Watch your watch!

Especially if it is a Rolex or other luxury brand.

Well, that's one thing I don't need to worry about.

manaboutown 08-24-2023 01:01 PM

I keep mine in a safe as I rarely wear it anymore. I take it out every so often and wear it a week or so, let it self wind, keep the moving parts lubed. Kind of a pain.

Stu from NYC 08-24-2023 01:47 PM

Well I was thinking of buying one now guess will not

So do you own the watch...or does it own you?

I own it but as with any property it owns me. The same goes for vehicles, homes, commercial real estate, pets, horses, farms, ranches, securities and other forms of property. They all need to be maintained.

I bought a beautiful one many years ago for husband. He smiled, admired it, praised it. It is still sitting on the same shelf he put it on years ago. He wears a Swiss watch.

I never felt the need to have things that I was going to need to worry about or lock away in a safe. It just seemed pointless to me.

Why would a thief bother to steal a Rolex?
Nothing special. We bought one at Marion Market for $10.
Keeps good time mind you.

No watch will be stolen on my watch as long as I am watching that watch. But watch out, as soon you stop watching that watch, which is not a stopwatch, that watch may be stolen from someone that was watching that watch.

manaboutown 08-24-2023 02:38 PM

I have owned it for over 30 years. It has sentimental value so I keep it and wear it occasionally. I customarily wore a watch until cellphones became ubiquitous and I starting keeping one at hand at all times.

Velvet 08-24-2023 02:41 PM

My girlfriend’s husband passed. She had his Rolex refitted and she wears it all the time. On her other wrist she wears her Apple Watch, “to tell the time”.

When I visited China in 2007 a few of us were buying them from street venders for $1.50 to $3.00. At the last hotel I left all of mine in the desk drawer in my room as I was in no way going to try to enter the US with counterfeit merchandise. When I was turning in my key at the front desk the clerk told me I had left them in the drawer. Very spooky! I told him they were a tip for the maid.

The $3.00 one was a see-through movement beauty, tough to leave behind. Apparently as part of the deal to get the 2008 Olympics the CCP had agreed to stop the manufacturing of many high end knock-offs but the el cheapo stuff was all over the place. I saw some very high quality Tommy Bahama clothing in a department store. It was very pricey though. Might have been the real thing but I doubt it.

Years ago I had the Rolex discussion with our CFO and Corporate Attorney. They both made it very clear that you don't wear a Rolex to tell time, you wear it as a piece of jewelry, same as your wife wears diamonds or other high end jewelry . It was all about status and power, so after that I started to observe who wore them and yep, seems they were right. I never could bring myself to get one, after paying for my wife's jewelry there wasn't enough left over lol.

When I bought my current Rolex (it was not my first) I had just become single again and had started to date. It went along with the Ferragamo shoes, Armani suits, Hermes ties and custom made shirts. I was dressing to impress. Yes, it paid off!

When my Dad met my Mom, back in 30's she had her own car and a fur coat.....after they married he ended up paying for the car and the coat. She dressed for success and yes, it paid off for her :)

Velvet 08-24-2023 03:22 PM

I just looked at the price of the watch in your link. My girlfriend bought her husband’s watch decades ago for $35,000.00. It has diamonds on the bottom I think. I guess she wanted to impress him but they were married by then already. Now, if she was pressed, she could use it as down payment for a house. I asked her, are you not afraid to wear it? She said, no, it’s insured.

Although I have owned two authentic Rolex watches, I also owned a fake one. I remember flying on a plane. About half way up to 30,000 feet the “sapphire crystal” popped off and landed in my lap. I superglued it back on. Still makes me laugh.

Just back from a cruise and one of the acts was a comedy magician. He had passengers go on the stage for a series of tricks and while up there, somehow their watch would wind up in his pocket. Their reactions were priceless

A man a few years older than myself whom I met about ten years ago told me flew jet fighters in the Korean conflict during the early 1950s. He still had on the Rolex he wore when he flew over there. He told me that during that time it was very accurate which it needed to be.

I have seen a lot of gold women's Rolex watches with diamonds on them. I see diamonds on the men's President too but not for me.

No the more or less real ones. Besides the guy who we bought it from gave me his unconditional guarantee.

Come to think of it he looks a lot like you. hmmm.

Well, I understand. Personally, I like my Apple Watch. I can listen to my music with EarPods and change the songs on my wrist. To me that’s cooler than anything Rolex makes… but that’s just me. It also prods me to keep moving instead of just talking in the pool.
I think of the high end watches as more like pieces of art, not actually time pieces.

They are pieces of art and socially acceptable jewelry for men.

My father had a Timex back in 1970 or so. One day he lost it. A few days later I spotted it in melting snow on his driveway with iced up tire tracks from his heavy Cadillac running back and forth over it. The strap had broken. He bought a new strap and continued to wear the still functioning Timex for years.

My wife bought a $75 excellent copy of a Louis Vuitton bag while were vacationing in Miami. One night in Lake Sumter Landing, two young punks cornered her and tried to rip it off her shoulder. Luckily, several men saw what was happening and came to her rescue. The punks ran away. Flaunt nothing! Trust no one!

Had a similar situation happen to me in Lake Sumter. A young man saw me get out of my vehicle then proceeded to follow me wherever I went. This went on for approx 30 minutes. Finally, I got the nerve to quickly turn and face him. Surprised, he ran as fast as he could in the other direction. Still not certain what his motives were but very scary. I am now on tight guard every time I go to any of the squares.

I've always been fascinated by mechanical things. I love the craftsmanship of them...

Probably why I love (mechanical) watches, guitars, and firearms. While I've never built a watch (yes, you can buy the cases, movements, etc and customize one for yourself), I have built a few guitars and rifles. It's fun and you learn how to troubleshoot problems that may pop up.

I bought my first Rolex some 35 years ago. It wasn't very expensive back then. It was a present to myself after I reached a profession milestone I had set. Later I bought a Breitling Chronograph that became my daily wearer for years.

After my Father in Law passed, my Mother in Law gave me a Breitling Chronograph with a slide rule in the bezel he had which was made in 1963. I don't know if he bought it used or if he was the original owner. But it didn't work. It was beyond my ability to fix, so I sent it to an Horologist outside of Philly, who serviced it and it's run like a top ever since...

I got my 2nd Rolex from a friend who owns a pawn shop. Killer deal on a stainless Daytona!

I still wear a watch daily, and I rotate between most of the watches (except the vintage Breitling, which I only wear for special occasions. I wore it to my middle daughters wedding last year and when she saw it on my wrist, she teared up because "Poppy Jack" was there...).

Currently, I'm wearing a Seiko Diver Automatic...

Currently, I'm on the hunt for a good deal on an Automatic Omega to go with the wind up one my wife gave me on our wedding day. It's a gold, wafer thin dress watch with a leather band.

Did I mention I love watches?

patfla06 08-24-2023 11:27 PM

Very happy with my Apple watch.

retiredguy123 08-25-2023 04:00 AM

Slightly off topic, but did you know that an electric plug in clock is not actually a clock? It measures the 60 cycles per second of the incoming electricity, which is a very imprecise time keeping method. But over time, the clocks are extremely accurate because the power plant either speeds up or slows down their generators to reset the time once every day.

I do the same. Occasionally use it to tell me the time.
