Inside or Out Laundry?

I have been on two LSV's. One where the laundry was in the house and the other where the laundry facility was in the garage.

I was wondering if people had a strong preference for the laundry unit in the house and the reasons why? Your input is greatly appreciated.

Just asking as it is one more thing to consider when deciding on purchasing a home in TV.

take your choice

since you lived in LSVs with both-- which one did YOU like? if you answer that you don't need input.

Only did laundry in the one on the inside.

I was there for a shorter second visit and didn't have the need to do laundry in the outside facility. I was too busy enjoying myself.

Pros and cons to each, 2B:

- Laundry in the garage gives you more useable space inside the house.....but less garage space.

- The interior of the house is climate controlled.......the garage isn't.

- Some washers and dryers are fairly loud when running - might be nice to have them in the garage.

- The dryer will generate a bit of heat as well. Decide where you'd like that heat to be.

Sandy wanted the washer and dryer in the house.........so that was that in our case!

Bill :)

Doing laundry in the garage in the middle of summer is not a pleasant experience. I've been there, done that, and it's one of the reasons we sold that house and bought another.

Even if you were to not consider the unpleasant weather conditions in the garage, something else to keep in mind is you never hear the dryer buzzer. You either have to keep running out there to check, or it stops and your clothes sit there and get wrinkled.

My opinion, having had both options, is to have an inside laundry.

deano_hoosier 05-04-2011 02:16 PM

Another consideration favoring inside laundry. If you have front load washer they tend to "breed" mildew unless you let them dry out after running them. Leaving the door and soap dispenser drawer open helps accomplish this, but in a hot/humid garage it would be less effective.

And my opinion is laundry in the garage - that's why we have choices so we can pick which best suits our need.
If you've ever washed a load with a piece of paper or kleenex left in the pocket, which my husband seems to love to do, you definitely appreciate the washer in the garage! You can shake the mess off the clothes and then nag him into cleaning the whole garage while he's sweeping up the mess. Hey, it works for me!!
We put in a ceiling fan above the laundry area which helps in the summer, but it really doesn't take long to get a load out and rush back indoors. Plus, you don't have the lint or the noise. I got a dryer that keeps fluffing after it dries so I don't have to be out there when it's done to prevent wrinkling.
Bottom line, it's all a matter of personal preference.

ladydoc 05-04-2011 02:35 PM

We just bought a house with an outside laundry....just did not matter to me. Then I started reading about all the complaining about outside laundries. I timed how long it took me to prepare a load ie: shove it in the machine, add soap, softener and close the door. Hit two buttons. 2.5 minutes. My washer has a timer that tells me exactly when a load was to be done. I have a kitchen time. SO not having to run back and forth and I truly believe 2.5 mintues is doable regardless of the weather. Also timed how long it took to throw the stuff in the dryer, which also as a timer. Another 2-3 minutes. Also doable in any weather conditions. If they did not tell me exactly how long it will take, I would just keep a log for a few loads to determine how long each cycle would take. Front load washers can be treated with any number of products to get rid of mildrew. So I just don't see this as a issue. Don't do laundry in the middle of the day.....

The bigger issue for me is not letting myself feel like an idiot for the decisions we made. I find you will always find someone telling you that this or that is a mistake about your home. We got an Anna Maria that we love. Yes it is damned with an outside laundry and my we are dumb for having a bit of grass. We wanted the grass for the dogs. We will pay the water bill and cut back elsewhere if we have to. And oh, by the way, your driveway on the anna maria is way too short, etc. SO here is the crux of it. Buy what YOU love.No home is perfect. Don't second guess yourself like I was doing because I was not being picky enough......Whatever YOU chose that you love is perfect for you!

Have had an outdoor laundry and an indoor laundry. I opted for indoor for a number of reasons. It's comfortable temp wise in the summer as well as the winter. My washer and dryer are both very quiet (both are brand new) so they don't make that annoying noise some washers can make. Never realized how noisy my older ones were because they were in the garage at my other house. When they arrived in Florida, I really had to be selective about the time I did laundry so we could talk or watch tv without having to shout over the sound. Because of the noise they made, hubby and I promised we'd not get them repaired if they "broke." Well, I now have that new and very quiet washer and dryer... ;)

mikeandnancy1112 05-04-2011 03:25 PM

We have lived in two different houses in the Villages.

