Golf Cart Etiquette

I’m currently enjoying my second lifestyle visit here in TV this week. I have a golf cart that is fixed not to exceed 15 MPH. I have noticed while driving the golf cart paths that a golf cart will come up behind me and begin to tailgate me. I have been signaling and pulling to the side of the path when there is space to do this. Is this the correct thing to do?

kaydee 08-26-2022 10:32 PM

I’d say that is very thoughtful. Enjoy your visit

Since the speed is 20 MPH, yes that is the correct thing to do. I had a rental once that didn’t go 20 and I was pulling over quite often to let people pass.

frose 08-27-2022 05:30 AM

The speed limit is 20. Good luck with that. They pass doing near 30. I do clock them just to satisfy my curiosity.

asianthree 08-27-2022 05:35 AM

Our first lifestyle in 07 the cart barely do 12 miles an hour. If you went up hill you could’ve walked faster.

Have no idea what speed owned carts were set at, but everyone passed us. Bonus, everyone that passed us knew were were in a lifestyle cart, no one seemed upset at the slow rate of speed, they just waved or smiled.

Toymeister 08-27-2022 06:27 AM

There is no speed limit on the multimodal paths. There is a federal requirement that golf carts not exceed 19.9 mph. If it exceeds 19.9 it is a low speed vehicle which must be licensed and insured per Florida statute in addition to additional Federal safety requirements.

As the OP certainly can testify there are thousands of law breakers here in Florida's friendliest home town.

Interesting. I could not find anything in federal statutes or the Federal Register that reference golf carts. There are some safety regulations regarding LSVs, but nothing about speed other than the definition that they go 20+ mph. All golf cart regulations appear to be state and local. IF there is any federal regulation of golf carts, it would only go to prove we have way, way too much government.

Papa_lecki 08-27-2022 07:10 AM

Oh Good, another thread on golf cart speeds.

Bay Kid 08-27-2022 07:42 AM

Wave them on by or pull to the side. ENJOY!

What it really proves, is what everyone on this site should know. Villagers/Posters fancy themselves experts on every subject under the sun and opinions are offered as if Moses chiseled them on stone tablets.

You calling Moses a chiseler? 😒

How so? It was stated there is a Federal regulation on golf cart speed. I stated I couldn't find it. It doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I also stated the opinion, that if such a federal regulation exists, it is an overreach by big government. How that makes anyone an "expert" on federal law is beyond me. Besides, if you are a believer, either Christian or Jewish, it was God, not Moses that chiseled those tablets.

charmed59 08-27-2022 08:56 AM

Yes, I remember in our lifestyle visit the card went no where near 20mph, so those with personal carts could always pass us. It was okay, as we needed to pull over often anyway to check our directions.

Cupcake57 08-27-2022 12:51 PM

Welcome! I am a very defensive driver and hate tailgaters, so if there is no curb on the MMP, I pull off into the grass, smile sweetly, and say to myself "they must have to pee worse than I do!" HA! Enjoy your visit and come back for good soon.

So your cart goes 30?

Interesting...

Not to mention the thousands of law breakers in automobiles who exceed the 20 or 35 mph posted speed limits on the regular roads...

Ain’t THAT the truth?

Garywt 08-27-2022 06:26 PM

It is nice that you pull over but it is not necessary. Just drive and if someone is unhappy let them figure it out for themselves.

No I do 20. I have a radar gun to check the others out. 30 is about average. They should see what happens to the human body in a cart involved in a 30 mph wreck. Another house for sale.

You have got to be kidding. Why on earth would you clock other golf carts? Wanna be cop or something?

superzcomputerz 08-28-2022 04:46 AM

Yes…

Yes, please move aside if unable to maintain speed, thank you!

100% agree with this statement!!!

srswans 08-28-2022 05:46 AM

I haven’t been to an etiquette class but I wouldn’t pull off the path to let someone else by. Stay right of course but let the faster driver deal with passing.

It’s left over from my old job. I have many electronic tools left over. It’s nice to have the stuff laying around you never know when you can use them.

Berwin 08-28-2022 05:53 AM

Federal regulation?

Perhaps this is the federal regulation being referenced? This sticker is in my Club Car.

OK, at least you didn't go out and buy one.
So now, what would possess you to use it here????? Curiosity????
Also, the number of carts that go 30+ are extremely limited. Is your radar gun properly calibrated?

ANSI standards are not law…just a standard. Consider it a suggestion, like the yellow/black speed limit sign, not enforceable.

banjobob 08-28-2022 06:34 AM

Those lifestyle arts are really a nuisance at that speed , yes the prudent thing is to pull over and be safe as most carts are in the 20 to 25 mph range, it will save you a lot of grief by just getting out of the way.

Golf cart speed cannot be set to go over 20 mph per The Florida Law enforcement handbook.

Which of the previous 22 posts? Is this a guessing contest?

GizmoWhiskers 08-28-2022 06:45 AM

Be predictable. Hold your line. If you want to pull over and safely can then fine, however not required. They can pass when safe to do so. People upping their speed regulators does not equal pushing slower carts off the trail. Just wave them on. I watched a new driver of one be bullied at the enterance of a tunnel with sharp turn on it. She was more scared by the idiot passenger in the passenger seat than she was the tunnel. He told his female driver to pass her at the tunnel enterance sight unseen and she did! It was disgusting to have observed that! You be safe, do you and ENJOY. Forget the bullies and village a-holes!

And you "clocked" them how?

richardc1947 08-28-2022 07:01 AM

Most golf carts that “Villages Ready” are designed to max out between 20 and 22 mph. They also have headlights, taillights, horn and turn signals. Some cart owners tweak the governors up to mid to uppers 20’s mph.
On the other hand golf carts that are primarily used on golf courses typically max out about 14 mph. You may be using one of these. But they still must have headlights, taillights, horn and turn signals to travel on the streets.

There's no etiquette. It's every man, and woman, for themselves.

Agree! So many speeding, tailgating, etc, and they pretend they are concerned with ETIQUETTE?
Just drive as safely, carefully as you can.

mikeycereal 08-28-2022 08:46 AM

My loaner tops out at 19, though I've passed others and have had others pass me. A couple of them waved me by, which was cool, but I don't do that. Anyone can wait for a safe straightaway to pass me. The ones that waved me by had 1 or 2 passengers in them slowing them down, and they got it when they saw me behind them (not tailgating). I plan to get mine to at least 23; 19 and flooring it feels like a slug. I may not go 23 everywhere but it'll be avail when I want it. Just be aware of unsafe drivers, espec the ones going over the solid lines.
