Can someone recommend a place that serves some good fish and chips?

Athens Greek Restaraunt in Spanish Springs offers a huge piece of haddock with french fries and cole slaw on Wed and Fri nights for $10.99. I belive it to be a great deal. And if you are a new englander then you know that haddock is the only fish to have!! Try it-I think you'll love it.

Fish and chips is very good at Bone Fish grill.

The Lighthouse has good fried haddock. And, Cracker Barrel has really good fried fish on Friday.

I'm sure no place has vinegar for the fries!

Five Guys has malt vinegar. so does Athens as I recall

Ditto, Lighthouse has malt vinegar on the tables.

The Lighthouse fish & chips are good, but the best I've had recently were at Epcot at Disney World in the United Kingdom pavilion at The Rose & Crown Restaurant.

If you make a trip to Disney's Epcot don't miss these if you're a fish & chips fan.

But they're really expensive when you add in the park admission!!

Cracker Barrell has malt vinegar.

Beef O'Brady's has a great fish & chips basket and they have malt vinegar as well.

Ramshackle Cafe in Leesburg has very good fish and chips.

Never thought of it that way :) But if you're there anyway, they're pretty inexpensive compared to some of the other fare available. So good too. The bangers and mash are also excellent.

Hearing lots of good things about the Ramshackle Cafe. Someone just told me they have the best hot wings also. I've got to stop there, I guess.

I love Ramshackle Cafe. Not the place to go for a quiet, romantic meal...but if you want a fun place with great food, you definitely should go.

Within the Villages these are the best in order . . .

1. Bonefish
2. Athens
3. Lighthouse

All have malt vinegar . . .

Ramshackle Cafe is marginal for fish and chips and not worth the ride compared to the three I've mentioned within the Villages . . . off the Villages the best maybe in the New England style restaurant in Celebration, Fl . . . called the Town Tavern.

ps . . . The Cafe D'Antonio in Celebration has very good Italian food compared to what we can get in the Villages.

I'd love to have a good fish n' chips with either haddock or cod so until goongoozler came with the posting, I was planning to visit Ramshackle. Now I am not sure. I like them both at Bonefish and Lighthouse though I had better. So, perhaps I like to let RichieLion try since he is aware of Banger and Mash. RichieLion, where might I also get a pint of Bitter or Guiness with the latter with that smooth silkiness and form? But please not at Epcot center. I'll go broke.:duck::duck:

If you don't mind traveling a bit, there's a pub in Altamonte Springs that has excellent fish & chips, along with bangers and mash, steak and kidney pie, and the standard english pub fare. You follow Rt 441/27 and bear left where they separate. then it's 441 until it changes to, if I remember correctly, Rt 436. It's the same way you get to Costco. It's called St. Andrew's Pub. Being from a major New England fishing port, we are kind of finicky about our seafood, and we really don't get the attraction to The Lighthouse. While it's ok, we've never had anything there that we said "wow" about. But then again, that's just my opinion, and we know what they say about opinions. Another seafood place we found on TOTV was Fisherman's Cove on Rt 44 in Inverness. While the fish & chips weren't anything special (fish pieces were too small), the rest of the meals were wonderful. Great coleslaw, deep fried huge shrimp, and tender, sweet and moist sea scallops the size of hockey pucks. But then again, everybody's taste is different.

I love the Ocala Alehouse for fish and chips. I'm not a fish eater but I will eat it there. :thumbup:

Try Fish Pro in Groveland. Great Catfish!

Can't help you with the Guinness as I've never been a fan. I like darker beers, but I never have developed a taste for Guinness. Bass Ale is about as bitter as I'll go.

But LaryB's suggestion of St. Andrew's Pub sounds like the place with all their British fare to be the place to get a correctly poured pint of Guinness.

I'm also interested in the good pint of ale or bitters. Since Augustine's closed there has not been much to pick when it comes to good beers. Red Souce and Urban Flats (what ever it is now) have Newcastle on draft and that's about it in the Villages. Some places have Guiness in the bottle (it's from Canada) but try to find a Bass, Fuller's ESB, John Courage, Samuel Smith's, Tetley's bitters, Theakston's Old Peculier, Youngs, Greene King, or Whitbread on draft. Sam Adams' seasonal Octoberfest and Winter Lager are passable but not in the great category. I'd Love to see a brew house open like British Beer Co, John Harvard's Brew House, the Public House Brewery, etc. here in the Villages . . . I'm sure they'd get the business!

Sounds like St. Andrews Pub is the place to go. I still miss Fish n' Chips wrapped in newspapers with real homemade "English" fries and a little vinegar to go with it. A few years ago there was an English pub ran by an Englishman in Stuart, Florida by the river and under a passway. Wonder if it is still there. How long of a drive is it to Stuart?:thumbup:

You're right about the haddock, but french fries? Chips is suppose to be chunks of potatoes. I was introduced to fish and chips in Scotland in the early 60's where the Navy said I should live for a year and half. The fish was I believe haddock or cod in several big chunks as well as the potatoes. It was wrapped in newspaper and handed to you. Malt vinegar is a must. They also served some kind of white colored sausage.

In this area you will never find a place which serves fish and chips like they do at Ye Old Fish & Chip in Woonsocket. Believe me....... The warm water fish they serve down here can't compare to cold water fish. The best fish for fish and chips is served in England and is called plaice. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Wish we could get it outside of Jolly Old England.

Cliff. Was I eating plaice instead of cod when I was in England? How would one know from another? After reading these posts, I got a hankering for shepard's pie so went to a local Irish pub and had it with a pint of Guiness. Can't get that silkiness here but got to do the best with what you got.

If your fish was exceptionally good, you were probably eating plaice. It is a cold water flatfish. Do a Google for a much better description. There are different types of plaice too.

Pat, A friend of mine would bring us fish @ chips from Woonsocket, and the thing that stood out to us was the slice of potato fried within the fish. Is this the same place? If you are from the town next to Woonsocket, wouldn't you say that "they're side by each"?

The potato coated fish is to die for . . . the best anywhere!!! I do at least one trip to Woonsocket and Ye Old English Fish and Chip each year!

I have been to a few places this side of the Atlantic that can replicate bangers and mash but not fish and chips. In the UK and Ireland their fish is usually fresh and therein lies the difference. I know of a place near St. Augustine that does a decent job and they also have mushy peas and they have ESP bitter.

Hello - I am originally from Providence and lived in RI my whole life until we arrived in TV in January.

Stadium fish & Chips in Cranston RI was the best south of Woonsocket.

I agree fish & chips needs to be haddock.
Went to Athens tonight for the first time. Mrs. Bosox & I had the fish & chips and were very impressed.Talked to the owner & the fish is delivered twice a week by truck from Boston! Try it I think you'll like it!!

If my wife and I want fish and chips, we head straight to The Lighthouse and we never walk away disappointed.

I too will second Athens-when we were down in Oct we made sure to try it out. The haddock is excellent just like the fish from New York where they get it from. We were not disappointed at all. I believe it be hard to beat!!

That sounds great but too bad their haddock is frozen from china. with the cost of fresh haddock being so high it's not affordable too bring in fresh from Boston.
