Road being built on Wildlife Preserve

A local organization has taken over a wildlife preserve that borders my back yard. CAN THEY DO THAT? How do I find out who bought this land? It's making me sick to see what they are doing.

bike42 12-07-2011 07:19 PM

Where are you located?

SgtJohn 12-07-2011 08:34 PM

What are they doing ?

villages07 12-07-2011 08:47 PM

If you are in Sumter County, you can go to the property appraiser site, search for your address; navigate to the GIS map of your neighborhood and click on adjoining parcels to see who owns them, when bought, etc.

http://www.sumterpa.com/GIS/Search_F.asp

graciegirl 12-07-2011 10:09 PM

Mariluu. Please return and tell us where you are located and what they are doing and who "they" are.

Boudicca 12-08-2011 09:36 AM

Road?

Yes, please post again as I was told the "set aside, wildlife area" land is sacrosant.....

Hmmmmm..... Seems like a large percentage of "first time posters" come on here and post a negative or controversial post and then never return.

Not sure that they expect of this forum ????

Just saying . . .

mariluu65 12-08-2011 02:53 PM

I am in the village of Santiago, in The Villages

angiefox10 12-08-2011 03:15 PM

What forest preserve?

I don't see a forest preserve in that area. The Owl Preserve, but that is on the other side of the golf course.

mariluu65 12-08-2011 03:24 PM

Thanks

I looked it up and it is owned by The Villages of Lake Sumter. Under "Use Desc.", it says ACREAGE NOT CLASSED AS AG (09900)

Do you know what that means?

pooh 12-08-2011 03:51 PM

Hi Mariluu,

Exactly what is this group doing to the land? Is it being surveyed? Are trees being removed?

If the land hasn't been designated a preserve, and by the description you found, it doesn't seem to be, then with proper authorization, I'm sure the land can be used in many ways. Sorry about that.

janmcn 12-08-2011 04:00 PM

It's beginning to sound like all those people that bought homes bordering the "owl perserve" back in 1999 and 2000 got duped, if what MaryLu says is true. There are no trees on this land, and it is nowhere near the golf course. Buyer Beware.

rubicon 12-08-2011 04:08 PM

I suggest the OP begin making some phone calls to the county planning commission to find out what is going on. It is public record after all and residents have a right to know.

A road implies vehicles and vehicles imply activity. What type of activity?

villages07 12-08-2011 04:09 PM

Mariluu...not sure what that designation means. Can you provide some more specifics on the location? Bordering streets in The Villages?

It looks like there is a section of Santiago that borders the northern boundary of the private property off of 466 between BV and Morse where the Morse family and other connected folks live. Otherwise, I and others are just guessing about your question.

You might also try calling Janet Tutt's office... They might be able to give you an answer although their domain is CDD owned land.

Where is there an owl preserve in the village of Santiago?

Bogie, You're right. The owl preserve is not in the Village of Santiage. It's just the only preserve I could find close to that village. I don't think what the OP is looking at is a preserve.

I agree, try and pin point the location (village, streets, etc.) and we might be able to help.

Hey Bill here it comes..................

On TV map it's called the Harold S Schwartz Wildlife Preserve, but locals have called it the owl preserve forever. It's south of Azteca Loop and Caribe Drive, east of BVB, west of Arredondo, north of Carvello and Panchos Way.

Bogie Shooter 12-08-2011 05:19 PM

I sent an email to Janet Tutt, District Manager regarding construction in the Village of Santiago. Here is her reply....

Good Evening,

I really appreciate your helping us to address rumors.

There is plan (subject to District 1 finalizing in the morning) to move forward with a one way path across District property (adjacent to wetland area) to the De La Vista postal facility to allow carts to access it without going out on to Morse.

Other than that, there are no other activities taking place.

Let me know if you need anything further.

Janet

SgtJohn 12-08-2011 05:21 PM

So, That's it. A cart path. Alrighty then.

graciegirl 12-08-2011 05:23 PM

I kinda think I would like to vote for Bogie Shooter for president.

SgtJohn 12-08-2011 05:25 PM

Sounds good. I'll 2nd the emotion.

Nope the activity Janet talked about is no where near the Village of Santiago.
The mystery deepens..........I need some of that popcorn.

Path

This was mentioned at last weeks CIC meeting. They were exploring a way to get cart traffic to the postal station because there were complaints from residents about driving across Moorse Blvd. Much of the property isv marsh land but they are trying to add the path.

Good point, I will follow up.

duffysmom 12-08-2011 05:55 PM

As I drive north on Morse Blvd, I've noticed what appears to be a road through marsh land north of the postal facility. It appears to be wet land and it concerned me, now I know what is going on. I feel sorry for the homes that backed up to marsh. Over the year's I've learned that there is no such thing as protected land, especially in Forida.

Bill-n-Brillo 12-08-2011 05:57 PM

Bogie Shooter for President of TV - can I be one of your cabinet members?

:jester:

Bill :)

I am reminded of the old adage "another good story spoiled by an eyewitness". Thanks for the clarification, Bogie Shooter.

BTW, hats off to Janet Tutt too. I think she is doing a great job.

They are clearing away all the underbrush. Everything except the trees. Now the animals I have always seen will not be there.

They are riding ATV's, golf carts, and small vehicles to carry trash cans , etc. on this dirt road they are making. They are also riding horses on it.

Can you just tell what street you live on? I know you don't want to give away your location. I am sure you are upset. You aren't alone. Someone will help you with the answers.
