Stickers on mailboxes

Hubby and I couldn't help but notice the other day that all the stickers at the St. James mailboxes have all been removed.

Does anyone know what the rules are regarding this? Are they not allowed by TV or have the sticker police come out in the middle of the night and wiped clean all the stickers? Must have taken a bit of time.

Are all the boxes throughout the villages clear of all stickers?

Maybe tonight I will bring my rules and regulations booklet into bed to read.

They cetainly make life easier, without a doubt. Since St James is newer that may be a new restriction. St Charles, as of this evening, is still decorated with stickers, and the like. I recently said that if I have to remember another password or key I'll exceed overload.

I live in Bonnybrook and the stickers are still on the mailboxes.

Stickers

Maybe someone complained to the mail police. I do believe they're Post Office property. You can't put stickers on a pst office box in the Post Office.

r_foye 06-09-2011 10:24 PM

If they take the stickers off I will never find my mail box.

Hadley Too

They removed ours 2 years ago in Hadley.

jblum315 06-10-2011 12:15 AM

my granddaughter put the sticker on my mailbox and it always makes me think of her. If they take it off my day will be a little less pleasant

robbie 06-10-2011 06:26 AM

Just closed last week in buttonwood and asked about the mailbox stickers....told it was post office property and against the law to decorate mailbox....doesn't seem very "village"ish to me :swear:

Would it be "villageish" to break the law?

Pa & Giggi 06-10-2011 06:45 AM

Wellll, someone wasn't in a good mood when they came possibly from the post office dept and saw the stickers. There weren't too many as this is still a new area and none of them were really that big. Ours mailbox was in the back where you had to go out of your way to see it, at the bottom. It was a "thin blue line". We had special ordered it from an online catalog company. I would rather they had inserted a note in our mailbox telling us that we had to remove the stickers, than to handle it in this manner. That is my opinion.

It does not seem that hard to remember you box number

Challenger 06-10-2011 09:42 AM

I'm sure that the Developer is behind this. He has special influence with he Post Office- Everywhere I have ever lived the rule was "don't stick stuff on US Government Property"

If everybody put their stickers on, the place would look like a circus wagon ,and we do not want that

:agree: Village of Amelia still has stickers as of yesterday. Very messy-looking. I thought the stickers were used by people who rent out their homes but from reading these posts I was wrong. Write the # down on a piece of paper & keep it in your golfcart and/or car.

It's not. I don't have a good memory but was able to recognize my box without the number after the second visit! IMHO stickers in most cases are just a vanity thing and not a necessity!

Imo.....

The internet is a wondrous place…..one can find the answer to any question they might have.

Unfortunately you will not always receive a correct answer. There is always someone ready to provide an answer without really knowing the question.

Some observations on this thread!!!

• First: I have not been able to find out who owns the mailboxes; …The USPS, the developer or the VCDD’s. Has anoyone else?
I might believe it’s the VCDD’s (that’s us) but I cannot find out online if that’s true.

• Secondly, If it’s not the USPS, I might believe that it is the owner’s right to decorate their mailboxes….you see decorative mailboxes all over the country. Therefore it might be “Villagish” and NOT against the law.

• Someone here observed that “It does not seem that hard to remember your box number” but it might be for other people and boy the stickers sure make it easier.

• 20 some odd years that The Villages has been here and everyone has NOT put stickers so it does not look like a “circus wagon.”

If it’s not broken…….

Russ_Boston 06-10-2011 01:50 PM

Put a number on your key if you can't remember. Or if you don't want it getting stolen then put the number plus 10 or something like that. To be honest I don't know my number but I do know which box it is. After the first couple of times do you really look for the number anymore?

IMHO the stickers look awful. Our new Buttonwood station must have 15% or so covered already. And with all the Steeler fans we seem to have I don't know how they know which sticker is theirs anyway!:)

Bogie Shooter 06-10-2011 02:16 PM

I called District Property Management and was told the boxes belong to USPS.
USPS customer service 800-275-8777.........good luck.

swrinfla 06-10-2011 03:01 PM

I've always been positive that the whole facility belongs to USPS. Accordingly, they have the right to ban stickers or whatever!

That said, there've been stickers on Sunset Pointe boxes from the very beginning! Maybe there's a new campaign to get rid of them?

Oddly, the stickers on my box were apparently put there by my neighbor who copes with my mail when I'm away. I assumed so she'd know which was mine. But, the key she uses has the number on it. And, since she's only next door, I have to think that her box is either above mine, or below it!

