We need a new roof for our home. Can someone suggest a good and reliable contractor?

Unfortunately, IMHO, you may not know if the roofer was good for a few years after the roof was installed, some mistakes take that long to show up. When I get ready to do the roof replacement, I will be researching the BBB as well as Seniors Against Crime, and any other suitable resources that show long term suitability of the roofer. I will then confirm the quality of the materials used, and mention that I will be taking HIGH resolution pictures of the work in progress, this is to insure the correct number of nails per shingle and the correct location of the nails. I may even go so far as to ask a home inspector to stop by and take a look. I will also be carefully reviewing any warranty offered and the terms of the warranty.
As you can tell I am not looking forward to this task.

We were pleased with Eustis. They left the garden free of debris and came back quickly to fix a small leak around the Solar Tube.

McHale .. they didn't send a salesman, they sent a supervisor. I had 2 1/2 pages of ques, that he answered.

Raywatkins 01-26-2024 05:07 AM

We used Batterbee. We were pleased with the work and price. But as has been stated performance of the roof takes time to determine. Ours has been on for 4 years and no problems so far.

karenzeee 01-26-2024 05:20 AM

We used S&W Roofing. Will, the owner and his team are professional, honest, prompt, and tidy! Prices were very reasonable.
No sales pressure and no 2 hours sales pitch!

It has been 5 years and roof is in great shape.

I have rereferred them to many friends, all who have been happy with their work and prices.

Another vote for McHale. They are outstanding. Not to mention they are one odd the few roofing companies here that will do small repair jobs. Have referred them many times to customers.

Not Batterbee

I can only warn you away from Batterbee. Apparently they used to be a good company, but no more. In 2020, they put a new roof on our home. Despite my asking, they did not replace old vents, etc., but just reinstalled them around the new roof. Now we have an issue with leaks, because the old hardware is rusting, cracking, and so on. When I tried to have them honor the warranty, the workman who came out said the leaks had nothing to do with the roof. After having a costly home inspection, it's clear the problem is absolutely with the roof. Wishing you the best of luck.

Honestly The Best Advice in 2024: Listen to Your Neighbors Experiences

Skylight Roofing Villages - Voted Top 2023 Roofer Sumter, Marion, & Lake County on NextDoor, TOTV, Trust Pilot, and Google 💚

Inspections and estimates are always HASSLE FREE without any pressure from Skylight Roofing Villages. We live by this motto.

352-552-4766 or 888-520-0363

Note: Working and living in The Villages for over two decades - We know more than ever that it can be daunting trying to listen to all the opinions, minutia, rhetoric, etc all over social platforms.

Who do you trust? Right?

When trying to choose the right roofing contractor (Or any service company for that matter!) for your personal home, just take a little time to ensure that they are licensed, insured, have a decent reputation on neighborhood platforms, prices that are honest, and that they treat your property as if it was their own. This is what Skylight Roofing Villages inspires every day, every week, every year. We sincerely care and we hope it shows.

Remain positive! (Even though you might not feel the enthusiasm at the moment).

It’s difficult to know who to trust anymore, but Skylight Roofing Villages “does go out of their way” to make it seamless and offer up an honest quote - They may even tell you to wait until next year or the year after - Happens every day.

FL law makes Skylight Roofing accountable to implement a proper FL inspection (Again, FREE), not to manipulate or mechanically touch a roof; We will even take a video and the moment we step off the ladder you can see for yourself what condition roof is in personally. We just listen and provide the latest information to you with respect.

We also had a new roof installed by Eustis. Family owned, very reliability, beautiful job, with new roof vents installed where old ones were. All the other roof fixtures were replaced with new ones. Pictures were taken at every phase of the installation. Price was less than I thought. The cleanup after the job was completed was terrific. They did not try to sell me any extra features.
They removed my solar pool heating unit from the roof at no extra change. I chose not to replace it on the new roof. Good luck!

McGinnis was the most reasonable of the 3 quotes we got, and they did a great job. Done in a less than a day.

Another recommendation for McGinnis at 352-266-9403; insurance company required us to replace the roof when we bought and they were great. Quick, very good job, cleaned up after themselves, good price - and since we were paying, it did matter!

I used Batterbee Roofing also. After they were finished, my roof leaked worse than before they arrived, damaging the ceiling and drywall in my bathroom. To their credit, they did come back and fix the roof (by way of explanation they said something I did not quite understand about materials not being installed correctly around a boot by their workers). And they also sent someone to repair my drywall. I did have to fight with them to get the wet insulation taken out of my attic. They also installed a solar tube for me and I had problems with that too. Cannot recommend.

We ended up using McGinnis after getting 3 other quotes. We were impressed with the shingles they used (Certainteed Landmark), the underlay, valley membrane and roof ridge vents that were used. They added a new section of ridge vent and extended another one. And, the price was the most competitive! They removed an old electric attic fan and replaced it with a solar one. They were there at 6:30 a.m. with a large crew, shingles were delivered that morning, unlike other contractors who deliver shingles weeks before the job, with shingles sitting on top of the home, causing added weight to an old roof. They finished by 3:30 after a thorough cleanup. I told the supervisor that other neighbors were interested in getting a new roof and he said they were unable to approach a homeowner unless they called McGinnis first, unlike some other roofing contractors who go door to door trying to sell a new roof. We are very pleased with their work and the result!

