What is golf car passing etiquette?

I move to the side when I see a golf car approaching me from behind and wave them on. I notice a couple of times I needed to pass some slower golf cars in front of me for about half a mile. I put on my left blinker, proceed to pass them on a straight-away, notice sometimes they increase their speed. I always wave and say thank you as I pass. Today a guy swerved left a little so I honked once quickly. I put on my right blinker to merge back. He honked his horn because I was passing him. I noticed he had a drink (alcoholic?) in his hand. I don't know if it was alcoholic but per chance?

I hate the slow drivers that feel the need to put the petal to the metal when you try to pass them. It’s the only time I wish my cart went over 20 MPH.

fdpaq0580 11-12-2021 06:34 PM

In no hurry.

Personally, I seldom pass anyone. I'm even ok with going slower to avoid passing someone. I'm retired and never in a hurry. If someone wants to pass me, I will pull right as far as possible and slow down a bit, once they begin their pass. This gives them a little more room and they can get past quickly.

Laker14 11-12-2021 06:37 PM

proper etiquette demands that you ride the rear bumper for at lest 1/2 mile, then when you decide to pass, raise middle finger on way by. When re-entering lane, cut it as close as you dare, then hit brakes.

TNLAKEPANDA 11-12-2021 06:40 PM

It is Bumper Car Season…. Enjoy

Calisport 11-12-2021 07:43 PM

OK. Now I know one reason the snow bird season is not pleasant.

Kenswing 11-12-2021 07:46 PM

If the guy in front of me is doing anywhere near 20mph I just stay a safe distance behind. If they're in the 15mph range and I have a long distance to travel I might consider passing. I think in the six months we've been here I've passed two carts that were going real slow. Other than that, I figure I'm retired. I'll slow down and enjoy the great scenery along the cart paths.

fdpaq0580 11-12-2021 09:23 PM

Huh?

Raising the middle finger as they pass? Is that what they call "virtue signaling"??

npwalters 11-12-2021 09:30 PM

etiquette for passing another golf cart is much the same as for a car passing another car on a 2 lane road. Just use caution and go for it if you are noticeably faster.

Garywt 11-12-2021 11:29 PM

If someone is passing me I don’t change a thing in what I am doing. I rarely pass anyone. If someone is below 10 mph I might but for the most part I feel it is unnecessary to pass anyone. Yes it can lead to the ride taking longer but chances are they are turning soon anyway.

I think you might have passed me before.

Laker14 11-13-2021 06:05 AM

But seriously folks.... I don't like a faster driver on my butt, so when the oncoming lane is clear, and I know the driver behind wants to pass, I move as far right as I can, so he/she can see, and when they start to pass I slow down a bit to make it easier for them to safely get around me. Doesn't cost me a thing to let them go.

When I am overtaking a slower cart, it really depends upon how much slower they are, and how easy and safe it is to pass, and how long of a trip I have ahead of me. I can go 18 instead of 20. I am seldom in a hurry. I prefer to leave a few minutes earlier than absolutely necessary, and go with the flow. But if I want to pass, I stay back so I can see around the cart in front of me, and when I make my move I just go. I've never had to drag race the cart I was passing. Usually they are going as fast as their cart will go anyway. That's why I need to pass them.

Yep, that time of the year again. And even worse since lots are coming back after a 1 or 2 year wait.

What great advice! If everyone here lived like this it would be a much better place. :bigbow:

I see the typical snowbird bashing here...much of the frustration is the frogs not having TV all to themselves (spoiled?). Remember those snowbirds pay taxes and amenities all year long. YOU'RE WELCOME

Unless they are renting. Then you can thank the owner of the property.

I remember several years ago renting a Village golf cart, top speed 16 mph had a train of unhappy golf carts behind me. I don't pass carts that are driving at a reasonable speed, but i will pass someone who is driving at bicycle speed.

