Internet supplier can be different in different locations in the villages, so if you know which village you will be in then you can get a specific answer.

Why pay for a gate chip? Just get one of those stick-on pockets for the back of your cell phone, and put your gate card in there. When you need to go through a gate, hold the back of your phone to the window (or hold it outside the window if you don't mind doing some actual work), and all gates will open just fine. You can even use it with multiple vehicles - no need for special installation, or paying for devices. Bonus: you get into the habit of keeping your phone handy in case of emergency.

Total cost: $1.29 or it can even be $0 if you get a free one at insurance company booths during craft fairs.

retiredguy123 03-06-2022 04:17 PM

My SUV has a groove in the door where you can place the regular gate card and only half of the card will show. I covered it with a piece of black cardboard, so it is almost invisible. It doesn't interfere with the opening and closing of the window. I just drive up to the gate and the gate will open without the need to open window. It works everywhere except the old section where the gate sensor is too high. Give it a try.

I just hold the card to the bottom of the window of my SUV without opening the window. Why would you need it attached to a phone? I would really like to get the chip in our side mirror. I pull close to the card reader already and I imagine I would not have to pull as close if the chip is in the mirror. The mirror sticks out farther than where the window sits.

Does this chip in the mirror work OK with SUVs?

Is this groove in your door on the inside of the door? Trying to picture in my mind how this will look.

I have it on my phone because my phone comes with me no matter which vehicle I'm driving, and I don't have to dig through a wallet or my purse to find the gate card. When we first moved in, I would have the card on the binder clip on the steering wheel of my golf cart, and forget to take it when I went into a store. I eventually realized - being absent-minded like that could result in someone who should NOT have a gate card, taking mine - while I had to pay for a new one.

Then I had it in my purse - but reaching for my purse, digging in to the "right" pocket to get it out, then hold it up, put it back in my purse, putting my purse back in the basket - well people are impatient. I got tired of being yelled at.

The phone sits perfectly in the cup holder of the golf cart AND in the change tray of my car, which is where I keep it when I'm driving. Easy to reach for, easy to see, easy to carry from one place to the next, easy to put in a pocket if I feel like walking and NOT bringing my pocketbook with me - my phone is always with me.

So it's a no-brainer to just have the card on the back of my phone.

The groove is just inside the window at the top of the door, and the top of the gate card almost touches the window glass, but doesn't affect the window operation. (see photo).

I understand how this method works for you but.........hubby and I have two gate cards between us. One stays in the visor of our main car and the other gate card remains in our other car. I have never needed to use a gate card in our golf cart so we don't keep one there. I have pushed a gate button when in our cart maybe only once.

Now I get it. Thanks for the photo. That is the exact location that I hold my card with the window closed. That "groove" is the space between the window and the car door. Thank goodness, the card can not slip down as there is not enough room for it to slip down into the door.

The black cardboard is on the inside of the car so the card is visible from the outside of the car?????

Just had another thought.......you say the operation of the window is not effected. How did you test it? I would be concerned that the card would slip down into the door. That was very brave of you to try it for the first time.

The black cardboard covers the card on both sides, making it almost invisible from outside the car because of the tinted window.

I don't know about other vehicles, but my window can be opened and closed, and the card does not go anywhere. It is in a separate groove on the door.

Ah. I live in the "historic" section. There's a golf cart path that leads to my dentist, several restaurants, Walmart, Aldi's, Lowe's, and Beall's (and soon BJs) that requires you to have a gate card and you can't drive a car through it. It doesn't have a red button, it's a private gate. We have 4 vehicles (not including my bicycle, which I ride often) and 2 gate cards.

And then my charging pad won't work...

Plus, my cell phone is typically in my pocket, so I'd have to dig it out to flash the gate...

Does this chip in the mirror work OK with SUVs?

Yes, it works fine in my wife's Acura MDX...

MDLNB 03-07-2022 05:32 AM

So, $20 is too steep to invest in the gate pass that installs inside the mirror?
I tried the idea of laying the gate card against the window and it never worked. Maybe I was doing it wrong. Who knows.
Now, I no longer need to open my window when going through a gate. It's inside the mirror and I drive slowly up to the sensor and it opens faster than when I have to stop, open the window and reach for the gate card. AND it saves on wear and tear on the window that no longer needs to be opened and closed. Nice that you do not need to get wet when it is raining, too.
I know one person that was laying his card against the window and it fell, sliding down INSIDE his door panel. It's still there.
The chip that mounts inside the mirror is a nice convenience. If you are trying to save a few bucks by trying a bunch of alternatives, they you probably can't afford to live in the Villages anyway. Just saying. The OP was asking for a phone number, not advice on how to save money on gate passes.

bowlingal 03-07-2022 05:46 AM

you really don't need the chip. It works fine right through the window, as long as you are lined up with the beam

The RFID chip in my gate card doesn't work in a silicone sleeve stuck on the back of my cell phone. I have to pry it out and wave it but it is a handy place to store the card. The gates are a joke. I much preferred sailing through when the gate(s) were ripped down every 2 days.

Ed Ingalls is the only one who is licensed and guarantees that the chip works. 217-433-1394. Please tell him Bev referred (he tracks for marketing purposes).

No hurry, since it doesn't make the gate work any faster...

But it DOES make it unnecessary to dig for your pass, and have to open your window in the rain...

Oh, and remember the thread about the woman who dropped her pass and was angry the gate attendant didn't help her find it? How many days did that one go on?

jjombrello 03-07-2022 11:06 AM

Prepare to pay with Directv. I dropped it because of cost and went with Xfinity. Have had good tv, streaming with Amazon firestick and using Utube TV. All the programming anyone would want, including local channels.

They don't let you go through any faster ... actually, for the most part it's slower. It's all priorities. Some of us like to spend hundreds on kiddie rides and some like to enjoy the "luxury" and convenience of spending $20-$50 to not have to open the window when it rains. :D Like many things in life it's not a necessity but simply something to do just "because you can." ;)

What type of license does he have? I looked him and his company up on the Florida license lookup website, and he does not appear to have a business license in Florida. His company has an LLC designation, but that is not a license, it is just a name registration. Can you please post his license number? Also, are you saying that no one else who installs gate chips will guarantee their work? I'm not saying that he doesn't do good work, but it is not fair to post inaccurate information about a business and their competition.

Yes, and what does it (a license) matter anyway other than to collect sales tax? When I moved here 5 years ago I was going to start a small computer repair business as I had in NJ as a sole prop. for 15 years as a "side" business. I filled out a 10 line form online, gave them an ID and my TIN and became "licensed" woohoo. I also filed for a business name (ficticous name application). Then I was required to send in "empty" sales tax forms every month or quarter which was a real PITA since I did no business. Since I wanted a fictitious name, ie. business name (same as I had in NJ) getting that required placing an advertisement in a newspaper using that name. Just wasn't worth the hassle so I went out of business 3 months later. :) The "business license" is totally meaningless and is primarily just for sales tax purposes and for a way for the state to find you. And NO, there was no requirement for any type of insurance for my "business" so my "license" didn't mean I was also insured.

Edit: Interesting. I just looked myself up in FL and my "business" from Jan 2017 still shows as active on a 3rd party site.

Business insurance isn't required by Florida state law except for workers' compensation. Employers must carry this coverage to protect their employees should they become injured or ill while at work
