Strange things are happening....

Two weeks ago, my Roomba started cleaning at 2am in the morning on a Saturday. I thought perhaps a neighbor's garage door may have set it off. Then, last Thursday, the stereo system cut on and was playing music at 4 AM. On Sunday morning, the Roomba started again. Now while I like a clean home and music, I found these happenings unsettling. The Roomba is not programmed (because I don't know how). And the stereo system cutting on was very unnerving. I thought I had a home invasion. Anyone have any suggestions other than the Russians are hacking? Or that I live in the upside down world? I am getting sleep deprived from all these shenanigans.

Don't have a Roomba but yesterday, or Tuesday (?) most of the cable news networks (and CNBC that has daily stock market news) had a "blurb" about Roomba's issues with programming and things like you observed, including never ending cleaning, and other "strange" happenings. Maybe a google or other search can guide you to these reports and what Roomba is trying to do to correct them.

Have you seen the TV show "Debris"??!!??

Every once in a while our Roomba loses its mind and will vacuum at odd time. If you reboot it, it should correct the issue. The process to reboot varies between the different models. The directions on how to do this will be in the user manual.

At 4am. if I was a Roomba, I would turn on the stereo as well.
It's quite spooky on your own at that time of the morning.
Just wait till Roomba spots the coffee machine, and invites all the local Roombas round for a break!!

Timothyimitchell 03-05-2021 05:54 AM

I love my Roomba. I talk to him. Encourage him. Reward him.

A very adept ghost? Electricity tampering is easy for them I hear. No lamps turning on by themselves?

kendi 03-05-2021 07:02 AM

Do you have a neighbor who is a Ham operator? I know they can set off the golf cart alarms if they happen to be on the same frequency. Don’t know if it’s the same for your electronics but maybe something to look into

dpingram 03-05-2021 07:13 AM

Replace the charging station. Worked for mine.

Probably just a power surge

jimkerr 03-05-2021 07:41 AM

It sounds like a ghost! I’ve heard of Roombas turning on randomly but the stereo going on is really odd!

Maybe a tin foil hat for the Roomba, they work on humans.

Nannyof3 03-05-2021 08:10 AM

A few months ago my TV went on in the middle of the night. I figured I had to have hit something in the remote earlier. never happened again. my Roomba is another story. it's gone off in the middle of the night several times but there's always been an explanation. usually user error

Take it completely apart and throw the prices in different public garbage disposal cans.
If within the next week it reappears and starts cleaning. πŸ‘€ SELL THE HOUSE!

RouseysMom 03-05-2021 08:18 AM

What model roomba and how old? How often do you use it? Same Q for stereo.
The brain in the roomba does not have a very long expected life.

Bill1701 03-05-2021 08:34 AM

As others have mentioned, reboot your Roomba and that should fix the problem. Ours didn't start cleaning, but it would light up at about 10 pm every night. The reboot fixed it. Does your stereo have a clock/timer? If not, I have no idea why it would just turn on, unless you have a pet which might have hit the ON button.

Gulfcoast 03-05-2021 08:59 AM

The roomba thing doesn't surprise me at all. My roomba used to do weird things like that, too. I really hated that thing so much.

As far as the stereo system goes, what type of music was playing? If it was radio it's possible that you when you had it on last, the radio signal was lost at some point and the music stopped playing. Then it refound the connection at 4am.

airstreamingypsy 03-05-2021 09:04 AM

Do you have a spouse? I recommend watching a 1944 film, Gaslight, if you do.

No, throw the pieces down various chimneys.....

Sounds like it's time to call Ghost Busters.

spieka1912 03-05-2021 10:24 AM

You got me thinking, do you have a Siri command device in your home? Perhaps for some reason it is commanding the stereo to activate.
Something could have infiltrated the system. Just a thought.

I have had my roomba for a couple of years. Never learned how to program it. About 2 months ago it started cleaning on Thursday night at 5:50. Blamed new neighbor ??? Thought he hacked my wifi ?

Number 10 GI 03-05-2021 10:44 AM

Just two days ago at 4:00 AM our television started up, freaked us out as it woke us from sleep when we heard loud voices. I was ready to grab my gun. Thankfully I didn't hear the theme music from Twilight Zone. I don't know of any setting on the TV or the remote that will turn on the TV at a certain time.

SANDRAJANE 03-05-2021 10:51 AM

Ours has a small red shut off button on bottom. You turn it off before putting it back on the floor charger. If we forget, it starts cleaning the house at the times set on it.. We named ours ET!

davem4616 03-05-2021 10:52 AM

I've heard that the early models of Alexa can get overloaded at times and there's a backlog of requests that takes time to work through....

go to hardware company of your choice. Buy 2 small kill switches
install one in both receptacles
then plug in your equipment
no more patrick swayze for you.

That happened to my TV several times: very loud and the middle of the night. It stopped when I changed cable companies.

I named my Roomba, "She-Bot," and "she" has been very good to us!

I would also suggest watching "Automata" with Antonio Banderas on Amazon Prime. I could help you understand the depth and breadth of the problem.

And for those science buffs and deep thinkers......There are only a FEW elements that have 4 electrons in their outer ring - one is carbon, of which all animals are made - and another is silicon, of which all digital circuits components are made. Another commonality between animals and Roomba and etc is that before the 1st animal cells - the earth had clouds of electrical disturbances happening. That electricity MAY (?) have sparked (humor intended) the evolution (swear word to some) of the animal cell. So, within the circuits of a smart home or a Roomba, you have the raw material for life and also the electrical energy to jump-start it. Live long and keep a wary eye on your SMART phone. Who will end up the master and who the servant?

"Automata with Antonio Banderas on Prime is better.

villagetinker 03-05-2021 10:58 PM

OP, a few questions/comments: Does your TV use a fire stick or similar, and if so does this device turn on your TV? If so you may want to check for updates and make sure there are no extraneous settings. Do you have Alexa or a similar voice activated device in your house, and if so is it linked to either the TV or the Roomba, if so try disconnecting and see if this stops the random operations.

i like the movie interstellar. Gravity can affect time hence time can be controlled and or manipulated. It's all explained under time distillation.
