Colliision Info

There is an article in today's Sun (p. 5A) stating cart collided with Jeep Wrangler at Buena Vista, just south of 466A.
At traffic circle, the cart entered the southbound lane, traveling in the wrong direction and collided with Jeep
ejecting the golf cart occupants.
Male and female occupants, in late 60's or early 70's, are in critical condition, one in Leesburg and one in Orlando.
Driver of Jeep was uninjured.
So sad and hoping all will end well for the injured.

Update

Thanks for the update Island Girl. Hope all comes out OK.

Very sad news...

One has to wonder how the heck a golf cart got south of 466A on BV? Maybe it was an LSV or they were VERY lost? Not important to the folks or their families, but makes me wonder.....

Bill and AJ,

We see carts down there quite frequently. I think folks are exploring the "new" section and think that it is OK for them to be on the road.....

Having seen a horrible accident last week, I can't imagine how much worse this was.

Since the golf cart was on Buena Vista in a traffic circle, he was in the wrong unless it was a street legal cart - and still in the wrong since he was going in the wrong direction in the traffic circle.

You do have to wonder what the heck they were doing on Buena Vista south of 466A at 9:15 at night. No reason to be there at night. No reason to be going in the wrong direction of a traffic circle, either.

Katzbox is probably right, as usual. People go down to explore the new area, perhaps at night because there is no security person there to stop them. Sadly, being in an area that is not yet open, they might have thought there would be no other traffic, and tried to take a short cut back. It was not to be.

This is how curiosity can kill the cat. It saddens me that this has happened. I hope that the survivor is OK. Let's all be extra careful.

elevatorman 06-17-2011 09:33 AM

Can a street legal cart cross 466A? If a cart uses a tunnel there are barricades on the cart path at BV.

YES ... I do in my GEM all the time ...

2BNTV 06-17-2011 10:19 AM

I am so sad to hear this happened. I wish a speedy and full recovery for the injured people.

A sad reminder for all, (especially wannabees and newbies), to be careful while operating a golf cart in TV.

Tbugs 06-17-2011 11:48 AM

It obviously was NOT a street legal cart since both people were thrown out of the cart. A street legal requires seat belts and to be worn. So, this was totally wrong. Being on a public road (Buena Vista) not in a street legal cart as well as turning the wrong way in a traffic circle.

Yes, I do wish the people a full recovery.

memason 06-17-2011 12:21 PM

Not sure what exploring anyone would be doing on Buena Vista, south of 466A. There isn't anything down there. Not sure that part is blocked to the cart path, since traffic is using BV to get to 44. Morse Blvd cart trail is blocked and prevents carts from going down to the new Sanibel addition.

One evening the blockade, on Morse, was open, so the wife and I took a drive down to the first roundabout, where the guard came and made us exit our cart. We were then handcuffed and strip searched, before they released us.

We've been driving down there every night now to see if we can get in again....

Doesn't mean they were wearing them.

Just sayin'

jdsl1998 06-17-2011 01:23 PM

My heart goes out for everyone concerned. I think about seat belts for our cart but somehow never get around to it. Very sad.

That sounds terrible and we are so sorry to hear about this accident. The one thing we noticed while at The Villages was the number of young kids who were allowed to drive the golf carts. Some definitely were not 14 years old (which is also too young) as we were told the age limit is. The golf cars aren't toys. We were also surprised at all the roundabouts, knowing that the older we get the easier we become confused.

ajbrown 06-17-2011 02:59 PM

memason: thanks for the laughs.

The only reason I ask about how a cart would be on BV south of 466A is you have to travel on BV from back by Bailey Trail. You cannot get around the barricade on BV from the cart path on 466A like you can at Morse and 466A.

Well.... there is one other way, but I thought only Caly and I knew of and used that one :evil6:

homeball 06-17-2011 03:29 PM

Going in the wrong direction is not limited to golf cart traffic. A few times at night I've had cars on BV traveling in the wrong direction and coming head on to me. One wonders what the heck they could be thinking. Nothing more scary than looking down the line and be starring at a pair of headlights that you shouldn't be seeing in the first place if they were on the correct side of the street. And there are still some illegal golf carts riding up and down Morse and BV. Driving around here can be scary at times.

Where did you read she said they were young kids? She did not say those involved in the accident were young kids. She was merely pointing out another disturbing reality that goes on in The Villages with young kids driving golf carts

Connie Cockcroft 06-18-2011 06:31 AM

I didn't mean to imply this accident was involving kids. I only meant to say golf cars are dangerous, and we see a lot of children driving them. It is a wonder there aren't more accidents because of young kids driving them.

The gentleman in the golf cart accident passed away this afternoon. His wife is still in critical condition. They are from Duval. Have friends that are relatives.

Prayers for the family.