We had the washer and dryer inside in the first house and now have them in the garage.

We definitely prefer them being in the garage. There is no noticeable noise and there is more space inside.

njbchbum 05-04-2011 03:37 PM

as a resident on the historic side of the villages, our laundry is reached by going outside of the house and into the utility room at the rear of the carport...at first i thought, yikes! i hafta leave the house to do laundry in the winter!...and then i thought, silly! you're in florida - so what! i was just happy that the laundry was on the same floor and not in a basement! lol

hope these responses give you a better idea of what you want/need for your home!

billybye 05-04-2011 03:46 PM

A lot depends on the model.
patio villa with laundry off kitchen is noisy, other ranches etc with laundry rooms (with full door) a little further away from living area are not as noisy.
we have a designer model with laundry room and full door - a lot of people move the laundry and/or a/c to garage and then miss the spacier garage - we like the laundry and a/c where it is, not in garage.
also like previously said, new upscale washer and dryers are a lot more quiet

Pturner 05-04-2011 03:52 PM

We have an extended (long) garage and I like having the washer and dryer out there. Doesn't add heat or noise or take up room inside. I find that walking into the garage for a few seconds to load or unload the washer or dryer is not a big deal. Seems more economical. That said, when we become frogs, it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me either way if the washer/dryer were inside or out, although I've gotten used to it and might have a slight preference for it being in garage.

redwitch 05-04-2011 07:10 PM

If it's a patio villa, I definitely vote for the garage. Nothing like having your kitchen be 10-15 degrees hotter in the summer cause the dryer is doing its job. YUCK!!! In the larger homes, I think it's a matter of preference, so long as the laundry room is not in the kitchen area and you can close the door to it while you're washing/drying.

Avista 05-04-2011 08:12 PM

I have had the laundry both in and out of the garage. Personally, I prefer the washer and dryer in the garage. Don't want to use house space for it. Also, It only takes a couple minutes to load a washer and dryer. I don't fold in the garage. Also, don't hear it out there.

Bogie Shooter 05-04-2011 09:06 PM

If you are going out to the garage to sneak a smoke....might as well do the laundry at the same time.:boom:

Ohiogirl 05-04-2011 09:20 PM

pros and cons

We have an inside laundry in the Bonita CYV model. It is noisy - there's a pocket door, but it's louvered. However, I think you get more space with an inside laundry, particularly the ones that have space on both walls.

We have an extra fridge, a shelf above that and the laundry tub, hooks on both sides of the door (our Villages coat closet), and cabinets above the washer/dryer, plus space (about 9-10 inches, beside the washing machine, for laundry soap, my yoga mat, and a small wastebasket, plus another 9-10 inch shelf with a place to hang clothes (to dry or just hang up fresh from the dryer).

None of that precious garage space is taken up by laundry stuff. I think I wouldn't mind a garage laundry except in the summer, when even 2-1/2 minutes is too long to be in the garage.

k2at 05-05-2011 04:23 AM

We have rented houses with Laundry in and out of the house. My wife and I prefer the laundry in the garage in that both washers and dryers make too much noise when they are being used. We used to wash or dry clothes in the house whenever we were leaving so we did not have to hear the noise. Finally bought a house with the laundry in the garage. Very satisfied.

Dbinac 05-05-2011 06:15 AM

Outside

Much to our surprise we prefer outside. Have had both and we feel outside is better.

ajdeck 05-05-2011 06:39 AM

Now ladydoc, that is what I call a nice honest answer and good message for all of us.

Thanks!
aj

batman911 05-05-2011 11:39 AM

If you have an inside laundry and the washer springs a leak while you are not home, you will wish you had garage laundry. An inside laundry leave you open to flooding the whole house.

rjm1cc 05-05-2011 11:48 AM

For those with the laundry in the garage, where do you fold the dried clothes and where do you do the ironing?

I fold and iron (if any) inside.

TednRobin 05-05-2011 01:56 PM

Iron? What's an Iron?

aljetmet 05-05-2011 02:50 PM

laundry location

Good thing I have the best wife in the world cause I only do laundry when she travels. I always drop clothes on the floor so if we had garage laundry it would be the end of me...

