My dog has a bullet in him

Brought Sam to the vet today because I thought he was having some arthritis problem (although he's a little too young for that yet) so we took a full body xray and lo and behold, Dr. Valdez found a pellet bullet in his upper torso. I know it didn't happen in LA because the way the house was situated, we had 7' walls all around the house.

My dogs, both in LA and here in TV, do not go out of the house or my backyard. Here in TV they only go on my lanai and they are very happy to live like this. This could only have happened here in TV. They also do not go to the Doggie Runs as they aren't very socialized and I also hate fleas and they get them there.

So this post is just to caution any of you with dogs, there is a hater here in TV and we must watch out for him/her. It could have been a contractor so I'm not saying its a neighbor, God forbid, but I feel totally violated right now and very very angry this this had to happen to my little pooch. Tomorrow I will report it to the police to see if they have any interest in this.

Careful out there, you never know!!!!
BTW, Sam is good and the bullet doesn't need to come out..Thank God.....

HawkeyeBarb 12-09-2010 06:14 PM

KathieI...I am SO SO SORRY this has happened to you and Sam!! VERY SHOCKING indeed and I can imagine how awful you must be feeling. Know that I am thinking of you all and I certainly hope this is resolved!
Fondly....HawkeyeB.

bkcunningham1 12-09-2010 06:15 PM

Oh no Kathie. I really hate that. I can't imagine shooting at a poor dog for no reason. I wish I could say something to make you feel better. I am just thankful it didn't do any major damage to your poor doggie.
Happy thoughts!

pooh 12-09-2010 06:27 PM

Kathie, have you checked the screening on your lanai? Did you find a hole?

I'm so sorry your pooch has been injured. Did the vet give any indication how long the pellet might have been in your dog?

(When we lived in So CA, a 6 foot fence didn't deter any who wanted to hurt pets. Cats and dogs were injured or worse.)

Hope puppy has a speedy recovery. Again, I'm so sorry this has happened.

RichieLion 12-09-2010 06:57 PM

Could it have been in the dog even before you got him? This is a little mysterious. I hope Sam's recovering well and I also hope it didn't, in fact happen, in The Villages. That would just be too weird.

Yes, there is a hole in the screen. I saw it about 2 months ago and couldn't imagine where a round hole about 1/2" in diam came from. Now I think I know..

I'm so sorry your pooch has been injured. Did the vet give any indication how long the pellet might have been in your dog?
No, the vet can't tell me how long its been there, but given the hole in the screen, I'd think about 2 months. Also I thought I would have seen blood, but apparently not depending on where it entered and its right below the skin.....

(When we lived in So CA, a 6 foot fence didn't deter any who wanted to hurt pets. Cats and dogs were injured or worse.)

Very true, but the way the property was situated, I would have seen anyone targeting the dogs, plus it was a small piece of property and all the neighbors had lots of dogs. So I doubt it.

Hope puppy has a speedy recovery. Again, I'm so sorry this has happened.

Thank you all, he is feeling okay, I think its more my mental state than anything. Just so upsetting to think this piece of LEAD is inside my dog!!!

islandgal 12-09-2010 07:31 PM

Oh, Kathie, I am so upset for you. Very upsetting and scary.
Have you reported it to the Sheriff?

mgm4444 12-09-2010 07:37 PM

What an absolute tragedy. I am so very sorry for you Kathi. An awful thing to have to go thru. I'm glad you still have your dog. My prayers are with you.

TednRobin 12-09-2010 07:46 PM

I am so sorry to hear this. Keep us updated on any new news or if the sheriff comes up w any leads.

graciegirl 12-09-2010 08:42 PM

Kathie. I am so sorry. I know you must be so upset.

You are on a water something....How far do pellet guns shoot?

