Creation of a TOTV Clique
As a followup to the "Rats and Alligators" topic, I am making a motion that all members of TOTV automatically become members of "The Clique!" Please cast you vote in this poll!
|
count me in! Since the meetings are at Crispers...could the meetings be called "Crispers Cliquers Club Coffee Klatch"?
|
Count me in, but only if we spell it Clicker, since we are, after all, on the computers most of the time. LOL I voted for all of them as I could not make up my mind which one would be the best. Hey, I think I will run for congress.
Trish, have you tried to say that really fast five times. *S* |

I really don't understand this thread??? Since when do we want to form a "clique" on TOTV?? If that had been the case back in '07, I never would have been accepted as a newbie here on totv... We have always kept our arms open to all new people as they come here to enjoy their retirement life, we have never turned our backs or made "newbies" to feel uncomfortable or not welcomed to join us. I really think this is the wrong attitude to take. To those who want to form a clique, so be it. I, for one, will never take that approach. When I have been in attendance at Crispers, we accept and welcome newbies and consider them immediately to be part of the family... Please explain to me why we would suddenly want to form a closed clique?? Doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I'm totally misunderstanding the entire message in this thread, but if I am, please explain. This is not a good reflection to any newcomers...

Not understanding too!

chiloutThis is a joke!! I think it was in response to someone commenting about there being "cliques" on TOTV. If you analyze the choices, you'll realize they are all meant to be funny....there are no dues on TOTV. It's all done tongue in cheek and I thought it was quite amusing.

People in the Rats and Alligators thread sympathized with Patlyn, who says she's done with this board and will not come back, because her identity and motives were questioned and made to look suspicious for posting concerns about seeing more rats lately. A few others agreed that there is indeed a "clique" (Inner Circle) here. I thought "frisking people at the door" described it well. Just because you know more about TV or don't like somebody's opinion does not mean they should be treated as "suspect" or shunned when posting a comment or question. I'm going to duck now, because of incoming rotten tomatoes. |
Kathie,
Thanks for being a truly wonderful person. I don't find this thread funny but I think it is an attempt to mock. The world is full of wonderful people and a few jerks. Guess its the same with this board. |
Cliques
I for one think that TOTV does not have cliques, BUT................I truly believe and have experienced cliques in so many areas of TV. Anything that I have tried to get into, I have had to be very persistent and keep going back to, even when my heart pounded and I could hardly breathe because I was so intimidated and felt like I was intruding on a group that was not welcoming and friendly. I have since found out that is exactly what I have to do, keep going back until my face becomes familiar to everyone. When I see a newbie in the different activities that I am into I practically run to them to make them feel welcome. There just is not a worse feeling than feeling like you are not welcome. I'm talking about, water volleyball, pickleball, different exercise classes, line dancing, and the list goes on. NO MORE CLIQUES PLEASE! That is the only part of TV that I HATE! Once in, your in, but getting there is so intimidating and difficult. Ok, thanks for listening and hearing me vent!!!!!!!!

Does this mean.... I'm not going to be able to do my secret handshake????:D

Bravo to Kathie !!
As an outsider who remains the everlasting wannabee ~~ I perceived this topic to be an attempt at humor... however, the word CLIQUE represents something less than funny !! There were cliques when we were in school and I'm sure there are cliques everywhere people get together in clubs, communities, classes, especially on internet forums. :D
Thank goodness for people like Kathie who graciously welcome newbies :BigApplause: |

Long time no see - welcome back. Just noticed your comment about being with Bambi; we currently have a small herd eating the wife's roses, any recommendations about protecting the roses from the dears. Thanks Chuck |

If people were reading the posts that led up to this poll and if they have been reading my many post over the past months since I joined TOTV, then I feel they should have realized that I'm not a clique type of person nor an advocate of cliques. If they haven't then I can somewhat understand their reaction to a degree. I mostly try to inject humor in most of what I post and now I have doubts as to weither it's appreciated enough to continue. I'll let future reactions confirm or dispell those doubts! http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos...7_951906_s.jpg |

What you didn't think my response was funny??? Go back and read it again... Maybe you will get it if you read it a few times!! :cryin2: |
I believe that there have been "invented" posters with made up personalities placed on this forum to engender posts and to stir the pot.
I think that it added a certain amount of posts because people would get all stirred up about it. I think the added posts were thought to add to the desirability of the forum and the added posts would be a magnet for advertisers. When I see a post by a poster with very few posts that start something rather controversial, I become suspicious that it is a made up person. There are also people who have been removed from this board for good reasons or bad that return with new names. I see no harm in that at all. I personally do not see a clique if a clique means that a group of people know each other off of this forum and belittle and talk down about others. That is just plain mean. We have all felt left out at times and insecure at times and it does not feel nice at all. I see a lot of funny and not so funny sarcasm that may or may not be taken wrong by people not seeing it was meant to be humorous. There are VERY few unkind people who post here. This forum is mostly welcoming and caring and kind. We do have differing opinions on almost everything, but mostly I see people who post without putting others down. We have far more serious things to worry about than cliques on this forum. |

[QUOTE=skyguy79;377359]Thank you Trish! You hit the nail right on the head and did not join the "clique" of those who I feel unfairly criticized me when I was only exercising my humor by spoofing my distaste for cliques.

