Shootings surge in NYC amid disbanding of NYPD’s plainclothes anti-crime unit

Shootings are surging this week in New York City, with 28 incidents and 38 victims reported since Monday — the day the NYPD disbanded its plainclothes anti-crime unit.

By comparison, the same week last year there were only 12 shootings for the entire week.

In one of the killings, a 35 year old man in Brooklyn was washing his car when an unknown assailant walked up behind and executed him.

Stu from NYC 06-21-2020 08:13 AM

Lets do less to fight crime. What could possibly go wrong?

davem4616 06-21-2020 08:25 AM

Sad, but predictable...what were they thinking would happen

well, more and more people and businesses will be fleeing from the big cities, leaving those big city officials scratching their heads as they watch their tax revenue declining and their drastically underfunded city pension plans getting worse.

do you spell default in upper or lower case?

memo to self....avoid investing in any municipal bonds

BostonRich 06-21-2020 08:26 AM

It is just so hard to believe how stupid these officials/politicians are. I can't believe what is happening in this country. What the hell is going on? Who the hell are these crazy people? I am saddened and fearful.

Yes, they're free to criminals - they just simply steal them. Others have to buy them. However, concealed carry permits are almost impossible to get for any law abiding citizen. Notwithstanding, if you're a celebrity, politician or wealthy individual you can always hire armed protection.

The guy washing his car had no chance even if he was packing a gun, he was washing his wheels when the guy just walked up behind him and shot him in the head. Video at second link above if you care to watch.

This should be of no surprise to anyone. Look what happened in Baltimore after the Freddie Gray incident. The police backed off and homicides soared. The same will happen in every big city that tries to demonize their police force.

billethkid 06-21-2020 10:38 AM

Maybe they have decided there is a "new norm" for unpoliced era murders and assaults.

Most certainly they know that eliminating law enforcement will ONLY embolden the criminal element resulting in increased crime, physical harm and death.

Wouldn't they?

To appease the crowd and the politics they have knowingly traded off law and order for increased violence and murder.

This should scare the living crap out of the average law abiding citizen(s).

The entire issue could have easily been dealt with by stating acceptable rules of engagement.

The law and order abiding majority need to make their wishes known across the country before it becomes too late.

Think the city govt would have some idea that pandering to this minority will cause them to have to find a new way to earn a living after this November.

We have some mighty odd ducks for mayors around this country.

If Giuliani were major, this would not be happening. I’m a born and raised NYer and began my working career during the 70s. You couldn’t walk through the streets without climbing over homeless and being accosted by windshield washers intimidating you when you parked at a red light. A marked difference during Giuliani in the 90s. You actually were inclined to hang around the city to go to a show and have a bite to eat. Because he empowered the police and supported them.

Like you, I too am saddened and fearful. People are crazy, but the leaders of the crazies are crazy like foxes. They know that the continued weakening of our responses to lawlessness and the pandering of political leaders to special interests due to threats of various kinds is working. I believe that the majority of decent, honest people truly support equality for all, but the crazy foxes have succeeded in getting us to focus on and squabble over details, individual events and past injustices, thus making it near impossible to agree on what really needs to be done to set a proper foundation for moving ahead.
The aim of the crazy foxes, is the destruction of our country. They don't want to rock the boat, they want to tip the boat over.
I want and welcome diversity in my country and my community. But, I also welcome law and order equally applied to all. As long as there are those who prey and abuse others the laws must be enforced, order maintained and correcting measures applied equally to all.
Please stay safe. Please stay healthy. Peace.

Mayors in charge of directing police action in a crisis? Police chiefs/commissioners are hired because of their extensive education and experience in law enforcement. My guess would be 95%+ of mayors in the USA have little if any law enforcement expertise, yet they decide the actions or inactions of their city’s police response in a crisis. Anyone care to explain why this system isn’t designed to fail?????

Politicians kind of think they know it all. Why do politicians direct our armed forces in times of war when they have no military background.

One of smartest things Abraham Lincoln did was appoint Grant as general in charge and let him do his job.

Apparently Grant did not do a good enough job defeating the confederacy because his statues are being defaced and toppled.

Absolutely correct! DeBlasio could care less about his police force and they know it.

Very true hoping that the voters remember what the mayor and city council did to their city.

It’s because it’s being done by thugs, who don’t know the difference between Grant and Donald Duck.

Let's see what the data tells us in a month or two. This report to me is one data point, and you need multiple data points to determine a trend. Let the data do the talking.

I guess we can say same thing about George Floyd.

You can't fix stupid. Most were not taught American history and if they were they didn't listen.
This isn't about the confederacy, it is a war on anything that might be about white people. It is a racist attack on the country.

Yes we have moved quickly from "we just want to take down Confederate Generals" to Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Grant, Teddy Roosevelt etc etc

Give them an inch and they take a mile. It's now gotten to "that girl got raped cuz her skirt was too short" territory. "These statues are just asking for it"

I'm still waiting for the name change of New York and Yale, both of which were named for or founded by actual slave traders.

Joe C. 06-22-2020 06:47 AM

Yup …. It's a sad state of affairs. But thankfully, we have the 2nd Amendment, and it's so easy to exercise. Only a few states suppress it …..New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey and Illinois (and maybe a couple more).
I always carry when travelling, and sometimes while here. But methinks that I should carry all the time. After all, TV is considered a "soft target".

In the photo of the 35 year old man in the link you gave, he is giving a gang hand symbol. Frankly, I don’t mind if gang members kill other gang members, so long as they don’t shoot non-members. But last week, wasn’t there a man in Ocala who was shot in the neck by a stray bullet while driving past a gun fight in progress? I would love for the police to protect everyone who wants to be protected, but what do you do if they don’t want to be protected? It’s a difficult situation. Do you give people what they want or what they need? And what if the people who wanted to defund the police then complain that they aren’t being protected? Life is rather confusing and difficult these days.
