Plumbing scam

My 83 year old uncle recently moved to The Villages after the death of his wife. He bought a two year old villa. Last week, the handle that flushes the toilet fell off and he wasn't able to figure out how to put it back on. So he went to the phonebook and called PAT THE PLUMBER. They came out and told him that The Villages installs cheap plumming and he needed to have some of his plumming fixed. This included both bathrooms and all of the faucets in all the sinks.

They charged him $1,200.00 to do this. They scared him into believing that unless this was done, his plumming would all break.

If you want to use PAT THE PLUMBER for your project, go right ahead, but I would not recommend them to anyone at all. They clearly took advantage of an old man who lives by himself.

This is not just another one of those stories that circulate thru The Villages, this is the truth and I can prove it to you.

Thank you for reading this and if you are looking for a plummer to do any services in your home, I would NEVER recommend them.

zcaveman 10-06-2010 07:20 PM

I believe Pat the Plumber has been mentioned more than a couple times on this site - and never in a good way.

elevatorman 10-06-2010 07:49 PM

If you think this was a scam report it to Crime against Seniors.

http://www.seniorsvscrime.com/

Bryan 10-07-2010 04:45 AM

In addition to Seniors Vs Crime (and you should do that), you should report this company to the Better Business Bureau of Central Florida and to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Consumer Services. Both reports can be made online. Contact the BBB at http://centralflorida.bbb.org/Find-Business-Reviews/ and contact the Department of Agriculture at http://csapp.800helpfla.com/cspublic...esssearch.aspx. If we don't make the "bad guys" well know, others will get scammed by them also.

Thank heavens for TOTV.

It is a quick, effective way to get the word out when the word needs to get out.:eclipsee_gold_cup:

Someone give us the name of a plumber that you recommend.

missypie 10-07-2010 06:54 AM

Very sad story. There is a place for people that take advantage of our older folks!

zcaveman 10-07-2010 07:09 AM

I always use Kiley an Son. Not expensive, efficient and does a great job.

I agree. Have used Kiley & Son several times and highly recommend.

tom60 10-07-2010 09:11 AM

I agree kiley and sons is a very good honest company. I used them once and they are the only ones i will ever call again.

colleenj 10-07-2010 09:38 AM

I agree about Kiley and Sons. I have used them for several things and they are reasonable, come quickly in an emergency, are professional and do a great job. Would not use anyone else.

Carla B 10-07-2010 10:07 AM

I marked a big "X" across Pat the Plumber's ad in the yellow pages as a reminder not to call him.

We know how to watch out for each other. TOTV is great. Now Kiley needs to advertise on here and TH will be happy too.

jannd228 10-07-2010 11:28 AM

agree

and was told yesterday by Talk Host it is very affordable, $42/month

Niels 10-07-2010 11:34 AM

Based on recommendations on TOTV I used Kiley and Son when we had a small plumbing problem that was not covered under warranty. It happened late on a Friday afternoon. They came within an hour, the plumber was very professional and I thought their charge was reasonable.

swrinfla 10-07-2010 03:24 PM

I used Pat the Plumber about a year ago. It should have been an inexpensive (service charge plus $10 part, maybe) job, but ended up near $500. At first, I accepted it, mostly because it was something that needed doing, "now."

But, later, I thought I'd been ripped off. Now, I'm pretty d***ed sure I was.

Last week, I called Kiley & Sons. No emergency, just would like a few minor things done a.s.a.p. The pleasant young lady on the 'phone promised that someone would come that afternoon!

A nice young man, well over 6' tall, came exactly as promised, did the several things I needed, and was gone within 90 minutes. Less than $200.

I will definitely call Kiley should I need a plumber in the future.

:beer3:

P.S.: I mention the guy's height because it reminded me of the numerous times when I tried to do my own plumbing (back "in the day!") and always wished I could unzip myself at the waist! My guy agreed! He couldn't imagine that my former regular plumber (third generation) was well over 300#!

definitely will put this under PLUMBER in my phone book. When you really need a plumber, you don't have time to search for a name and number. Great that we have TOTV.

Laura 10-08-2010 02:13 PM

thanks everyone for your advise and especially your referral for Kiley and Sons.

mikeandnancy1112 10-08-2010 03:50 PM

Emery Dillard is wonderful. We had him put a kitchen faucet on and only charged us 60.00. Also, our friend had him too. He is very reasonable. His number is 352-267-2084. I think he is a villager but not sure.

The Homeowners say in their lawsuit that Roto-Rooter has a business practice when responding to minor customer problems of giving those customers false information and grossly exaggerating the need for repairs.

