drinking water/bottled or TV?
 

Do most people Buy Bottled Water or is The Villages water in your home okay to drink?

we use the door dispensed water in our fridge - has a filter that has to be changed every so often. We use tap water to brush our teeth, though, and tap water for cooking.

I tried using the filtered fridge water for coffee, but didn't taste much difference so quit doing it because it took much longer to fill the pot, but perhaps I should just keep a pitcher of it in the fridge to use for coffee and cooking.

then I would use filtering system. We use the PUR filter for now, as it is very effective and can be purchased at Publix. I avoid bottled water, because of all the changes that can occur with temperature and plastic, and I avoid city water because of the process of purification and the contaminates in the water source. A filter eliminates 99% of the major contaminates and the residual we are getting in other sources, especially when eating out. After we get the major landscaping finished this trip, I intend to install a whole house filter and that will pay for itself. There is a another thread on this subject and someone mentioned a good one from HD that I think is worth checking out. I not a resident, just a wannabee, but on my 3 visits to TV since 2010, I drank water from the tap, and I didn't detect a bad taste at any time. Just my 2 cents.

Our water tasted so bad I could barely drink it. We have a water filter in our water softener and now it tests great.

We had a filtration system installed. Somehow, the water wasn't to our liking, and bottled water gets to be an expense, and a hassle to store. Guess it's a matter of personal taste.

Water Softener. Got rid of the chlorine taste and reduces my laundry supplies.

The taste of the tap water doesn't taste good to me, so I run it though a Brita filter. That seems to take out the "nasty" and make it taste palatable. I also cook with the Brita water. That's probably not required, but I still do it. In the long run, the Brita is cheaper than bottled water, too.

We have a water softener/filter and another carbon type filter on the refrigerator water dispenser. Our water tastes fine....

Carbon only removes chlorine does not remove bad cutties. Also take a refrigerator filter after a month of use, Drain out the water have it tested. Read the resultsl NOT GOOD GASP!

Now the good news your body absorbs all that crap stores it in your liver and kidneys and you feel just fine. You get used to it. We do have some internal defense.

Dr, Oz and others medical shows have made statements to the fact that we have reached a state of near crisis in this country with fresh drinking water. Eveyone should have reverse osmosis drinking water and their food rinsed in it also.

Also if you study and read hard and deep enough you will discover that Chlorine is a major cause of Asthma. Your body ( Skin ) and lungs absorb more levels of chlorine in a hot shower than necessary for good health.

In fact some publibications state a person should crack a window when showering with a city water supply.In addition Chlorine does not kill some new strains of bacteria. Only reverse osmosis and or uv light kill the critters.

A softner alone does not work. Bottle drinking does work but thats another story. Some of it has salt and other bad stuff.

And no I do not sell water systems did not want to buy one but feel safe knowing I have done the best I could to protect the plumbing in my home the appliances our health and them grandbabies when they visit. A side benefit is I no longer have to buy bottled water and recycle plastic and there are no water spots. Soap is saved etc.

Safe water is a personal decision backed with research and equipment demonstration. Which beats gossip and rumor all day long.

I use fridge filter for drinking water. For coffee and all other stuff I use the tap ....been drinking it for years....the water seems fine to me. :shrug:

We just moved from a small Caribbean island with horrible water--the island's pipes were 70+ years old and while the locals drank the water, expats (including us) stuck with bottled water. We would use the city water for bathing and cooking, but bottled water for washing produce, drinking, and brushing our teeth.

Since moving to TV I am fine with the tap water (it is much better than where we just came from), but my wife prefers filtered water. I think it is all a matter of personal taste and what you are accustomed to.

We've been drinking either bottled water or tap water for the past five seasons, and I think it is time to look at a filter system for the whole house. For those of you who have a "whole home" filter, did you shop around? Who did you deal with. Did you install it yourself? I don't want a system where I have to order massive bottles of water .. I want a system that purifies all the house water. Please .. any guidance?

We just installed the PUR filter under the kitchen sink - perfect water and reasonable.

I'm sure "most" of what you say is true,....I also don't have time to sit around and listen to what Dr. Oz has to say about everything. I'm sure the guy's mostly legit..

I get tired of hearing about some food or other crisis every time I turn around....for crying out loud our parents drank water out of pipes that had lead in them their whole life, my dad's 93, he seems to be doing OK,....but then all I can remember him doing is eating and drinking what was set before him on the table and saying a prayer, asking God to bless his food. I know, ...that's not intelligent enough for some.

Who has time to keep up with all this knowledge, most of which is scientific opinion, NOT FACT?... How much of it can be proven to be correct? My guess is that a lot of it is BS. We're getting too smart for our own good.

This is a forum for opinion,....that's my two cents on safe or unsafe drinking water,.....and organic foods. Now I'll go hide somewhere because I'm sure I'm about to get torched. :icon_wink:

Did you buy the PUR filter and install it yourself. If so, where? And the cost?

I've also heard that Kinetco and TAS Environmental offer solutions but I haven't priced them out yet.

Husband corrected me - we got a GE kitchen & bath filtration system ($60) at Home Depot (couple of weeks ago). We had a plumber install that and a new kitchen faucet for under $150. Very pleased with the filtration system so far, no issues.

