Courtyard villas / no bathroom window?
What do people do in a courtyard villa without a window in bathroom? I'm from up north where we Always opened windows for fresh air?
|
Our veranda windows are not 'openable' . Code requires an openable window or an exhaust fan.
|
Use the fan...too hot to open windows!
|
Yup, I use both fans in the master bathroom, and I replaced all the original fans with more powerful versions.

That is why we have A/C

Seriously? There's a reason it's called a "fart fan"! It's been standard equipment in every bathroom in the country since sometime in the 70's -- even Alaska.
Personally. I think that window behind the toilet in my Designer home is one of the dumber features of this carbon-copy house on a postage stamp in Florida. Just what I want -- a window from my toilet to my neighbor's dining room window, 10' away. First thing I did was buy some window frosting at Lowe's. Meanwhile, there's no cabinet there for spare TP. Brilliant thinking by some New York architect, no doubt! |
The last thing your very close neighbor would appreciate is sniffing your bathroom use from an open window. That l’eau de outdoor toilet… We have exhaust fans that vent on the roof.
|
I would just point out that, for privacy and noise reduction, courtyard villas are designed where one side of the house has no windows. So, all the bathrooms would need to be on the other side of the house. Personally, I like it the way it is. I have no need for a window in the bathroom.

Its bad enough with kissing lanais don't need a bathroom with a window with homes being so close to each other on new builds it seems extremely close in southern area.

My new designer Dove home doesn't have any windows that open in the bathrooms either.
|
My condo had no window in the bathroom. Every other home I've lived in has though, including the one I live in now. The bathroom in the apartment I rented in my 3rd year of college was awesome; it opened wide, and I could climb out onto the roof of the overhang of the basement apartment's back door, and catch some much-needed sun in the spring.

I guess being from UP NORTH , I love fresh air. I wonder if u could put in skylights that OPEN like we had up north??
|
They move back north to get fresh air.

Leaving windows open here introduces a huge amount of heat and humidity most of the year. Then your AC has to get rid of both. The humidity can lead to all sorts of problems, like mildew on clothes and shoes in closets. The electricity used by the exhaust fan is much less than what is used by the AC. Amazon.com I’d sort of like to have the Solar Guys install Solar Tubes in my bathrooms (I had that done in my previous home in The Villages). But that’s expensive. My bathroom lights are on perhaps a half hour a day, and the cost is perhaps one or two cents a day, compared to maybe $800 for a Solar Tube installed. |
I had a house in northern Virginia that had 5 bathrooms. Only one had a window and it could not be opened. Also, there are millions of condos, apartments, townhouses, and single family houses up north that have bathrooms without windows. Bathrooms with windows is definitely not a standard "up north" design feature.

Agreed and almost impossible to add a window. While an exhaust fan works fresh air is nice
|
Some people have made the decision on their own - don’t know what it was but thanks for asking.
|
That’s why bathrooms have exhaust fans to remove the high humidity in the bathroom so mold doesn’t grow on your walls. You’re suppose to run the exhaust fan for 20 minutes after you take a shower. Opening a window here would do the opposite, allowing high humidity into the room since Florida always has high humidity outdoors.
|
My concern with my CYV master bath was more around getting some natural light in there, not venting. I installed a 14” solar tube near the shower and vanity. It’s fabulous - no need to turn lights on during the day.
|
I'm obviously not talking about opening up windows in high humidity season but when weather cools , I open all windows. Don't know why people hAve to be so nasty on this site. Alot of people love fresh air !! I'm wondering why we don't see skylights here that open like up north?? Solar tube's yes we see but I love skylights? Any not sarcastic comments please?
|
Just use a good plug in air freshener and turn on the exhaust fan if it get too bad.

Also, I don't know of any rule that says you cannot install a skylight that will open to allow outside air in. |

I hope you find a solution that works for you. |

I haven’t read the whole thread but I like a window in the bathroom. I read some posts that say that neighbors in kissing lanais or closely situated CYV can smell someone else’s ‘Baby Ruth’ movements from a fresh air opened window vs a strategically placed vent? The level of comfortability SOME people have with outrageous takes on this forum is alarming. Entertaining...but alarming!

We have three baths and one without a window. All have exhaust fans. I leave the light over the tub on at night in the one without a window, just so we won't fall in the toilet. ;) |

So the humidity is year round? Pollen? You can’t have that option in let’s say Nov thru May? There was a time when some parts of the ‘South’....people went to concerts or sporting events.....or college, just for the running water! |
All 3 bathrooms in our south of 44 veranda home have great exhaust fans. They move the air very well with little noise even set on the high setting. The main bedroom has a frosted window up high in the walk-in shower, and the small guest bathroom has a frosted window up above the bathtub. Neither window opens. There’s no window at all in the third bathroom that has a shower. We had a solatube installed in that one as well as in our laundry room. So glad we don’t have windows that open in our bathrooms.

I have noticed the homes that have a window in the shower becomes a ledge for all the shampoos and such used in the shower. Even though the windows are frosted you can clearly see what is behind the window….a little tacky to me, IMO.
|
Or just maybe it could be a safety reason for when we get hit with Hurricanes. just a guess.

Never ceases to amaze me how people go on and on about how awesome the weather is in Florida, how it was one of the #1 reasons they moved here. And then they spend most of their time inside with the windows closed and the A/C on. |

Not to mention that heat rises, and in the winter, the LAST thing you'd want is a 2-foot-circumference hole in your roof covered with plastic and no insulation. |

In CYV you have at least 5 window options. The design don’t not allow windows on neighboring side. |
