Driving North - Where to stop?
Hello, we usually stop at Lumberton or Fayettville when we drive back to NY. However, it takes 7 hrs to Lumberton and 10 hours after that to NY. I was wondering whether there are better place to stop 1 -2 hours north of Fayetteville or Lumberton.
Cheers! |

Going north or south we shot for the Virginia/North Carolina boarder to stop coming from or to Mass.

We lived in Northwest NJ, so roughly 2.5 hours once you cross the Delaware Memorial bridge. Similar to people traveling to NY.
Going north, we've stayed as far south as Rocky Mount and as far north as just past Richmond. The hotels north of Richmond start going downhill quickly so you have to choose wisely. If we don't have a dog, we stay in the Holiday Inn express in Petersburg. If we do have a dog, we stay in the Quality Inn in Ashland. |
You need to drive a little further north. Fayetteville and Lumberton have very high violent crime rates. Per capita they are usually #1 & 2 in the state of NC.

Rocky Mount NC or Fredericksburg VA if you can make it that far

Selma, NC is another place to try... Exit #95 0n I-95...

When I used to drive home to Boston it was always on weekends, left around 6 am drove to Rocky Mt , arrived Sunday afternoon in Boston.,I’ve gotten smarter the last 10 years , I hardly used the car when home , so now I just fly and walk everywhere, if a car is really needed I can Uber or borrow one

We got here last night after our two day 1,360 mile drive from western MA. We take the NY through way to 84 to 81 to 77 to 26 to 95. Our pet friendly half way stop is in Christiansburg, VA. FYI, it was the easiest ride ever, traffic was unusually light, perhaps due to high gas prices?

If you will sleep in Lumberton you will sleep anywhere. Why ask?

For Northern NY - consider going North to Charlotte and then up thru Harrisburg PA and avoiding much of I-95

Emporia, VA

I like VA, but more important is last potty stop right before DC. DC at around 7 or 8 pm and NYC about 10 or 11 pm. No rush hour, no stops. Or the last leg on a Sunday.

I tried twice to buy a Class C or a small Class A mainly for the trip to Jersy and another trip we take to N.C. but can't or should I say won't pay what they are asking for the rigs now. I have no interest in a used unit. I'm going to try the Airstream dealer in Tampa and see if that will work. That way we can mosey around instead of rushing. I want to be finished with the rat race. I don't know how many more years I can do the 500 to 600 miles a day safely. Glad you made it safely. Welcome home. :mademyday: :clap2: |
A different approach would be to make trip part of enjoyment. Most of us are retired and really do not need to get there in exactly two days. We often incorporate a two-night visit in a place like Charleston. For the balance of the trip, we try to limit our travel such that we are able to be off the road NLT 5PM, and can then enjoy a nice dinner.
I do all I can to avoid the I-95 experience between Richmond and into Connecticut and since my destination is MA' the I-81/I-84 option works well for us. |
I hear u!!!

1. There were no "reply" boxes because the thread was closed by the moderators. This typically happens when the replies have become too political. Closing the thread means the moderators do not want to see more discussion on the topic, it doesn't mean they want you to comment on the topic on another thread. 2. Fair and Balanced used to be the tag line for a particular news network. Viewers realized they were neither fair nor balanced. I believe that tag line is no longer used. That phrase was never used by, or promised by, ToTV. 3. It is fairly easy to start your own thread rather than polluting non-related threads. |

And you're incorrect. They still use that phrase... |