Mike and I drink the filtered water from the fridge. The tap water is used for showering, teeth brushing, cooking, though when I make rice, I use filtered water.

We have a water softener...had one in CA (very hard water in our area) so got used to having them. We do not use a sodium salt in the softner, use a potassium salt.

Water is my beverage of choice and I'm particular about how it tastes. The water from the fridge, through the filter tastes good to me. The stuff from the faucet, not a flavor I like.

We all came from other places with different water supplies....and the water tasted different. We got used to it where we lived or we bought bottled water, got a filter or a reverse osmosis system.

When we were first married and living in northern MA, the water there tasted absolutely horrible...more like the river it came from, mud and all. That taste I NEVER got use to... ;)

Sears TODAY
 

We just had Sears come out today and install a combination filter and softner system. It reduces the chlorine smell and taste and filters the water and softens it at the same time. Kelly was the installer and the whole thing installed was only around $1,000. Too soon to call but I think with all of the reviews I have read that this is the way to go for TV. :thumbup:

Service considerations
 

Did you get the extended warranty? We just paid it up front. Life time 24 / 7 service. Full replacement. And our system can be serviced.

Most systems will wear out and the internal media needs replacing. When you do the math on certain systems they become throw away not servicable.

Nothing wrong with that as long as your aware of it. The carbon does deplete and has to be swapped out every 3-5 years depending on use.

Now if you have no carbon filter the chlorine will destroy the media inside the softener that softens the water.

Your system is better than nothing. Your drinking water still must be filtered. I spent 7 days with my son on a fast attack sub cruise. No bottled or britta or pure or sears it was all reverse osmosis for drinking.

And I learned how to take quick cold showers! LOL

The water in Tamarind Grove is just fine. It might taste better than where you came from or it might taste worse. In my case, it’s pretty much a wash! I keep bottled water in the refrigerator because I like to drink cold water when I’m in the mood for really cold water, or else to carry with me in the cart/car. I use tap water for coffee and cooking. I don’t worry about drinking from plastic water bottles and I don’t worry about drinking from the tap. Honestly, the water in The Villages is the least thing that you have to worry about, as far as making you sick or killing you. JMOP

If you want a system to filter the drinking water and to soften the water, are those two separate systems? If it is going throughout the house, is this something that should be done as you build or is this something that is better done later?

Our water was on the hard side and had a chlorine smell. I don't know if it tasted bad, because of the smell, I didn't drink it! We put in the Sears system... the water is softer and taste great! I'm a satisfied customer and this for less then $1000!

No... I didn't buy the warranty. I don't buy warranties. At this point, if something happens to any of my appliances, I'm ahead of the game!

Point well taken don't agree with you on this one but still well taken. I have no endocrine disruptors in our water and you are happy with soft epa legal endocrine disruptors.

Remember when we were in the design team home and I wanted to refill a empty bottle with tap water. My rep she yells! Nooooooooooo don't drink that.
At the same time Ruthie comes out of the bath room saying " It's smells in there and and it's not me!" I knew then and there stock was not going to work.

Now off to my time out room. My Bad! :1rotfl:

Well, the action was fast and furious for a bit but seems to have died!
We move into our new CYV on the 29th of this month and we already know that we MUST have a softener. I doubt that the Saint James water is any different than the water in the other areas. We have really good water here on Emerald Mountain, but we still use a PUR faucet filter for any cooking or drinking. We anticipate using the same thing at TV, even with a softener. TV has some of the hardest water that we have ever encountered. See you folks at the end of the month! :wave:

I am a tea drinker. I use a glass kettle. I never had a problem with the taste of TV water, so I used tap water in my kettle. Well, after a short time, i noticed a white substance inside the kettle. In the bottom and on the spout. It was a hard white substance, I tried everything to clean the kettle. Vinegar, baking soda....nothing worked. My neighbor had the same problem. I got a new kettle and use a Brita filter. No more problem.I don't know what the white substance is, but I don't want to ingest it either.

Great idea; I'll dip my coffee carafe in the pool for that clean taste and it will fill faster than the tap.

Hey I also have some air for sale that is much better than the air in The Villages. Why breathe that old stale air when you can have it bottled and fresh.

No need to recycle either because the plastic will break down in days; trust me.

We don't have a water conditioner.

just think of water as being on vacation every place you stop the water taste is different. The water in TV is different than home, so vacation it is

I also bought the Sears Hybrid and have been very pleased so far. I had the plumbing company (Mike Scott) that plumbed my house install the system so there wouldn't be a who's fault issue if a problem arose.. For the same price Sears asked they ran it to an offset in the garage so I didn't need to squeeze around it all the time.

I also bought the extended warranty which is not my custom, but I thought I would see how this held up the first year.

My water checks out great and I would definitely check it out instead of the $ 3000 or $4000 home sales guys.

I use a Pur filter that you attach to your faucet and it works just fine. I change the filter about every four months.

Is there a difference in the PUR filters for the faucet and the pitchers and the filter on the water disp in the refrigerator? We just use the water from the refrigerator for drinking.

my tap water tastes fine but after it sits on my night table all night it tastes of chemicals. so i use it for boiling in kettle but fill gallons at publix in colony for 30 cents each for ordinary drinking...tests consistently show our water is fine as far as health goes.
