Coyotes in Villages

A couple days ago, I was driving south on BV about 1/4 from CR 42 when I coyote ran across the road. I slowed down to watch as he ran west across the fairway towards the horse farms and woods off 42. I lived in Michigan ( on a farm in a rural area) and have seen coyotes a few times up there but was startled to see one here. It appeared to be an adult, mottled grey in color and was running full out - never broke stride. Some people in a golf cart also stopped to watch.
I googled "coyotes in Central Fl" and learned that they have been becoming a problem here for farmers, etc. A photographer posted pics of ones in Lake County and they have become a pest around the Tampa area. Could this be why the feral cats from the nearby horse farms have not been seen lately? Usually tcoyotes are most active at dusk or night but this was about 2pm. Has anyone else seen one in TV?

Feral cats in general

I wouldn't mind having coyotes cull some of those feral cat packs.... my 86 year old Stepdad in Palm Harbor had a bite taken out of his calf muscle in a preserve parking lot by one of those wild grammimals.
It was hiding under his car and attacked his leg as he got in the car to leave. NOT a fun afternoon, poor guy!
But, I think a coyote would have to be pretty hungry to consider taking on a pack.... bunnies and mices have to be a tad less ornery!

pooh 08-01-2011 11:11 AM

In CA we'd often see coyotes during the day. One particular afternoon, a coyote was walking down our street, in the middle. A car approached the animal and it stopped and would not move. The lady finally backed up and headed off in the direction she came from, taking a different route to her destination.

They do enjoy cat meals, a few of our neighbors lost their kitties to coyotes. A friend also lost his small dog....the coyote jumped the fence, grabbed the pup and then headed out. Maybe that is indeed the reason there seem to be fewer feral cats.

Coyotes also reside in the urban twin cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul! Have relatives that have heard them in wooded areas.

dfn8tly 08-01-2011 12:07 PM

Coyotes are quite adaptable and easily become comfortable in urban areas where they have access to food and shelter. Just a couple of nights ago when we had all that lightening I heard a coyote pup barking in a wooded area behind my home. My guess is that he was frightened. So, do we have them in TV? I'd be very surprised if we don't.

coyotes

we do have them in TV , one killed my neighbors dog at Pelican golf course.

Bambi 08-01-2011 02:32 PM

I just returned from taking my dog for his annual exam at Mulberry Vet. clinic. I asked the vet about them and she said that her partner jogs in the Village of Calumet and has seen them. This is where I saw the coyote a couple of days ago.

jackz 08-01-2011 03:05 PM

I heard there might be a few "Cougars" in The Villages but was not aware of coyotes. Learn something new everyday...

KathieI 08-01-2011 03:24 PM

I saw a coyote running the other night on Buena Vista around 1am. I think it was somewhere near the Polo fields, but I'm not 100% sure. He was startled by my car, but just kept on running into the bush. Looked like a skinny-medium-sized dog. A friend lives in Lady Lake in a rural area and has been losing her chickens to coyote's for the last few weeks.

PS, JackZ,,,, you're baaadddd!!!!

Chi-Town 08-01-2011 03:50 PM

I saw a coyote during the day at BV and Rainey Trail on the golf course. I have a friend up north who lives on a golf course and hears them at night. He says that it is a combination of yipping, howling, and crying.

The way I heard it there are quite a few Cougars in TV:1rotfl:

I did see a coyote walking down the fairway behind my house one arly morning

AAlso had a wild boar tear up my yard two years in a row

Ilived just southwest of Minneapolis and coyotes roamed the area.

Now I live in Florida and see alligators ever day.

The end:D

There have been many sightings of coyotes and racoons around TV, and some residents have seen panthers. The Developers have taken away their natural habitat. I know that it's inevitable progress, and wild animals can be dangerous to small animals and children. But I feel sorry for them.

Boudicca 08-01-2011 05:08 PM

Coyote

Saw one on the country road between Buttonwood Run and "outside" TV's.

collie1228 08-01-2011 06:02 PM

I occasionally hunt coyotes in Upstate NY. Let me assure you, no "pack" of feral cats could stop a coyote from decimating the pack's population, even if there were 100 cats in the pack. It would be like the meanest dog you've ever seen going after the cats. No contest, no mercy. Coyotes are an efficient predator. There is little danger to humans or to most dogs, but if I was out walking a ten pound dog at dusk near uninhabited areas where coyotes are known to live, I'd want to be carrying a weapon or a baseball bat. Your dog could be in danger.

Helene2008 08-01-2011 06:44 PM

Several of my neighbors have seen them in Bonita. My cat loves being on the lanai, but she's not allowed out there at nightime anymore.

ladydoc 08-01-2011 06:58 PM

This is exactly why I would not trust an underground containment system for my dogs. It might keep them in, but it won't keep anything out. We got a CYV because we wanted them in a solid fenced in yard. They run our lives, what can I say?