I'll let future reactions confirm or dispell those doubts! Skyguy: I also understood your spoof and appreciated your humor. Apparently, this particular spoof hit a nerve of many TOTVers, a nerve that I am confident you did not intend coming anywhere near. That said, it is logical and understandable that anyone who has felt the sting of being shunned by a group for no apparent reason would react negatively to the work "clique". Your self-assessment is on-target. You entertain and educate far more often than you ever offend. Don't back off bc one attempt at humor wasn't well received by some folks. Oh well. You tried. Your spoof was based on a good concept that was undone by a painful word to some. Even the best professional comedians and pundits have a bad joke or two along the way. Get back on that horse! Ride tall. |

Of course your post was funny. I'm guessing that Skyguy wasn't referring to you. Now, about that secret handshake... ;) |

Somehow I missed all of the drama contained in the Rats and Alligators post, and the spillover of emotions to this post.
A lot of pain and anger being expressed by more than one of us. That indicates to me that something negative is being conveyed through threads and posts, whether intended by the writer, or not. The written word often fails to accurately convey intonation and connation of the writer. Consequently, a reader may easily wrongly infer or interpret a writer's message. Forums, given the prevalence of the informal writing style and the anonimity of the writers who employ that style, provide an environment in which reader's inferences clash with writer's implications, often culminating in heated confrontations and personal insults. Moving on....my position regarding cliques is accurately summed up by paraphrasing Groucho: I wouldn't want to join a clique that would include me as a member. |

I'm really not getting any of this. Why is there so much sensitivity and hurt feelings? It is clearly a joke. I thought I was talking with a bunch of people that just wanted to express their pleasure with living in TV...now it's getting to be like high school. Do we really have to be that careful of everything we post? I didn't, at any time, see anyone insulting or ridiculing anyone. Think I may go back to just lurking...I'm getting paranoid about posting.

See my comment about the clique in the Rats thread (a response to Larry). It says it all for me.

This poll is great!

This is what it boils down to....the second part of what Tony the Moderator said on July 6:
"The forum is open to everyone and we have not appointed any gate keepers." He didn't mention "appointed gatekeepers" for no reason. Some do take it upon themselves to "control" and "inspect" those who enter. |

With what you quoted, I was reminded what was on my mind as the serious message that I started out to make it through the use of humor. It was the part that says "I am making a motion that all members of TOTV automatically become members of "The Clique!" That statement was honestly meant to convey or suggest that if ALL members of TOTV were part of the so called clique, then there would in reality be no such clicque since no one would be left out and there could be no such clique! Did I go over peoples heads? Perhaps! But I hope this clearifies my thoughts and where I was coming from in the first place! I've experienced being on the outside of cliques my entire adult life and probably more so than most because of weight problems and physical limitations, but I rarely complain about that. I don't like clicques, never have! But at the same time, I don't let them upset me or get to me the way some others do! I hope people will understand me now and I get no more indirect, thinly veiled implications that I'm one of the "TOTV" jerks as one person rudely did! Again, thanks for your comments Kim! |

Trish please don't go back to lurking as I enjoy your post and sense of humor and I'm sure others do too. I too took it as a joke but obviously the word clique is upsetting to some and understandably so. It seems no matter where you go in social situations there are always going to be cliques, that is just the way life is. I have ran across cliques countless times throughout life. Most times I am able to join the clique if I choose too. The question becomes which group of people do I want to be friends with. Who do I enjoy being with the most and share the same interest I do. When you think of it that way its not really a clique, rather a group of people you choose to associate with. As for the forum and the sensitivity on this subject and many other topics, that is normal. Anytime you have a lot of people they will have different opinions and that is okay too. Keep posting and being you ! |

I will be so grateful to hear more of what you both have to say on any subject. Kindest wishes, Gracie |

very very very well said............. |
Hmmmm....as one who was always on the outside of the inner circle as a child, teen, and young adult.....probably as even a middle adult I am finally getting used to my seat out here in left field.....it's kind of cozy watching everyone else compete.....the only thing is I need some popcorn or ice cream every now and then to stay happy. Unfortunately I sometimes think my quirky sense of humor is what has put me in left field.....some people just don't get it and in my humble opinion just don't know how to relax and not take life, themselves or others so seriously....that all said I love reading peoples opinions and thoughts here on TOTV. I also love a lot of the humor I see here. Keep it up and I hope one day to meet many of you in person.
Now as to that clique.....I'm not sure I would now how to behave if I was inside that inner circle.....could someone teach me???? Suzanne |

Just a quick thought, you mentioned that there are many cliques at events there in TV. Is that unusual. I guess what I mean is that I have moved often and find it takes some time to break into the crowd of regulars....not that they exclude on purpose but just don't go over board to include newbes. Is that the case there? Seems you have persevered. Also wonder if this is more prevalent if you live in a very long established neighborhood?
