Pack of coyotes

We just left TV this week but heard that a pack of
coyotes have been spotted on a golf course.
A friend told me her little Maltese was taken by
a coyote from her backyard which backs to a
golf course. She was in tears telling me this
story. Apparently, the coyote was very fast
and took the little dog even though she was
standing just a few feet away.

Please watch your little animals.

jblum315 01-07-2012 04:28 AM

Coyotes are not a protected species. These animals should be trapped and removed.

Please tell us what village and/or what golf course.

This is very troubling indeed. I am very sad for your friend.

Very sorry to hear this about the loss of the dog.

Hard time believing this one.

Why would you have a hard time believing this one? While I don't know if it's true or not. What I do know is that coyotes run in packs, they do eat dogs and they have been spotted in The Villages.

Nothing like calling someone a liar that you probably don't even know to get in on a conversation of something that dog owners are very much concerned with.

red tail 01-07-2012 09:20 AM

wild coyote packs in your yard is about as likely as winning the powerball !

Sympathy - please try it

It is in most dictionaries. 1a : an affinity, association, or relationship between persons or things wherein whatever affects one similarly affects the other b : mutual or parallel susceptibility or a condition brought about by it c : unity or harmony in action or effect <every part is in complete sympathy with the scheme as a whole —

Calling them a liar is not a standard meaning of the word:cus:

I an deeply sorry that they lost a valued member of their family. This loss is tragic.

Oren L Miller 01-07-2012 09:22 AM

some people do win the powerball

There are hundreds of powerball winners. It only takes one.

Well there is a few up here in Chatham. We live on flintlock terrace our backyard is a horse ranch. At night you can hear them yippy allover so yes there are here just not "in the villages" Now as far as taking a small dog in front of the owner that's a stretch for me as when you hear them at night if you even go to the fences edge they quite down really quick. Just FYI for the group...

paulandjean 01-07-2012 11:13 AM

I am not calling anyone a liar. When did this happen? Where did this happen?Who did this happen to?A person said a friend of mine, and then disappears with any other facts. Hey people "Lighten Up ". Just because somebody says something on here its not fact. Maybe the person is real. real old and has the facts wrong.

westcoastsunshine 01-07-2012 12:48 PM

Coyotes

I was hoping to make people with small dogs or cats
aware of a potential danger. However, I will try
to get some additional information for you. I also
have two small white dogs so she wanted to warn
me but I was leaving the next day.

Do not underestimate coyotes as we live in downtown
Vancouver and just recently government signs have been posted
up saying:

Leash your dog, coyotes spotted in area.

Yes....downtown Vancouver with lots of people,
houses, apartments, stores, etc.

I suppose people who do not have family pets could
care less but the rest of us do care and will listen up.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of this little dog. You are right that telling a story on TOTV doesn't make it fact. But that doesn't mean it's fiction. Or that the person is real, real old.

Coyotes normally avoid humans, but these days they're getting more used to crowded conditions and to people. Coyotes can be especially dangerous when in packs, or if they have babies nearby.

Why not express sympathy and keep an open mind.

I agree Bare. When an animal gets hungry, it will do what it has to for food.

Regardless, I think it's a good idea to leash your small dogs. Especially between dusk and twilight!

laryb 01-07-2012 03:14 PM

Friends who were over the other evening told us that when they left that they saw a coyote cross Buttonwood Run near Fishhawk Rec. Center. Pretty sure they were telling the truth.

westcoastsunshine 01-07-2012 03:14 PM

coyotes

Okay, this is the area where the little dog was taken which
apparently backs to a golf course:

East of Nancy Lopez...west of Taverna Red on 441 south
of 42.

I hope this helps those who do care about their pets.
Better to be safe than sorry!!

another Linda 01-07-2012 03:14 PM

I am in the process of looking for the pictures I took of a coyote eating our neighbor's cat in our back yard here in Syracuse. We live in the city. If it happened here I don't know why it would be unlikely to happen in TV. (Of course once I find the pictures I need to learn how to post them. But then maybe that would be just too much!) :ohdear:

The Village Girl 01-07-2012 03:39 PM

Nope... It really wouldn't make any difference if you found a picture of a pack of coyotes eating THAT dog, there are still people on here that would argue with you!

Some people just aren't happy unless they are stirring stuff up! (wow... I really cleaned that one up! Would have been censored anyway.)

