Would like to see NYC again but how safe is it now a days?
I know many here in TV are originally from NY and eastcoast so I'm sure there will be some good input...
It's been a looooong time since I visited NYC and always wanted to go back. Is it true that NYC is getting very dangerous? Have you been there recently? How safe did you feel? Would be interesting to hear from those of you that grew up in NYC...and what your thoughts are on this subject. Also I've always been fascinated by the history of NYC so share stories of growing up there please if you would. :) TIA |
I would not go there unarmed...hope that answers your question.

Statistics show that NYC is safer than many of the big cities in Florida. Of course it is not safer than The Villages where most of the residents are too old to commit crime.

I went once, that's enough.

Going in May. Historically, always super vigilant in NYC, this trip will be no different. It’s never been Disney World nor Mayberry but it’s a great city to visit. I’m usually in Greenwich Village or Little Italy anyway so I would be disappointed if I didn’t see a little underbelly of society on my way there. Don’t be scared off....just be aware

But I was much younger then and had quicker reflexes if there was trouble. :duck: |

I went last year for a few days. It’s crazy crowded anyplace a tourist would go. It didn’t seem unsafe. At least not from a violence perspective. Watch out for scammers and pick pokets. Don’t go down any dark alleys.

You should be fine but dont wander away by yourself with nobody around

NYC crime rate statistics are available in an easy to read format HERE

There is an old saying, "you can't go home". Everything changes over time.

Had to go there frequently during my working days. Now retired, don’t have to go there anymore, and won’t ever return. Way too many people in too small of a place.

That said, crime statistics are based per capita.....so if little old Podunk KY (not sure if that’s a real one!) , has a double murder/suicide, effectively, for that day at least....is the most dangerous town in the country. You can correct me if that’s wrong but these types of statistics can be misleading and at the least ambiguous |

Take a look at St Louis, Kansas City (very dangerous) vs NYC. |

Of, late, The National Guard patrolling the subways (due to the increased crime/attacks on the train platforms and in the train cars) give me pause... The noticeable increase in random women getting punched in the face while walking down a busy street give me pause... The random attacks, stabbings, shootings, give me pause... That said, I don't see myself visiting any time soon... |
We do miss it
Miss the outstanding ethnic foods we used to have regularly. Miss Broadway shows and all the things NYC has to offer. Still would never move back at this stage of our life |

Do find Sakura a good Japanese restaurant in the Bubble. Also Kayame and Kung Fu are passable Thai. |

And yes, I agree with Tarpon Springs for Greek food... it's hard to find good Greek restaurants up here in the upper midwest. |

Lived there for a week, commuted from mid town to the USCG at the Battery to take pilot exams.
No trees, no grass, LOTS and LOTS of cement and steel. . Financial headquarters of my last company was in Brooklyn, took trains from long Island. People just hang out on the street when there is nothing else to do, and way too many hang out at the same time. Just a place where there are no redeeming qualities that I can't get better qualities elsewhere. Driving down in May and going to take i287 western NJ just to avoid getting anywhere near it. . eh, i rather go places I haven't been before. . Scandinavia is calling. . |

Think NYC is safer than Chicago |
Quote:
Chicago is a great comparison. When my husband and daughter were driving to Canada on a trip they stopped at a Holiday Inn as they usually do when they are traveling. There was blood on the walls of their room. Not a city they plan to visit too soon again. |