I can't imagine who did this or how it happened.

duffysmom 12-09-2010 08:44 PM

Outrageous

It's frightening to think that there is someone lurking around our homes who is willing to shoot a defenseless animal. I'm outraged!!! If your dogs bark perhaps a disgruntled neighbor is to blame. Whoever did such a thing is sick. I'm sorry that your peace of mind has been violated.

another Linda 12-09-2010 08:46 PM

So upsetting, Kathie. I'm glad your Sam is okay. But what about you? I'd be totally freaked and I'm sure you are too!

K9-Lovers 12-09-2010 08:55 PM

It is just mind boggling that someone would shoot your dog while it is INSIDE your lanai! Poor little sweetheart. Very scary. Please keep us updated if you learn who dunnit.

Boomer 12-09-2010 09:45 PM

Kathie,

I am so sorry. How awful.

I am thankful that your dog is doing fine.

Many years ago, we found that our dog had a bullet in her. Her name was Mandy. She managed to sneak out of our yard once and was gone on an adventure for several hours. She returned to us, safe and sound, but a couple of years later when she was being checked for something else, the vet saw the bullet. We did not really know when it had happened, but we wondered about the time she was gone for a while. It was a real bullet, but she had a nice little layer of fat that had trapped it and there it stayed for the rest of her long life and through many more adventures.

I am so glad Sam is OK. But I know the thought of this happening is a terrible feeling for you.

Boomer

mac9 12-09-2010 09:45 PM

:cus:Kathie, I am so sorry and upset that this happened to you and Sam. I know that we think of TV as some sort of Utopia, but it is filled with people from all walks of life and they bring whatever hates and prejudices they have always had. I think that the hole in your screen adds credence to my thoughts.

redwitch 12-09-2010 09:51 PM

Oh, Kathie, I'm so very, very sorry. I can only imagine your pain and anger that this happened to Sam. To have a beloved pet get hurt is bad enough but to have it happen in your own home makes it so frightening. Let's hope that it was an errant act by a stranger or, better yet, an accidental shooting so that you can one day again feel safe letting your babies out on the lanai. Many HUGS.

Taltarzac 12-09-2010 10:32 PM

Sorry that happened KathieI. Please keep us informed about your report to the police and your dog's health.

There do seem to be some dog haters here in the Villages as some of the posts here on TOTV seem to show.

What kind of pellet was this? BB?

Any neighbors take trips to the air gun shooting range at Rio Grande Recreational Center?

tudacee 12-10-2010 12:39 AM

Hearing this just makes me sick. Years ago, a neighbor shot our dog and he was arrested by the police. He was doing it for "target practice"..this was in
CT

I hope somehow the sob gets his due...and I'm happy to hear the wee doggie is doing good.

:doggie:
Donna (and my dog,
Romeo sends his good wishes too)

kandj 12-10-2010 01:10 AM

OMG, I would be so upset if this had happened to my dog(s)! I do not have any living with us presently. We had an Akita that we adored. He scared "the dickens" out of anyone that trespassed and I was more than OK with that. We had to put him down when he could no longer recognize family members.

If I had to live alone, an Akita would be my first prefernce of a dog.

2newyorkers 12-10-2010 05:47 AM

Kathie, I am so sorry.

ladylake1 12-10-2010 07:31 AM

So sorry to hear about Sam. Thankfully he is OK but it is still traumatic.

ajbrown 12-10-2010 08:08 AM

 Sorry to hear a story like that and glad to hear all turned out well. My state of mind would definitely be affected if I learned a bullet was in our dog Caly. I would be constantly thinking who what when where why....

I cannot imagine it happening in TV...... actually I cannot imagine someone's pet being shot intentionally ANYWHERE, but awful people exist. Sounds like you may never know for sure the why, when or where, which IMO is even worse.

I have heard stories of pets being shot without the shooter knowing, but see no way that happens in TV without you living on a border where folks shoot on the farm, etc.

Hopefully your state of mind returns to calm, so you and Sam can try to get back to normal.....

dillywho 12-10-2010 08:21 AM

No Excuse

So sorry to hear about Sam, Kathie. There's no excuse for something like this or any type of animal cruelty. Let's just hope that it was an accident and that whoever did it had no idea that there was a stray shot. Hopefully, they will step forward and do the right thing if they realize there was a stray and it was theirs. If it was deliberate, _________ (you can fill in the blank)!!