Dee Smith 11-13-2021 07:22 AM

For some reason my golf cart goes very slow. I hope people pass me! I don’t want a new cart and I don’t want to hold anyone up.

thevillages2013 11-13-2021 07:42 AM

Blow and go! Finger is optional 😀

Maybe a slight hill.
Maybe a slow accelerator.
Maybe they just realized they were holding up traffic.

Enjoy the Journey.

What is golf car passing etiquette?

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be any. However, if you are driving at 12 mph, you get what you deserve:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

I might be one of those you hate. I have an under powered cart and I have the pedal to the metal all the time. It goes 20 mph on the level. Slower going up inclines. Faster going down. Nothing intentional. That's simply just the way my cart performs.

I hear you! It happened just yesterday, somebody ahead of me was driving 16mph on the straightaways, slowed to 12 on mild curves and to 9 on sharp curves. he came do a dead stop at the ENTRANCES to tunnels. (got stuck behind him for a while). Then, when we merged onto Pinellas place I pulled out to pass him and he all of a sudden was going well in excess of 20. Conclusion---there was nothing wrong with his cart, but his driving skills were less that zero.

These are the same bozo drivers that are left lane Louie's on the interstate chugging along at 60 in the far left lane, but when you go to pass them you have to compete with them going in excess of 90. Fine, whatever, on an interstate, but on a 2 lane road quite dangerous---they go 40 in a 55 zone but speed up to 70 when you go to pass.

Turn it up and drive it like a car rather than jus smash & go. It comes in handy.

NoMo50 11-13-2021 08:09 AM

Sadly, some folks are in a perpetual hurry, with an "it's all about me" attitude. Driving in cars is no different. Who hasn't been on the Turnpike, with cruise control set at 75mph, and had folks blow by like you were wired to a tree?

tedquick 11-13-2021 08:13 AM

". . wired to a tree. . ." Love that expression. A new one to me. Thanks for the smiles.

Obrienx4 11-13-2021 08:24 AM

We seldom pass anyone unless they are going exceptionally slow, this is not a hurried lifestyle and I respect my elders as I am a “new kid on the block”. Have been here 4 years and would have missed a lot of wonderful experiences if I was busy passing others by.

noslices1 11-13-2021 08:25 AM

I would have to say that probably 75% of the carts in The Villages can go faster than 20MPH, so the passers, pass 20 mph carts like they are standing still.

75% of Villagers slice, you are in the minority twice.

My parish priest in TN referred to it as "half a peace sign"!:)

It has nothing to do with snowbirds. Some new folks make mistakes taking carts onto roads etc.. When traveling some folks are just rude, both passing and being passed. I handle each situation accordingly, if when I attempt a pass and they speed up i just lag behind at their pace. If someone is passing me I slow and let them go. There are many here that feel they should set the pace for everyone. If thats their style so be it. If they wanna be rude, I just smile and let them be rude. They are only upsetting themselves.

Burgy 11-13-2021 08:57 AM

want to pass?

I will help if I am going slow for some reason but if I'm going 20mph I don't feel the need to help a passer unless there is danger ahead

Black Beauty 11-13-2021 08:58 AM

I pull over if someone wants to pass. I'm usually doing about 18

frank1975 11-13-2021 09:09 AM

When the snowbirds are here it's a FREE-FOR-ALL!!! No rules or law followed. Just push them off the trail. Half are drunk and they won't notice anything.

Waltdisney4life 11-13-2021 09:20 AM

Speed limit is 19.9 miles an hour if you’re doing 12 or 13 miles an hour you should be expected to be passed. I’m not telling you how slow you can drive you can drive whatever speed you want but if I want to maintain 19.9 miles an hour I have that right to pass you.

Thought about it, but don’t have a speedometer and like knowing I can keep the pedal floored and not exceed the legal limit. I like to keep the cart basic and simple, except for the seats. You can’t have seats that are too comfortable.

Draw every club except for the dam driver, which slices. Either time for a lesson or to get one of those fancy drivers that can be adjusted to a draw bias? Oh well, the slices don’t roll as far OB.