Ah, well, I'd better leave that subject alone! :loco:

Mail box

Look at your mailbox key it says property of USPS.

blondie56 06-10-2011 05:50 PM

sorry, but I don't understand the difference.....................
People decorate their "regular" mailboxes placed in front of their homes, by painting pictures on them, decorating at Christmas time etc.
So what is the BIG deal of us puttin a "little" sticker on our "little" box to help identify upon MANY boxes at the mail drops!
Maybe they should just let us have a mailbox in front of our home so could deviver to EACH home and then they might leave things alone!
Just my humble opinion

Don't those "regular" mailboxes belong to the people who place them in front of their homes?
If everyone put a sticker on their "little" box, how would you find yours??

Those regular mailboxes are called rural or residential mail boxes and they belong to the Postal Service once installed. You however are responsible for taking care of them and making sure they are in compliance with USPS regulations.

Polo Ridge, same zip code, and lots of stickers. look like they hv been there for years. No Big deal.

skyguy79 06-10-2011 10:22 PM

When I get back to TV I'm gonna get and put a sticker on my postal box that sez:
NO
STICKERS
ALLOWED
ON THIS BOX

madrose 06-10-2011 10:39 PM

Perhaps it isn't 'villagish' to break the law, but the inconsistencies from Village to Village seem wrong. Glenbrook Post Office has stickers everywhere. ?????

Maybe some people who cant remember there box # without a sticker should put a sticker on there favorite seat for happy hour or a sticker on there front door, your golf cart, etc. lets make TV look like Ding Dong School. Why not paint your box a different color. I cant believe the big bad govt would let me paint their mail box

blondie56 06-11-2011 10:02 AM

how something so silly can cause so much ruckus!
Well i contacted a friend of mine who is a postal worker in NJ who delivers mail and has been for the past 35 yrs or so. The Federal law states that stickers ARE ok as well as standing mailbox covers that are sold in catalogs. As long as as the Postal worker can open the box, get to it and no bees or wasps,LOL, are inside it, its ok!
In regards to several postings of the NEED for some us to place a sticker on our box rather than remember the number of our box, with the slight inconvienience of having to stop by a mailbox drop to pick up my mail I myself enjoy the quick recognition of my mailbox so I have more time to enjoy the activites offered here in the Villages!
As long as the stickers are in good taste and offend no one I don't see where there is any llaws beeing violated here, unless it's the Villages alone that it trying to outlaw them.:spoken:

Stickers are very unsightley on mailboxes, I wish they would wipe ours off.

I believe your friend is referring to "rural" type mailboxes that are individual.

The Postal Service is required to do annual safety checks of all boxes that they have installed. As a part of that process boxes are often cleaned and/or repainted. Because most of the boxes here are somewhat protected they rarely get repainted but I have seen them cleaned which may be what is happening when those stickers disappear.

As an alternative you could solve the identification problem without putting a sticker on your mailbox. Simply put a sticker on the mailbox below yours that points up to your mailbox!

Or maybe you could do something catchy with numbers - like maybe your age. If you are 57 and your box is the 5th from the top and 7 rows over you'd be set. (Of course next year you are in deep trouble with your neighbor.)

Or maybe you could place a powerful flashlight in your box, your's would be the one shinning all the time.

Or if your box number is 36678 you could remember you turned 36 in June of 1978.

Or give your neighbor your box number and ask them to pick up your mail.

Or take a photo of your mailbox with your phone camera.

Or never lock your mailbox.

The possibilities that do not include stickers are endless.

dillywho 06-11-2011 01:02 PM

Same Stickers

We don't have a sticker on ours, but there are several around it that do....identical ones. How is that helpful for identification? Just asking....

Pa & Giggi 06-11-2011 03:11 PM

Not the Post Office

Hubby ran into the mailman when he went to get the mail today so he mentioned the stickers being wiped cleaned from all the boxes. The mailman said that the Post Office does NOT remove any stickers from the boxes.

So I guess removing the stickers would mean that someone is tampering with postal/federal property and if they are caught they can be punished accordingly.

I just think that people should have better things to do than go around and clean stickers off of mailboxes that don't belong to them. By the way I seldom go to our mailbox, so I don't know our mailbox number by memory. Add that to my neurological deficiencies that make it difficult for me to remember and I just found that this was a great help.