Also interestingly, I 've read comments concerning noise and heat (summer time) from the dryer regarding inside laundry.

Memphis is hotter than TV in the summer. Our TV room shares the wall with our laundry room. We have a door but we never close it. Noise (we have a nice home theater and we have it turned up) or heat does not bother us.

Anyway we both want inside laundry.

My mom used to iron everything she could lay her hands on. Me...well I can go 2 or 3 weeks before something needs to be ironed. Sorry Mom! :spoken:

Laundry choices

I would have loved to have Grantham (3 brm cyv) however we didn't see any available in our price range that had suitable yard space in a location we liked. So we settled on a Beauregard that had the washer/dryer locate just on the other side of the door from the kitched to the garage. I found it convenient in the rental we had... I hope it will work out for us once we finally get down there!

aljetmet. This is really simple,so pay attention, it won't take long.

I think that your wife deserves the best husband in the world.

Pick up just the dark colored things off the floor and throw them in the washer. Add some Tide. Turn the washer on. Then when the cycle stops, throw them in the dryer for about a half an hour, if they are still damp hang them up. If they are dry hang them up.

Your inner self, your general knowledge and your sex life will improve almost immediately.

Kindest wishes,
Gracie

runnermi 05-06-2011 09:22 AM

The only thing I wondered about is it harder on the washer and dryer itself being in a hot and humid environment. I have a Florida friend (not in TV) who tells me it will shorten the life of the washer and dryer.

Right now, mine is in the basement (Michigan). I don't have the buzzer on because when I am down there working (quilting stuff in the sewing cave), it scares the pants off of me when it goes off. I have jumped at least a foot and should have know it was ready to buzz.

On the subject of irons... I never took one out of the closet until I started quilting. If I pulled something out of the dryer and it was wrinkled, I threw it back into the wash. Yup, I am terrible. :D

For less about $50 you can get a 20 year hose.

Didn't say I din't know how to do it. I'm just clumsy. Things have been just fine since 1973. What's not broke should not be tried to be fixed.

Talking about ironing. My mom taught me to iron when I was 7. Had top of my right hand burnt and remember the pain and blisters vividly. I was well trained.
Anyway. Since 1975 I'm waiting for my wife to cut her first blade of grass.

Have had a riding mower since 1989. Which will be retired at the end of 2012 season. (I hope)

Yippie. You can chastise me next spring when we come in to snoop around again. Third Friday of the month. Don't make any changes!

Hi Nitakk

have experienced the shredded kleenex a time or two BUT since we replaced w/d with new LG front load, kleenex doesn't shred, it's a wonderful life....Also, in another thread, must suggest putting a window/door between garage and laundry room, so you don't get wacked by your spouse as he enters laundry room, NOT a pretty sight!:1rotfl::1rotfl:

Russ_Boston 05-07-2011 07:06 AM

To my knowledge this is not a choice with any new designer model. For example my Begonia has a laundry room that is just as you come in from the garage. It has its own storage, overhead cabinets and sink. There is a door to block off most of the noise to the main part of the house. I would think that IF there was ever a broken hose that the tilt of the room would have the water run into the garage (but I'm not sure about that).

I've rented CYV with both. We preferred the outside one due to noise and space issues.

ssmith 05-07-2011 07:36 AM

a few thoughts

Hey Mr Russ...I think they are talking about the Villas.... ie Stoneybrook

Funny story for GG and Aljetmet. My hubby used to expect me to do all the laundry... but I still did things like mow. Well it occurred to me that my husband has an Engineering degree from Purdue University and BTW laundry is not Rocket Science!!! so well he saw my point and has helped ever since.
Whatever works for you!

Russ_Boston 05-07-2011 08:18 AM

I know but someone did mention something about other homes and options. Don't think you have an option on designer.

Barefoot 05-07-2011 09:48 AM

We've had laundry in the garage (in a CYV) and now we have laundry in our house next to the master bedroom. Very conveniently located. I much prefer the inside laundry for many reasons. Of course, not all of you have husbands like mine. He would unexpectedly use the garage door opener from outside to open the garage door. And there I would be, caught in the garage, doing laundry in my unmentionables. Yikes.
