Recycling

Is there recycling ? This is the 1st time in over 40 years I have not.

Dan9871 03-12-2021 12:56 PM

Everything you put out in the trash is recycled here.

We used to recycle, did for years. It was a bit different than what we were used to; they never did separate plastics, paper, etc. here, but they announced there was no real market/profit for recycling any more, so we now can put most anything except the obvious (like batteries, paint cans, medical/needles, things that really have no disposal place without a long auto drive or storing for a year and waiting for a disposal "event" somewhere. All other garbage, lawn waste, what used to be recycle (like water bottles, glass jars, etc.) are all put into bags (any kind, any color, no longer require lawn waste bags or clear plastic for the paper and plastic, anything goes now) and as we understand, it is all just incinerated without any toxic emissions to the air ! Amazing what science has accomplished !

there used to be, but that was changed in Oct

merrymini 03-13-2021 06:41 AM

No toxins? Well maybe. I think that china no longer accepts recycling so the bottom fell out if the market. There is, supposedly, a recycling plant being planned in Tampa in the near future. I think it is unconscionable that glass and aluminum are being dumped. Aluminum and glass are both terrific items for recycling. I keep my aluminum cans to bring to recycling. Probably not worth much but also keep my glass jars for storage of food items. There is still stuff that goes to the dump, even after it is burned.

La lamy 03-13-2021 06:52 AM

Some of us still have recycling. I'm in Orange Blossom.

Dlbonivich 03-13-2021 07:19 AM

They separate out metals and burn the rest for power. No one should believe anything that went to China was recycled fooled. They dump it. So does India. Really has never been a market for most recycling except metal ever. My husband ran recycling companies for 30 years.

This is the first year where we no longer separate things. We did have it for years. The change is big for me since we moved from Connecticut where we began Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.
They say this new technology doesn’t need separation, and since there was no real business developing recycling businesses, they burned it. I hate it.

TandHSTAR@AOL.com 03-13-2021 07:37 AM

There is not recycling any more. Sad but true. All trash, including yard waste goes out on your trash pick up daay.

tuccillo 03-13-2021 07:44 AM

Trash is now being recycled into electricity by Covanta. I believe they are extracting metal from the trash.

NO, everything is burned .

Duppman 03-13-2021 08:04 AM

This my first year here and it still feels strange not to recycle. Different program here.

Boston1945 03-13-2021 08:25 AM

The U.S. recycles 31.5% of its waste, making it 7th in the world for recycling.
Thank God we don,t live in Germany. The average home has at least five distinct color-coded bins for different kinds of waste. These include bins for packaging, paper, glass, compost, and trash.

aldeana 03-13-2021 08:36 AM

All waste (garbage, recyclables, yard waste) goes to Covanta in Okahumpka, where it is incinerated indoors, and the heat converted to energy, then sold. Just Google Covanta and get a virtual tour of the plant. And for info on Villages services, always get it from the horse's mouth: Village Community Development Districts

Tankerrich 03-13-2021 08:43 AM

Enjoy it.

all items put out for trash is burned. I take anything to recycle to the sumter county solid waste. I take cans, bottles, newspapers and cardboard there for free.

dan, you are inncorrect. Anything you put out for trash is burned, even the yard waste.

Linda Taranto 03-13-2021 09:32 AM

About 6 months ago, there was an article describing why everything was now collected as trash. Trash is taken to a new plant that separates everything into trash or recycle. There was a wonderful video of the plant (I think it's in Oklawaha). I will try to find that video and post it here.

Well there is the real story about recycling. I found out that the things we were recycling (in the Federal gov't) were being sent to the dump. We had federal employees at $100K sorting out recycled paper that was sent to the dump so not only did we pay these high salaries to do the sorting, we also paid more for the "recycling" which was never done. That's recycling for you! But it makes people "feel good".
ps That's your tax dollars at work for another boondoggle.

neither glass or aluminum burns and is pulled from the waste stream before heading to the incinerator.

Do you know what they do with the cans and bottles? I had a long email exchange with someone in charge at Covanta last year and specifically asked about glass, which doesn't burn. He said there was no market for recycling glass, which seems crazy to me since it's SO recyclable. I always feel especially bad about putting bottles into the trash. I assume glass just goes into landfill somewhere. :(

Linda Taranto 03-13-2021 10:04 AM

So, I couldn't find the exact video I watched many months ago, but found a youtube Video that is similar to what I saw; I thought it was pretty amazing. Click on this link: Virtual Tour of a Recycling Center - ReCommunity - YouTube

Why do folks think that trash to energy is not recycling? IMHO, it most certainly is recycling. Energy is a wonderful end result for all of our trash. I LOVE the fact that I do not have to separate anything any more and I can put yard waste in the same bag as kitchen trash. WIn Win in my book.

I recycled for many years as most people in the US have done. It took me all of, oh, about 3 minutes to get used to not having to separate trash. Easy peasy.

coffeebean 03-13-2021 10:08 AM

Covanta virtual tour. This will explain how our trash is recycled to energy.......

Yes, all waste is burned with the exception of glass but it is converted to energy in the process. Isn't that what recycling is all about. Take the trash and turn it into something else that is useful. What am I missing here?????

Skunky1 03-13-2021 10:21 AM

China has decided to quit accepting our trash that was mixed in with the recycles

We were recycling until this past year, then were told “everything goes in the trash so no need to separate your cardboard, cans or bottles.” Apparently they did away with recycling here. I think that’s such a negative move for the environment. I still separate our cans & cardboard etc, because I’ve been used to doing that my entire adult life everywhere I’ve lived.

It is recycled into energy, not open burned. Metals are separated and sold. The leftover ash/chink is sold and added to building materials used for roads etc. Checkout the technology. Waste-to-Energy - Covanta

Joorn59 03-13-2021 11:01 AM

All of our trash here is sent to a plant in Georgia that burns it and creates electricity

Really? Im in country club hills and haven't seen a recycling truck for months. I believe any recycling you put out us just picked up by trash truck. If someone know differently, i would like to know. Hate putting out stuff i know should be recycled in the trash.

Covanta, where our trash is converted to energy, has regular inspections by independent, regulator-approved, third parties. Their emissions are below what is required by the Clean Air Act. Check out the technology.

I agree that it is TOO bad that glass is not being recycled. It must be TRUE that any single company can NOT make a PROFIT recycling glass. When "free enterprise" does NOT have a solution to a problem, IS not that the exact time when GOVERNMENT should step in to "do the right thing". After all, 100 years ago the US Government paid various oil companies to drill and explore for oil because it was the RIGHT thing to do. We as taxpayers are still paying unnecessarily to oil companies. So, I know there is money available to do the RIGHT thing today and help subsidize GLASS recycling.

You might Well accept fossil fuel, they will and “ I repeat will never go way in 1000 years”. Why you ask, every thing solar, wind, or hydroelectric made with or out of fossil fuels. Even nuclear made from fossil fuels. Electric can’t be produced without fossil fuels why? Cause everything that makes electricity made out of fossil fuels. Every quarrying can’t exists I this day with without fossil fuels.