What is the phone number for Kiley & Sons? Thanks

I myself wouldnt use Kiley. I needed repair on my irrigation system and when I saw hin trying to use a shovel to try to put together the solinoids female and male together with a shovel it buckled and split the female ends of the solinoid causing me to have to call them a few days later. They told me they were not responsible for second party parts. Problem is the glue dried quickly causing the parts to freeze part way in. Using a shovel was rather a primitive way to do it causing the pipes and solinoids to buckle and crack. This cost me 2 visits . I agree that they are good in some things but stay away when it come to irrigation systems.

candymc5 04-30-2012 01:23 PM

Laura there is something that seniors can do about that. I forget the name, but it is on 466 I think, they act as an advocate for seniors for things like this. Someone on TOTV has maybe heard of it and give you the directions. You can call the Villages Sales Office for their name too. Sorry this happened to your uncle.

So true about recommending a plumber is a serious no no. If you get a bad one contact the Better Business Bureau. My plumber had me get a piece at Lowes as a favor and after the fact told me it was not warrantied. When I witnessed how they lack supplies like small shovels I was able to loan my tools. My only regret is trying to accomindate and help such as drinks food and obtaining supplies to make the job easier.
Please use caution about recommendations also, especially the one stated in here.

We stand behind our material and workman ship to the fullest extent. We have been in the same location for 25 years. We are not just a phone number and a truck that shows up when you call. We are a respectful and reputable company. When a homeowner chooses to provide parts for the service we do not deny because it is that homeowners choice but urge against it. But we do not warranty those parts. Just the same as any other reputable contractor. We repair irrigation on a daily basis. We provide and install professional grade parts that the manufacturers stand behind as well as we do.

Watch out for this one. I get reprimended for calling the BBB for mediation. He is not willing to eyewitness the mistakes that are made. I have invited him and the plumber to view the problem and he did not take my word for it. Being a nice guy that I was I asked if he wanted me to go to Lowes for a part and he said yes. Lets face it when the glue dries on pvc when the item is not intact one shouldnt force it on with a shovel and crack the item. This guy didnt even have a small shovel to dig it out and I supplied him one. So he told me I should have known better to get a solenoid switch, supplied drinks, and assistance. I dont get it really but hes real aggravated I am on here writing about it. His article doesnt apply to what really happened. I did give him the benefit to defend himself on here after I told him what I did on this site. He tends to get angry when something goes wrong. Watch out for this one. Maybe this event will make it on Good Morning America also like the last complaint I had. Folks, personally Im glad we have blogs, facebook, youtube. Senior citizens need protection where ever they can. Sadly it is completely false about When a homeowner chooses to provide parts for the service we do not deny because it is that homeowners choice but urge against it. The urging the customer against it is a complete lie and humiliation for me trying to help because he says I should have known better. THAT IS THE TRUTH !!! I have used this plumber before and has done great work inside and outside my house. When it comes to irrigation dont be friendly and assist to make it easier for them. I really didnt appreciate that particular immature statement.

I know and never a mistake right? Come on bogie.......Go ahead and give them a call then. The owner was never there to see what happened and absolutelt refused to come down to my house to better explain what happened. Does 25 years give you a free ticket to do no wrong.

I have recommended Kiley and Sons for plumbing work. They did a terrific job for us. :-) Just another satisfied customer reporting in.

Villageshooter 05-01-2012 10:50 PM

you should call PAT!

this thread was about Pat the plumber! you might give him a call,,, but i gotta say this,,there are a ton of folks that dont like pat,, and like the other guy,, sometimes you have think,,, just move on!,,, sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and gets real lubed up!

silvertoken 05-02-2012 07:34 PM

Plumbing possibly, irrigation never, call a irrigation company much cheaper.
A few weeks ago I may of agreed with you who praise this company. Otherwise be prepared to lend his workers a garden shovel, The boss cant aford to give them one. On his website there is a Better Business Logo on it. He sure gets mad when you use it,

silvertoken 05-02-2012 08:12 PM

My next door neighbor came over to observe Kiley working on my irrigation system and asked how much it would cost to fix his and without looking at the system he was qouted $300-$400 . This shocked him and he called Rainbow Irrigation and the job was done for $92. They even had all the parts and tools also. So please if you think Kiley is cheap on irrigation? One great thing about my neighborhood is we are like family, they taught me how to fight back by calling POA and activities director ending these circulars they send out in our community monthly paper.

s_tacey99 05-03-2012 09:42 PM