That being said, there's no excuse for any kind of "sport shooting" here in TV except in a controlled environment such as the archery range. TV is a populated area, not remote countryside.

jebartle 12-10-2010 08:26 AM

So sorry to hear about Sam

Hard to believe that there are people that get a thrill in harming a helpless animal....I know that karma will be the answer..

Taltarzac 12-10-2010 08:35 AM

Some dog owners with their pets do go to the field just south of the Rio Grande Recreational Center. There is also a very small area the Villages Recreation use for an air gun range there.

The air gun range is not much bigger than a typical Villages garage. I suppose an accident could occur there at the Rio Grande Rec Center that would result in a pet having a pellet in him or her even though it looked like a lot of safety precauations were being taken at the air gun range.

The air guns I have used required the shooter to first pump it up. I am not sure if the air guns are still like this?

I agree - I am sorry - just wondering - is your dog (or dogs) barkers?

Unfortunately it happens in

a lot of places, in Montana, in Alaska and apparently in The Villages.

Taltarzac 12-10-2010 10:20 AM

Some of these pellet guns look like they would kill small game if fired close by?

http://www.airgundepot.com/popular-pellet-rifles.html

I have not shot a pellet gun since I was around 13 years old, but looking at some of the products on the above linked site; it seems that a pellet fired from some of these guns would travel quite far and would probably kill a pet outright if hit from 10 yards or less.

This could have been an accident depending on KathieI's home layout.

I still have a scar on my pinky finger from where a fellow 13 year old shot me with his BB gun. That was from about three feet and the gun had not been pumped up that much. That was not an accident though just a punk with a gun.

Yoda 12-10-2010 10:55 AM

My dog had a foot up his butt once. He's fine now. A much more polite pooch.

Yoda

P.S. We wouldn't have all these problems if we just banned all pets from TV.

MSNPA 12-10-2010 01:34 PM

Kathie, I'm so very sorry this happened to your dog. Nothing upsets me more than when something bad happens to animals especially when a human hurts an animal on purpose. Hope all goes well in keeping your little guy well.

Boudicca 12-10-2010 02:28 PM

Poor pooch

SO sorry to read that someone here in TVs could be so mean spirited as to harm a defenceless animal. Thank you for the "heads up" because our little dog spends a lot of time in the lanai.... :(

2BNTV 12-10-2010 02:36 PM

I am so sorry that you are upset. I hope Sam is doing well.

Hopefully, you can get some information as to how something like this could have happened to Sam and ease your mind.

Real nice, dude. :loco:

Kathy, sorry for the violation you and your dog experienced.

Kathie,
So sorry to hear about Sam being shot but very happy to hear he is doing well. :doggie:

Thanks Halle and Scrapple, I don't think Yoda's comment was very nice either... not funny and dumb on top of that.

I doubt that permission was granted from Lucas Licensing Ltd. for use of the Yoda avatar.

nONIE 12-10-2010 07:20 PM

Kathie,

I am appalled at the cruel and disgusting behavior o f some people toward animals. Poor Sammy, Im sure nothing he could have done deserved that.

It reminds me of the primitive cruelty of some of our neighbors when I was a kid. They used to poison our cats and they would suffer horribly before they died.

I sure would like to put a pellet in the butt of whoever did that to Sam! :swear:

sandybill2 12-10-2010 08:42 PM

I am so sorry this happened to your dog. We have lots of dogs in our neighborhood---and love them all-- Can't imagine that you have someone in your neighborhood that would do such a terrible thing.

I feel sorry for the dog. I bet it hurt. As soon as it happened, he probably forgot about it. Dogs are after all smarter that people.

Accidents happen. I would hope that nobody would shoot a pet on purpose. That said, I am sorry if I offended anyone but four pages?

The dog forgot it. He moved on. Why can't people. Again, sorry if I offend.