BigLew 08-01-2011 06:58 PM

to the all too quickly morally indignant....

Coyotes in TV

I have not seen a coyote, I was emailed a picture of a bobcat that was seen in Springdale. I've been told it has been seen on the Lopez golf course.

MelZ 08-01-2011 07:50 PM

Saw one cross Morse near Mallory Golf course , it ran right across the road late at night.

A few years ago my nephew and his wife were trying to adopt a kitten from the local SPCA in Costa Mesa, CA. They were asked if the kitten would be strictly an indoor cat and they said that it would be allowed to go in their yard that had a ten foot concrete wall around it. The SPCA wouldn't let them have a kitten until they agreed to not let the kitten out in the yard and told them that coyotes can jump ten foot walls!

PS: Foxes like cats and small dogs too.

We hear them at night in certain locations but they are called coy dogs up here......we also have fox that walk down the road; seemingly minding their own business. However, in Colorado the coyote warnings go out and parents with young children have to keep them indoors. I wonder if the ones in TV are the same type? In Boulder, CO. mountain lions have been known to come down into town. Seems the wildlife is encroaching on neighborhoods all over.

duffysmom 08-03-2011 01:35 PM

Senior i think people are encroaching on their neighborhoods. Welcome, I'm enjoying your notes.

There was what golfers said was a coyote on the Belmont golf course this morning at about 9:00 a.m.

It was in a big hurry running to the field on the other side of the golf course from the Lynnhaven Postal center.

I had my dog in tow at the postal station and thankfully the coyote just kept running and paid no attention to my dog's one bark at it.

I had thought it was a lost dog when I first saw it crossing Churchill Downs as it looked very much like a big boned lanky German Shepard which had not been fed very well.

I did get a good look at it though but not enough to tell if it had the coyote scimitar shaped teeth. I suppose I could defintely tell you it was a coyote though.

The golfers would have gotten a much longer view of it though as it was running across the golf course.

I have only seen a coyote once before in the Villages and this was late at night on this same golf course but near Morven Parkway near the Pimilco Rec Center.

Ground Hog!

Senior,

Please tell me there is not Ground Hogs Burrowing under the slabs in TV!

I cost me over $250.00 to trap them out from under our Cellar and Garage Pad here in NY last year!

If so I want to adopt at Eagle or Coyote to eat them things! They can destroy a foundation.

The coyote I saw at Lynnhaven postal center yesterday morning...

...looked a lot like one of these from this collection of coyotes killed in FL. "Bobby's coyote" is the closest.

Note the picture of the coyote's teeth.

coyotes

We may have had some in Sunset Point several trash bags have been torn up and spred around. I was walking and others stated they had seen one in the area.

1. Also called prairie wolf. a buffy-gray, wolflike canid, Canis latrans, of North America, distinguished from the wolf by its relatively small size and its slender build, large ears, and narrow muzzle.

2. Slang . a contemptible person, especially an avaricious or dishonest one.

3. American Indian Legend . the coyote regarded as a culture hero and trickster by American Indian tribes of the West.

4. Slang . a person who smuggles Mexican nationals across the border into the U.S. for a fee.

5. Mature woman who enjoys the company of a younger man.

buggyone 12-30-2011 10:36 AM

A coyote will not come near a person. You may see one at dawn or dusk but they are not going to attack a person.

If your small dog or cat is outside by itself (leashed to a stake or out wandering) they are fair game for a coyote. Garbage bags are also a food source for the coyote.

There are plenty of living areas for a coyote in The Villages with all the preserve areas. It is called an eco-system for a good reason.

Enjoy the wildlife here and do not be scared of a coyote. I personally would be more frightened of the occasional Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes that reach about 6 feet in length.

A coyote will not NORMALLY come near a person. But with any animal wild or domestic the potential for abnormal behavior is there. That's why there are signs saying "Don't feed the wildlife".

Just stay aware of your surroundings and if you come across a unknown animal be wary and have an escape in mind if needed

It is true that coyotes will normally avoid people, and there is lots of prey available in the "open space environmental" areas. But Harry is right. If they've been fed by people, or they have rabies, they can be quite aggressive. I used to have a horse farm for 25 years. I've know coyotes to take cats off decks, and to chase and injure dogs. No need to get in a panic, just be cautious. Especially if you back on a golf course or open space.

Villages PL 12-30-2011 04:19 PM

I saw a fox, during the day, on East Schwartz Blvd.. It was calmly walking down the middle of the road and at first I thought it was a dog. Also, my neighbor reported seeing large paw prints on her car. She thought it might have been a Florida panther. This was several years ago, before I moved.

John_W 12-30-2011 04:36 PM

Everytime I play golf at Mallory or Havana and I'm in one of the sand traps along Morse I'll see paw prints across the sand trap.