Another vote for McGinnis, they are doing a friends roof as I type this and are doing ours next month. I did much research before hiring them. When you call for a quote, the owner of the company, Tim McGinnis, will come to your home.

We had Sky Light Roofing put a new roof on our home 1/17/2024, it was a painless process they delivered on every promise without being reminded. They handled all county permitting and ARC approval. My son owns a large roofing distribution company up north so I had him review all of my quotes and he told me that Sky Light was a very fair quote and they do all the little things that define a Platinum installer. New drip caps on entire house, new stacks, vent covers, and new ridge vents. They installed on the schedule date and cleaned up as promised. Brent is a village resident and extremely easy to work with always returning calls and text. I don’t know about the other company’s in the area but I’m glad that I selected Sky Light.

We used Sky Light as did many of our neighbors. We got a darker color to hide the mold and mildew even though there is a warranty against mold and mildew. Had county inspection and ARC approval. Also installed new powder coated vent and exhaust pipe covers to match roof. Florida's code was changed in 2021 to include a sealed roof deck under the shingles.

Next Dimension Roofing in Summerfield. Best product, lowest price. Close second is Eustis Roofing in Lady Lake. Lower price but they use Certianteed products.

I heard that McHale's Roofing was sold -- someone on Next Door reported that the new owner did not provide a quality job. If you are going to use McHale's Roofing - investigate to see if the information is accurate.

Mc Hales. Like them since they did a small job 3 years ago and handed me the bill after work was done and I paid them 2-3 days later. Hard to find anyone who will do small jobs.

FIRST, get Scott Skipper of SPS Roofing (352/347-8530) to INSPECT your roof. IF you ACTUALLY NEED a new roof, he is honest enough to tell you that and will likely give you the lowest quote. (We had five estimates and he was the lowest-- AFTER telling us we probably could get by for another year or two. But we needed to replace all our solar panels, so we went ahead and he did a GREAT job). We have recommended him to all our friends/neighbors and many have used him and are satisfied. You won't be sorry!!

Roofers can do a roof in one day because the county does not require as many inspections as there are in other counties. In Palm Beach County inspector has to come out after base layer(tar paper) is installed in order to make sure it was installed per code. Good or bad, this does not appear to be done in Sumter County, unless the inspector can and does inspect it with minimal notice.

Be VERY careful first of all. Read what the village tinkerer wrote on this thread, and lastly, talk to a retired professional (old timer) roofer IF you don't know the lingo. Both our sons did roofing through college and grad school. If you find someone with a good reputation, they may very well have a completely different "crew" of roofers, many of whom may not even speak your language so communication during the job is impossible. There are MANY ways to cut corners, the number of nails per strip is important, many people don't even inquire about the nail strips a company uses. There are MANY ways to do the "peak and valley" work, the "cheap and fast", and the "tried and true", many short cuts YOU pay for down the line when you can't find the contractor or, your one year "warrentee" is expired. Again, find an "old timer", who did roofing for 30 years or more, and ask him EXACTLY what to ask about METHODS used... you knowing those methods, and the differences in them, should put the contractors (or the door to door sales people) on their toes, you might frighten them a bit, you are an old retired senior and should not KNOW much about how to roof ! LOL ! Have any the of the door to door "free" inspectors told you yet, with a VERY long and concerned face, that you have "creasing"... OMG. If they do, smile and let them know that is a perfectly normal condition as roofs age, not a tragedy.

You are correct, right on ! Both of our sons worked their way through college and grad school by roofing. They can NOT believe how they roof here, the materials they use, the methods, the nail strips with fewer nails to the strip, and that inspections are NOT done at each step. They watched a roof go on across the street two days before Christmas on a house that was probably 2300, 2400 Sq. ft. and could not believe the speed and no inspection had to be done after the underlay !

I had Roofing Pros USA do an inspection on my roof last week. They found many loose shingles and almost no grit was left on the existing shingles.

They use TAMKO Heritage shingles a name I am not familiar with. Corning has been my "go to" on my home in PA.

Roofing Pros indicated they will handle ALL correspondence with the insurance company and my only expense will be the deductable on my policy plus any sheeting or fascia wood that might need repaired.

I have a list of questions regarding their contract language and I'm waiting for a reply,

Anyone reading this who can shed some light on Roofing Pros will be appreciated.

Skylight Roofing Villages - Villages Trusted Roofer for over 18 years

It’s very difficult to trust service folks these days on follow-through (I speak to my Wife often about this). That’s where YOU come in …. neighbors will listen to your experiences, and we humbly hope it was or will be an outstanding one.

We understand that the most important question that stands between you and that decision:

“Who do I (we) trust, and will they give me (us) the best possible roofing quality installation to go along with the best price…with everything included?”..

For those of you who previously did their homework and decided to make a wise decision to RoofWithUs!®, we thank you for all your kind comments on Google, NextDoor, Talk of the Villages, BBB, and Trust Pilot!

For those of you currently pondering the inevitable, we look forward to providing a “Hassle-Free” roofing review - Always courteously treating you as a Villages Neighbor and Extended Family. Seriously, we really consider our neighbors family!

Once again, Thank you very much for the opportunity to provide you with best possible estimate - Leave a review or just FAVE us as one of your roofers of choice in The Villages please:
