up with your smart remarks. They’re your neighbors and we’re all in this together. Not at all funny.

What ever gave you (and others) the idea that NOW you have to wear a mask to golf????

Boomer 05-04-2020 01:52 PM

Never mind. In the post I just deleted, I told the OP what I thought of his treatment of the guy just trying to do his job. It was not pretty — so I edited it out.

Sincerely,

Golf courses ar not part of the Recreation and Parks Department. Policies of the R&P do not apply to golf.

manaboutown 05-04-2020 02:23 PM

As a former swimming pool lifeguard while in college I had to learn to deal with difficult people. It was a tossup as to whether the drunks or the inattentive mothers of small children were a bigger problem. I had to keep an unwavering eye on their tykes and pull them out when they kept wandering into deep water to drown while their mothers dozed in the sun.

You could not pay me enough to work that pool gatekeeper's job.

Yes, some TOTV members comprise a rough crowd.

Why apologize? The man was not wearing a mask. How about speaking LOUDER so people could hear him? His excuse for not wearing a mask was lame as hell.

Thank you for a factual response vs. a fact-less comment. While I still find it to be illogical as to why it also shouldn't apply to golf as it would to shuffleboard, horseshoes and tossing bags of beans into a hole (despite the regulatory reason you provided) at least there is a "technical" reason for it. :)

John_W 05-04-2020 03:05 PM

I just went and got my mail and and normally on a day like today, there would be 20 golf carts in front of the Tamarind Grove pool, I only saw two carts at 2pm today.

npwalters 05-04-2020 03:20 PM

I'll make three points for those not were quick to criticize and slow to see the irony (and a little humor).

1) I asked a question regarding a mask while swimming assuming the flaw in the policy was so obvious that the enforcers would have more information.

2) The irony and hypocrisy of an individual who's job is to check that the swimming guest are wearing a mask - is not wearing a mask should have leapt off the page even to the slowest individual.

3) I did not state the location because of point #2

The sports pool are open, the familly pools are open and several adult pools North of 466. I have not read that the priority pools are open.

Ok in the rec news whole page on what pools are open. Family pools are open. Only 3 neighborhood poos open north.

1) I find it humorous you think it is obvious the lowest rung on the ladder would have new unpublished info on the rules.
2) Many people in our community have hearing deficiencies even with hearing aids. They find it difficult to understand speech without seeing the lips moving. It is well known that many people augment hearing with some lip reading.
3) I find it ironical you choose to humiliate and amuse yourself with your quick wit attacking a person without authority to respond to your abuse.
4) I find it ironical that you seem to hold yourself superior to those people that choose to support their community through low paying positions or volunteer work.

No problems at the priority pools today. Person was very pleasant. Not part of developer pools, but still very organized

If they're are no guests at the present time, then a family pool like Sterling Hgts Rec Center wouldn't be so bad. Otherwise, I only use neighborhood pools and with only 3 to chose from and since they're ten miles away, it's the family pool or nothing.

Well today in my travels I saw no less than 12 rental 6 seaters with a teens, and small children. Traffic had doubled since 2 days ago, and noticed many grandchildren with grandparents walking. So I am guessing the family pools will have kids that no one is going to SD.

Better to make a "fact-less" comment than to post the WRONG FACTS in an authoritarian manner.