Just exactly WHAT village are you in???:laugh::laugh:

Yes, Angie, I agree. Good idea to leash small dogs, better safe than sorry.

We back on a golf course, and a hilly area with bushes. During the day I supervise my dogs when they're in the back yard, even though one of them weighs 70 lbs. At night I take my dogs out in the front yard, not the back. Who know what lurks in the bushes.

duffysmom 01-07-2012 05:24 PM

Thanks WestCoast, I have no doubt that this happened here in TV. My little maltese was stalked by a coyote while on his leash in Upstate NY. I could see the coyote in the bushes beside me; I quickly picked Duffy up and ran inside. At that time a pack of coyotes were passing through the area and we could hear them howling at night. Never underestimate a wiley coyote.

Mickedamouse24 01-07-2012 06:11 PM

Doubters of Possible Coyote sightings!

I assume you realize with all the building going on South of 466A a great deal of habitat for these particular critters and others has been destroyed. Hence, they are starting to move North of 466A. Don't assume for a second that these critters are not in and around your neighborhoods...It would astound you what roams the streets at night..!!!

hedoman 01-07-2012 06:24 PM

We hear them at night on Glenvieww CC in the eagle preserve along with many other wierd animal sounds. The dogs across the way are always barking at night too as they must see or sense something..................

Jhooman 01-07-2012 06:35 PM

Coyotes do exist and do run in packs. In Southern California, our local golf course was taken over by coyotes, they were feeding on the feral cats. They had to be trapped and removed. They had become very aggressive, even in our town home area, the coyotes were jumping the fences to get small dogs and cats. We never left our Yorkies alone in the gated backyard, coyotes are fast, the dogs would never have a chance.

Since moving here, The Villages is alive with abundant creatures, including coyotes. We will not leave our dogs even on the lanai, coyotes will break through the screen to get their treat, my beloved Yorkies.

Be careful out there, we are the stewards of our pets.

hedoman 01-07-2012 06:36 PM

We stay in the birdcage at night as the local animals own the night we have the day......

We had them, also in my section of Southern CA....and in addition to feral cats, domestic kitty was on the menu. There would be coyotes walking through the neighborhood in daylight, most unusual, and the walking path beside my house was one of their hikes to wherever the heck they were going. Friends lost their doxie to a coyote that jumped the fence around their yard and took the dog. The friends were in the yard at the time.

My heart is heavy for those who have lost their beloved pet. Coyotes are around, I have absolutely not doubt...neighbors tell us of sightings around the community. Please, watch your pets. Coyotes are losing their habitat and food sources to humanity and they are only doing what comes instinctively...we are the ones who must take precautions.

It would be so helpful to know in what general area this awful event happened. Was it north or south of 466? On the east or west side? Near Buena Vista or Morse? We don't know your friend, so we don't know where exactly this happened. I am sure that coyote's are everywhere in The Villages, but we would just like to know WHERE this happened, please.

Why? Why do you have to know where it happened? Either you believe her or you don’t, but if you are “sure that Coyote's are everywhere in The Villages”, then “where” it happened is a moot point.

The OP didn’t say that a pack of Coyotes went into someone’s yard. The OP said that she heard about a pack of coyotes crossing a golf course. That’s hard to believe? ...really? Whether you have seen them or not, we DO have Coyotes here, they sometimes do travel/hunt in packs (anything more than 2 is considered a pack), and there are numerous threads about Coyotes and their tracks being spotted on golf courses. So what’s not to believe?

The OP also said that a friend’s dog had been taken by a “fast moving” Coyote while she stood only a few feet away, in her backyard, which borders a golf course. Also not hard to believe. Google “coyote attacks” if you don’t believe this scenario.

You can choose whether or not you want to believe what the OP said. Fair enough. But to combine the two statements into one is either a reading comprehension problem or a deliberate attempt to unfairly to disparage the poster.

Animals in the Villages

If we could realize that we really live in a "rural" area, and that we are displacing the natural habitat by our "city" of The Villages, then maybe we could agree to leave things alone. Get rid of all coyotes, hawks, snakes, etc., and we'll all be left with rats and vermine to talk about. Nature has a way of balancing things out if "man" will just leave things alone. Okay, now beat me up !

I think the message from the author of this thread is important. We must be cautious around areas that could house coyotes or gators or other hungry critters. Especially those of us with little animals.
