Veterans Day Flags
 

I had to make a short drive thru the Villages this morning. I was saddened to see that less than one in ten homes were displaying the American Flag honoring our Veterans, especially those who died in war. Why is this? Are the flags at $1.50 each too expensive, is it too much work to stick a half dozen curb flags in the ground or is it simply people don't care anymore ?

Stop and ask the houses without flags.

Haven't seen a mind-reader on ToTV yet.

Lots of reasons.
 

First, people still care, while a few never did.
Still a lot of snowbirds yet to arrive equals no flags?
Lots of renters not in the loop equals no flags.
Lots of full timers, many who are veterans themselves, on vacation and away from home equals no flags.
Some prefer to keep their appreciation, patriotism and prayers personal and private, equals no flags.
Some appreciate the thought but resent the Chinese made flags used most often to demonstrate that American patriotism, like Chinese made lapel pins worn to show how patriotic one is. Again, no flags.
So, just because a house is not ringed in flags, don't assume the owners don't care. There are many reasons that might not be apparent why flags are not displayed by some. My service time, like all my military brothers and sisters, was about keeping America safe and free and one of those freedoms was the right to decide for themselves how to honor those who served or died for our country.

Are you sure the homes are in residence?

Plenty in Sunset Pointe. We have 15-20 along driveway and curb, plus 30ft. pole.

The possibility of rain might have been a factor. I put mine out after the rain but it appears like it still might shower again.

flags are always nice...what's even better IMHO... on Veterans Day go up to a vet and thank them for their service

There is absolutely no correlation between one NOT showing a flag (for ANY reason or at ANY time) and one not caring for America, soldiers or mom's apple pie. Do you also believe not wearing a religious symbol makes one an atheist? I have a folded flag from my father's military funeral on my wall but don't have 50 all around my property? SO WHAT ? Don't judge others when you have no idea what is on their mind or in their heart.

I’m a multi tour combat wounded veteran , calling out people for not waving a flag is as bogus as a used car dealer showing what a patriot he is with a 100 flags on the lot, I don’t wear a hat or a t shirt with my veterans I D on but if it makes people happy that’s fine . I put a couple of flags out for all the holidays but I don’t have a flag pole my choice. I didn’t need a parade or a pat on the back and the only people I sought respect from were the guys who fought with me ,because there RESPECT WAS ALL THAT MATTERED getting it from strangers may make you feel good but I could care less FYI I go the day before Veterans Day to cemetery and put some flowers on a vets grave , I don’t need to be in some photo op and just like praying in private many of us are maybe more private in our patriotism OUR CHOICE

My uncle, my grandfather, and several of my great-uncles and (now long dead) cousins fought for my right to NOT display the flag if I don't want to. If you have a problem with that, then just drive right on past my house and don't look.

Now my question is how do these patriotic folks take care of those flags?
I've seen so many touching the ground, fallen over, torn and stained and not displayed with honor.

I've also seen bundles of those $1.50 dollar flags sitting on top of people's garbage waiting for pickup. What might their excuse be?

My flag was flying proudly as were many others in the Village of Charlotte.

My husband served in the Marines and he is proud to have done so. Just because we did not put a flag in our yard does not mean he loves this country or Marines any less. It is his choice whether or not to put a flag in the yard.

Not sure where you drove, but many homes have there backyards facing many roads that non residents use to cut thru our towns.
Most people display there flags in the front of there homes. People where walking thru our neighborhoods putting flags in our front yards. This is why I live here, we care,we appreciate, we honor in our own way.

+1 - 100% just because there are no flags don’t mean that people aren’t patriotic or don’t care.

Too often, I see those flags touching the ground, so I don't display them. Having a flag touch the ground is a terrible thing.

I fly “THE COLORS” with PRIDE. I personally chose to do one at HALF MAST with extra HONERS going out to all who died but were never found. I placed a sign along this that reads “MIA”. I simply want to honor all in PRAYER. Hope this doesn’t offend anyone

I think it's very uplifting to see flags in many front yards for all the patriotic holidays, especially Veterans Day, Memorial Day and the 4th of July if possible. I also think that if one person in the neighborhood puts them out, the rest will follow. It's catching!!

How wonderful that so many people added flags to their yards! Many people chose other ways to celebrate our service men and women. We are truly blessed to live in America and to honor those who protect our freedom.

You should have driven through Caroline Village. The streets were lined soon as you come in the gate; plus, in personal neighborhoods.

The term “the Colors” refers to the flag.

Thousands in Pennecamp. Almost every house in the 'Lakesiders' area.

You must not have driven through Bonita. Most homes display flags. On our street, neighbors make sure to place flags on behalf of out of town owners.

I don’t figure flags make a patriot. I f you want to impress me with your patriotism, show me your DD 214!

I am a veteran who doesn't feel the need to display my patriotism. The indiscriminate displays of American flags in people's yards actually gets on my nerves. What does having a dozen little flags lining your yard have to do with supporting the vets? I usually just lurk in the forum and keep my opinions to myself, but for some reason this particular post rankled me.

I love to rankle people. Stop by my house anytime and you’d probably get downright p!ssed off. :1rotfl:
