Cinco de Mayo 'party'?!!!

I just came back from the SS Cinco de Mayo 'party'. What the hell?!! Dead silence for 15 minutes, then they finally get the first bunch of dancers on. Another 20 minutes of dead silence and then they bail on the next 'belly dancers' act. Hard to understand what possible "technical difficulties" went on for that to happen. If you were there with friends I guess you may not have noticed, but as a single person looking for entertainment, it was BAD!!! Sorry for the rant and hope most of you enjoyed it more than I did.

Oh my, did you ask for a refund?

Keefelane66 05-05-2022 06:37 PM

You confirmed my thoughts too. We left after about 30 minutes and wound up in Wildwood Mexican Restaurant

EdFNJ 05-05-2022 06:39 PM

Maybe they were getting too old? After being here about 5 1/2 years I can't take the Belly Dancers or Twirlers or Stilt Walkers anymore. It was "cute" the first few times but after ...... meh. :duck::duck::duck::duck: :D :D

The statue never talked to you?

Garywt 05-05-2022 08:42 PM

That is too bad, usually they put on a good show. Who was the band down there. The last time I saw the belly dancers they were down to 3 dancers and I am not sure they could all walk. Anyway, what else did they have going on, we’re the food trucks there, anything else. Sorry I was not enjoyable.

They were giving a tour to prospective apartment dwellers so the noise had to be kept down to not scare them away.

If they collect their hearing aids before the music they would not know the difference

I had already eaten so I didn't look to see if there was food, but I saw booths with stuff to buy and VERY LONG lines at the alcohol huts. Don't know the band name, but pretty sure they were playing mexican music. Only heard one song before the crazy situation waiting for dancers, than I left.

Thankfully this will only happen once a year.

My cousin’s friend’s sister told me there is a song shortage caused by the pandemic. :bigbow:

Was it free entertainment? That's a serious question. Unfortunately maybe they were trying out a new producer and everyone needs to get their " act " together.

brines 05-06-2022 05:20 AM

sounds like your renaming it stinkco de mayo

LynetteV 05-06-2022 05:24 AM

Do not know how you missed all the fun. But we all had a wonderful time.

That’s awful! What a bummer!

mamamia54 05-06-2022 06:37 AM

We were also there. I understand exactly what you are talking about. The belly dancers came out and they couldn’t get their music to work. I would think that would be checked before they are in the square waiting to perform. I guess not. Wasted a lot of time. I think it’s wonderful how these ladies perform and join these groups. However, they should allow more time for them and not cut into the performing bands time. Perhaps start earlier and let all the performers do their thing. By the way, the band was Stella Beat which is a Latin band. I happen to like Latin music so I really enjoyed them. They also play other music, not exclusive to Latin. I do agree, a lot of wasted time with nothing going on. Still was an nice night out for us.

Freeda 05-06-2022 06:55 AM

We went to Lazymacs. Great party. Scooter the DJ played a mix of his line dance songs plus regular dance music; mariachi band also played; and Scooter did fun Cinco-themed audience participation games. We'll definitely go back any time they do repeats of this type of event.

Bikehike 05-06-2022 07:01 AM

It's cinco mayo not professional ballet

Wish I was still there. We could have enjoyed people watching together until the music started.

mike519 05-06-2022 07:15 AM

A different view.

There must have been two different events last night! The Cinco de Mayo Festival at Spanish Springs I went to was quite enjoyable. Everybody I met seemed to enjoy the dance groups and the music in general. The roaming clown and stilt performers added to the fun.

Chi-Town 05-06-2022 07:18 AM

It was a festive evening. When the first act had sound problems they moved up El Grupo Folklorico with their colorful dresses and Spanish dancing. Stella Beat kept everyone toe tapping with their high energy. Everyone was there to have fun and you could see that well into the night.

EJones368 05-06-2022 07:22 AM

Not the greatest Cinco-de-Mayo at SS

We thought the 'Mexican' band was pretty bad. Ended up in Sumter Landing listening to truly good musicians: Steve Hogie Band!

Bogie Shooter 05-06-2022 07:33 AM

As usual in The Villages events……….some liked it some didn’t.
So what?

I hear from the sanitation workers who heard it on the grapevine that the new Costco was having a party at the same time to celebrate the new location in the Publix parking lot. 🤣😊😂

Joe C. 05-06-2022 07:58 AM

Cinco de Mayo .... most people incorrectly think that it is Mexican independence day. And they're wrong. It's just an excuse to party and drink and listen to music and singing in a language that so many of us don't understand. I sat at SS with friends last night and the ongoings were just pure torture.

On the bright side ..... it was good to people watch. Better than Wal - Mart.

Cinco = 5
Seis = 6
So it will not be, Seis da mayo ever.
Cinco de Mayo 2023. Cinco de Mayo for the year 2023 is celebrated/ observed on Friday, May 5th. Cinco de Mayo is observed on May 5. Cinco de May is May 5th in the Spanish language. Mexican Americans celebrate this day to honor their ethnicity and remember the defeat of the French army by the Mexican army during the Battle of Puebla in Mexico

as the crystal ball is being revealed as not so crystal clear.....

The experience that I've had is the "entertainment" is like ocean waves - some good some just ...well... get a DJ, nope even that isn't any good. So don't expect a lot they don't get A or B level around here. the old saying was "if the band sounds bad just crank up the volume and they'll sound better" and that goes with everything.

The other interesting part we learned after a few trips to Mexico is - they aren't holding parties on Cinco !! it's a solemn day there, no parties just as it was described mourning. Probably why they don't drink Corona in Mexico and send it here LOL.

May your journey be less disappointing, but if you ever want to vent please feel free and PM me

rustyp 05-06-2022 08:20 AM

Last year was the first Cinco de Mayo ...
When Americans tried to avoid getting a case of Corona

costco is going in the old Katie belles on the second floor.

kathy1516 05-06-2022 09:12 AM

What I have a real issue with is the fact that parking is a nightmare at these squares. There is no consideration for residents that are handicapped. It’s first come, first served mentality. There are many times I’d like to visit the square and listen to music, but I cannot because I am unable to walk from the parking areas. No services provided for handicapped people to get from the parking lot to the square. The availability to visit the squares is limited to able bodied people only. Now with the influx of new residents, besides the seasonal snowbirds, it’s nearly impossible to park. Three squares does not accommodate all that live here.

manaboutown 05-06-2022 09:17 AM

"In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has been relegated to the status of a minor holiday, far less important than the national celebration of Independence on September 16."

"One of the leading promoters -- and beneficiaries -- of Cinco de Mayo has been Grupo Modelo, makers of Corona Beer."

From: Cinco de Mayo, from the Battlefield to the Beer Bottle | History News

The Mexicans (born and raised in Mexico, not the USA) I know do not celebrate it as it means nothing to them.

mikeritz53 05-06-2022 09:21 AM

REALLY, you cannot understand Technical Difficulties, like when the Whole of The Villages recently were without Internet for almost a Full Day???? You get almost a Full Evening of FREE Entertainment and you Whine about 15 minutes of Dead Air, no wonder we Villagers get a BAD reputation and are called Entitled.
