Looking for TV Series to Watch
I'm ready to find something new and just looking for some input. I'll even consider older series, but ideally it would be something a bit newer than a couple of my favorite shows which I mention below, maybe something from 2010 or later. And having a number of seasons "in the can" would be very nice too...
I like detective shows and such, but I am open to any type of series if it's interesting enough. To give you a clue to my tastes, in the past I've liked Monk, The Mentalist, some NCIS (the original is all I've seen), sitcoms and various other types of shows. I rarely get hooked on pure drama. Monk and The Mentalist which I mentioned above had something in common...very good detective plots with really fun main characters and a humorous slant in every episode. Okay, I'm open to suggestions. Again, I will consider any show if it's good. |
Breaking Bad was one of the highest rated series ever.
|
The Blacklist would lead the pack for me.
The second would be Chicago P.D. Chicago Fire and Chicago Med. Third would be Roseanne, The Conners, The Munsters, Hogan's Heroes, MASH. Sorry some of them don't meet your request but they kept me off the streets during the pandemic. |
SouthLAnd on HBOMAX is 4 seasons long and I believe close in quality and story to The Shield or The Wire.
Red Oaks on Amazon Prime 3 seasons. You might also enjoy Godfather of Harlem and Condor on EPIX. Comcast charges $5.99 per month for EPIX. |
Besides the regular channels what else do you have?
For example do you have prime video? |
Wholesome series on Netflix: "Anne with an E," "Heartland."
Doc Martin, Longmire, Better Call Saul, Ozark, Hell on Wheels, Halt and Catch Fire, Virgin River, Godless, Sense8(not for the old school people), Everwood, Jericho... |
Not sure where you’d find it, but we really enjoyed “The Closer”.
|
“Startup”
3 seasons on Netflix |
Three to consider:
Magnum P.I. Bull Blacklist (previously mentioned above) |
Bosch
|
If you have access to Netflix, I can definitely recommend the series "The Kominsky Method". It stars Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin. It is about an actor who is an acting coach who would fit right in with The Villages crowd. There are 3 seasons with 8 episodes each and my wife and I have really enjoyed watching it. And in almost every episode, there is an "old" actor in a cameo role that you kind of recognize but have to watch to credits to be sure (like said "older")

Thanks for the input so far. Just a couple of additional bits of info regarding my request...
In reply to a previous question or two...I can access almost any show. Yes, I have Prime Video. So please forward your recommendations regardless of where you might have watched them. Also, I do prefer higher resolution video. It doesn't have to be 4k or anything like that, but some of the older shows that are so grainy I probably wouldn't be able to get into. That's one of the reasons I requested something not toooo old in my op, like 2010ish or later. Again, thanks for input so far. Keep the recommendations coming. |
Via Prime
We have liked Hanna Bosch Vikings Amazing Mrs Meisal |
OP,
From what you said about your favorites, I think you might like the BBC’s New Tricks. Three retired detectives come out of retirement to solve cold cases. These “old” guys can be a bit set in their ways — which are not always according to accepted procedures — but they get the job done. The series ran from 2003 to 2015. (We are not through all those seasons yet.) I like the series because you get a murder mystery without the gore and some witty dialogue and interesting glimpses into the detectives’ backstories. Amanda Redman is their boss. She keeps them in line — sort of — well — not really — because they pretty much do whatever they need to do. - - - I recently found another British series starring Amanda Redman, The Good Karma Hospital. It’s not a mystery series though. It started in 2017. I am watching it currently and really like it. Wonderful scenery and cultural insights, too. - - - One of the funniest ones we have watched lately is Ted Lasso. I had put off watching it — although people kept telling me I had to. But I did not know anything about soccer so I thought I would not like it. Anyway — loved it — and added more British slang to my vocabulary. - - - Someone has mentioned The Kominsky Method. Michael Douglas stars in it and Kathleen Turner is in the last season as his ex-wife. It’s about aging with snappy dialogue. Liked it a lot. Boomer |
I liked Monk, The Mentalist, and NCIS, so perhaps we're on the same wavelength. I haven't seen all the shows mentioned above, but agree Bosch, Godless, Longmire, The Closer (and spin-off Major Crimes) are excellent. Current fare, Mare of Easttown on HBO is quite good.
|
Also Endeavor and DC Morse are good british detective series.

Mare of Easttown is an excellent "who done it"
The Good Place is a supper silly comedy/satire about heaven and hell. |
Bosch is great. Coming back for a 7th. Southland just started but good. Ted Lasso is another. Found it funny and entertaining.
|
HBO
DEADWOOD, and THE WIRE |
Vikings just started back on the History channel.

Foreign shows
If you like detective shows with a twist, wait for Netflix or Amazon to stream “The Sniffer” again for free. It’s a Russian-Ukrainian show, and I think it’s interesting to see their take on detective dramas. Another out-on-a-limb suggestion is HBO’s “Beforeigners,” which is Norwegian. May be a bit too much nudity for some, as there is a caveman who likes to walk around without a stitch on. (Yes, a detective show with a caveman.)

We are watching Gilmore Girls. There are 7 seasons on Netflix. It’s a light drama with very tongue in cheek wit. It doesn’t have much sex or foul language but it’s entertaining. Like all shows it takes a few episodes to get to know the characters etc but if you decide to try it I hope you you enjoy it.

Try Nurse Jackie, The Durells of Cofu, The Republic of Doyle, Heartland, Hart of Dixie, Sons of Anarchy, Peaky Blinders, Last Tango in Halifax, Lucifer, Hell on Wheels, Longmire, Yellowstone, Doc Martin, and there has to be something there you will like.

New trick seconded .

I liked Castle, which was similar to the Mentalist with a civilian, in this case a best selling crime novelist paired with a detective. Nathan Filipina from Castle now stars in the Rookie which is also a crime drama with quite a bit of humor.
|
You could also try the beauty and the baker which is a limited series. Some people also like sci-fi is a series now called Jupiter also very interesting with Josh Duhamel. I can go backwards on YouTube to the '50s to some of the very nice cop shows Burke's law was fun, danger man, secret agent, dragnet, all the Colombo's, you can look for poirot as well or anything by Agatha Christie
|
It was also a very interesting series either on Netflix or prime but it was in Spanish with English subtitles about time travel it had a lot of history about Spain. But it's not for prudes

Not in any order but pretty good shows
- Bosch - Yellowstone - The Wire - Seal Team - FBI - The Neighborhood |
New:
The Rookie Bull Blue Bloods Chicago PD..(can get rough) Older cop shows Castle Closer Major Crimes For light murder movies I like the Hallmark Murder Mystery. There are about six different series to watch like Murder She Bake, Aurora Teagarden Mysteries and Chronicle Mysteries |
We watch most of the shows mentioned but “Queen of the South” was really good too. This last year we watched reruns of Game. Of Thrones and The Sopranos and Breaking Bad and Hell on Wheels and Sons of Anarchy and Dexter to name a few. They were just like new again because we forget so much of how the story went.

BLOODLINE on Netflix

For detective shows, I highly recommend Broadchurch, and English show that takes you through an entire season with one case. For regular series, The Kominsky Method, Schitts Creek, and Doc Martin are comedies and all hysterical. Another English detective series that is good is Grantchester. For network series, we like Blue Bloods with Tom Selleck.
